Rake Review

Rake is finally over. The final season started off slow and weak. However, it picked up quick and ended in a good way. The writing was clever and managed to let Cleaver go out on a high note. The ending felt a little rushed, but I was ultimately very satisfied with it. It was pretty funny and the finale kept me entertained from start to finish. It managed to wrap up pretty much all of the storylines. I am sad to see it end. The finale scores an 8 out of 10. Previous recaps of Rake are available on Reel Mockery!

Does this mean that Cleaver and Nicole end up together? Uuuugggg . . .

  2. Thomas Peacock says:

    Great bloody show.
    Stem to stern.
    Loved it.

    • Annette says:

Nicole told Cleaver that the blue stuff was Bluebottle which is a Portuguese Man of War
I want to know why the series ended like it did. Were they intending to make it the season cliff hanger, but then just ended the series there??
Hoping maybe they’ll make a movie

      • ReelMockery says:

Thanks for clarifying. To my understanding, they intended to end the show after that season. They might’ve hoped that it would be picked up and ended it on a cliffhanger but I believe they knew it was going to end.

A movie would a great idea. Excellent show that I could easily watch over and over again.

  3. Patrick says:

I was fine with the shift of Cleaver’s ‘noticing’ Nicole in a romantic manner. Fit with the theme which was repeated throughout series of his ‘missing what was right in front of him’ with Wendy. Nicole was there for him, year after year, never ‘noticed’ romantically.

Can someone PLEASE explain to me what the ‘attack’ of blue stuff on Cleaver was when he went into the water?? Only thing I could think of was a jelly fish. But it looked like blue plastic. Was is meant to be the tarp that had covered the Parliament building 2 years before? Somehow, after blowing up the building, it was dumped into the sea?

A fun series. For me, the 5th and final season shifted in tone to a more zany, fast paced, style. I missed the earlier seasons inclusion of some drama through the premise of courtroom scenes with criminal cases.

    • ReelMockery says:

Good points. I never really thought about the blue thing on his hand but you could be right. That would make a lot of sense and would be a little quirky twist to the conclusion. I really miss the show. One of the funniest series I have watched and one of the few I watched from start to finish.

  4. Brian Talbot says:

I only found the Rake series a few days ago and have now watches it every evening until I am on the last series. I love it and an disappointed that there are only 5 series ! My daughter is a solicitor and so is her husband, I don’t think they carry on like Cleaver and Co !

  5. Alan says:

    Just watched the last episode.
I thought the blue things on Cleaver’s face at the end were meant to be Blue-ringed octopuses; extremely toxic. Could not be anything to do with the Parliament tent, that’s hundreds of miles from the coast.

Typical for a Cleaver case that the murderers (of the plumbers) get off scot free.

  6. Teri Draper says:

Why did this series end? I absolutely LOVED this series and I’m a YANK!
    What happened?
It looked like they didn’t plan the ending.
    Explanation???

    • ReelMockery says:

It ended at least a year ago in Aussie. I really never followed the story behind the show but I think they knew it was going to end. Just maybe not a fantastic ending for the series? Easy to overlook since the show was so spectacular though.

  7. Scourge says:

Bluebottle is just like a jellyfish. They can be deadly, but not usually.

I think it was more just about how random things happen to Cleaver!

GREAT series by the way. I’m quarantining with my father right now..and he doesn’t usually love comedies(or at least it takes a really good one). He LOVED this show. Watched the series in about 5 days.

  8. Babs says:

Loved the series but the last season was not well thought through. Why the blue things that attack him – what does that have to do with anything? Great series with weak ending.

  9. Jennifer Ellis says:

I don’t remember the season, but can someone explain the episode with Cleaver defending the priest. At the end I missed what was revealed.

  10. Emilie Piollot says:

S3E5 “Cleaver is asked to defend an old friend, Father Bobby (Paul Sonkila), who will appear at the Royal Commission into institutional child sex abuse under the allegation of having covered up abuses by some of his fellow priests; ” Is that the one?

As for the series, wished the show had stayed in the courtroom instead of veering into slapstick. Love the character but the plot went off the rails early on and it took a while for me to get through it to the final scene, a bizarre ending that I thought was supposed to be a dream. Not sure how it was to supposed to fit. Wish he’d ended up with Wendy but on the other hand he ended up with the one character who might have had even a worse sense of morality than he did.

    • ReelMockery says:

Hey there and thanks for stopping by. I can’t argue with you there. The last season was an odd journey compared to Cleaver’s courtroom battles. It really betrayed what made the season great in the first place. It has been a while now, but I remember the last season having some great moments although it never captured the magic of prior seasons.

  11. Gregory N Parker says:

The first four seasons of Rake were top notch, but imho the last season didn’t work at all. The reason is that Cleaver was a lovable loser, but he carried about defending his clients. He always pulled off the necessary sincerity on their behalf despite his un preparedness, selfishness, being hung over etc. As a Senator he didn’t give a shit and it showed. When he did something it was strictly out of spite with no pride in his job. Season 5 turned out to be a gigantic disappointment with throwing every stupid situation against the kitchen wall to see if any of them were funny. I personally think they all slid down the wall into the sink.

    • ReelMockery says:

Can’t argue with that. It was certainly a weird season and didn’t mesh well with the previous four seasons. Not nearly as good, but Rake is better than no Rake. lol

  12. Deb Hawkins says:

My husband and I loved this series, wish it hadn’t ended…WE WANT MORE!!!
