Wolf Like Me Series 2 Episode 4 Recap

The episode opens with Gary (Josh Gad) visiting the new homeowners, Lizanne (Eliza Logan) and Willem (Felix Williamson), to beg for the basement door. The new “swinging” owners immediately make it clear they aren’t interested in parting with the door, claiming it ties together the most popular room of their new home. Pulling out his checkbook, Gary claims money won’t be a problem. That changes when Willem asks for $25,000. Willem does offer to cut him a deal if he’ll act as a submissive for their next party. Gary confirms the $25,000 and asks who to make the check out to.

Back at home, Gary finds Mary Hammond (Isla Fisher) enthralled in a research project. She tells Gary that she’s found an abandoned mine shaft near Oodnadatta in the outback that will make an excellent spot for the next full moon. Gary appears to grow troubled with the idea when she reveals that it has been abandoned for 100 years and is possibly full of Mercury. The conversation is soon interrupted by the warning beeps of a delivery truck backing up outside. He suggests they go see what the noise is all about. Outside, the delivery guy (Ron Smyck) announces that he’s there to install the “f*ck door.” Back inside admiring the installation, Gary apologizes for not letting Mary deal with the basement from the beginning. He says he wants to show her how committed he is and proposes, although he doesn’t have a ring. She accepts his offer but makes him promise they’ll wait until after the baby.

As Marvin Gaye’s “How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You” plays in the background, time flashes by in a series of scenes. Mary and Gary are shown cleaning out the basement while Emma (Ariel Donoghue) and Abigail (Audrey Nitschke) bond over a school shop project. Gary and Emma spend an afternoon making dinner and Mary starts participating willingly in her birthing classes. When time slows back down, a calendar reveals it’s the day of the full moon. Gary, Mary, and Emma are on their way to visit Sarah (Emma Lung) and Ray (Anthony Taufa). During the ride, Gary offers to tell Sarah that Mary isn’t feeling well. Mary confirms she’s fine with the visit, but grows concerned when she suspects a taxi has been following them. Gary accuses her of being paranoid, but she feels the need to blow through the next red light, leaving the potential follower stuck in traffic.

Things get even more stressful when they arrive at Sarah’s to find the street lined with vehicles. Emma admits that the guests were her idea but promises that it’s not a bad thing. In the front yard, Mary is embraced by Darren (Wil Ridley) while Gary meets Albert (Chris Bunton). After learning that Suppakorn (Kenneth Moraleeda) teaches Maui Thai and works as a nutritionist, Gary promises him a new customer. As everyone shuffles away, Emma pulls Mary to the side and promises the baby shower won’t take more than 2 hours.

While Ray mans the grill, Gary thanks him for watching Emma. Ray says it’s no problem but asks Gary to be more attentive to his phone in the event of a repeat of Emma’s panic attack. He apologizes and promises that he will. Ray also mentions Olivia’s (Honour Latukefu) constant mentioning of their new basement. Gary continues to allege their home doesn’t have a basement. While Mary catches up with Suppakorn, the party receives an unexpected visitor, Anton (Edgar Ramirez).  Mary awkwardly rushes to greet him at the edge of the lawn where their intense discussion draws Gary and then later Sarah’s attention. Gary attempts to force himself into the conversation and isn’t well-received by Anton. He doesn’t even shake his hand and jokes about “Mary and Gary” rhyming. Mary introduces him as her old professor from Chicago is currently on a world tour. This is when Sarah arrives and graciously introduces herself. Anton receives her much better than he did Gary and even receives an invite to the party, although he claims to feel guilty about not having a gift. Sarah tells him that his presence alone is probably enough and ushers him inside. Once alone, Gary tries to prod Mary for answers but she just walks away.

Later at the party, Anton makes an awkward toast in which he claims to have never expected Mary to settle down in a place like Adelaide, let alone have a baby. He says that she was a protégé student and has no doubts that she’ll be an excellent mother as well. Sarah heightens the tension when she suggests a party game. She has the guests anonymously write down their best parenting advice on an index card and drop them into a box. Mary then reads them aloud and becomes flustered when she comes across one that says, “Let your wolf run free.” She tells the guests that it says, “Let your heart run free.” After reading it aloud, everyone notices that Anton has snuck away.

On the return trip to their house, Mary explains to Gary how Anton knows about her being a wolf. She attributes it to him being a good friend who inadvertently found out while trying to console her when she was struggling with David’s death. Gary is obviously suspicious and continues to prod her with awkward and demeaning questions as the evening progresses. Anton eventually shows up at their house, requesting a proper conversation. With the full moon quickly approaching, she tries to table the conversation for another time until he reveals that she bit him the night he came and checked on her. She attempts to apologize, but he claims she did him a favor by releasing him. Ironically enough, he claims that in his old life, he felt trapped like a caged animal, but the wolf makes him feel unburdened. As they continue to converse, Mary appears happy, almost even excited, to have someone to share the experience with. She is, however, troubled that it took him so long to share the news. He claims he’s simply been roaming, “Letting his wolf run free.”  He shocks her and upsets Gary when he asks if she plans on locking away her child and denying it the chance to be a wolf if it does turn out to be part wolf. The onset of the transformation prevents her from answering. Luckily, with the help of Gary, they make it to the basement in the nick of time. He watches them appalled from the door’s peephole where the audience can only hear a rhythmic thumping, subsequent howling, and a look of horror on Gary’s face.

Wolf Like Me Review

Really good episode! I’d give it a 6.5 out of 10. The introduction of Anton was an excellent way to throw some intrigue and struggle into the series. I am just wondering if Anton’s visit was tied to the taxi that Mary thought was following them. I am sure it was, although I am hoping for something else. Maybe Anton’s reckless behavior has brought along troubles or hunters with him. It would be nice to see some other type of adversity, but either way, the arrival of Anton was unexpected but welcomed.
