Witness Number 3 Season 1 Finale Episode 4 Recap

As the finale of Witness Number 3 begins, Jodie (Nina Toussaint-White) runs from the estate to tell Dee (Katherine Field) that she killed him. She is convinced Ivan Barkas (Sion Daniel Young) deactivated the alarm and took her phone before he left. Jodie worries that they will not stop once they’ve found out what happened so she wants to take Kyle (Cole Martin) somewhere safe. Dee calls Detective Whelan (Clare Dunne) to say Jodie is missing. The detective promises to find her. Dee leaves. Detective Whelan goes to Jodie’s apartment only to find that Po (Ruaridh Mollica) is no longer there. A pool of blood and the flashlight remain. PC Barkas tells her no one is here. The door was open when he got here and the panic alarm has been disabled. It was on his route so he stopped by about five minutes ago, but he hasn’t called it in yet.

He found Jodie’s phone. Whelan begins asking questions about Ivan being here last night and when he left. He claims it was about 15 minutes after her since he checked the warranties and left. Ivan did not see anything suspicious. Whelan orders him to call SOCOs and get them down here right now. She’ll contact Richards (Gwynne McElveen) to order a sweep before they begin a house-to-house search. Po wakes up and checks the wound on the side of his head. He checks his messages and hears one of a man warning him not to make him come looking for him. Ivan watches Whelan talk to Dee from a distance. A man taunts Po telling him that they’re going to find him. Dee brings Whelan inside where she tells Jodie that she gets it and will help. She tells Jodie about searching her flat and Ivan finding her phone.

Jodie argues that Ivan gave them the key and stole her phone. Whelan promises they’ll look into it. Jodie is ready to go somewhere safe, but Whelan says she’ll have to get clearance from CPS first. Whelan eventually says there is somewhere she can take her until they get something official sorted. She instructs Jodie to pack an overnight bag and meet her outside. Dee agrees to pick up Kyle and hang onto him until they come pick him up. Later, Jodie talks to her son on the phone to tell him not to worry. She promises to explain everything later and claims nothing happened last night. Kyle just wants to go home and see her. He sits with Cathy (Sue Johnston) at the hospital. Jodie’s battery dies after she tells Kyle that the police will pick him up soon. While Cathy comforts Kyle, Po tries to get in touch with his mother only to be told not to call again.

At Jodie’s flat, Ivan learns that the alarm system is working and sending a signal so the problem must be on the other end. When Whelan stops at a petrol station, Jodie looks through the case file and sees pictures of the dead man. She also finds pictures of the man with his family. Once Whelan returns, she tells Jodie that the man was 39-year-old Nelson Souza. When he was 20, he came over from Portugal. Jodie also learns about his son before Whelan says she is sorry that the trial didn’t work out. Last night was a completely different level because there was a credible threat to life. It is proof that the situation is unmanageable. Whelan explains that the CPS isn’t going to say anything if she decides to back out now, but Jodie isn’t eager to back out. Whelan says they got to her, Kyle, and Cathy despite everything the police put in place to protect her.

She has a chance to walk away. Jodie makes it clear that she isn’t going to give up. Po finally gets picked up by one of his associates. Ivan calls to find out how the alarm got deactivated. He is shocked to learn that someone used his name when giving that order. Detective Whelan takes Jodie to a cabin in the middle of the woods. At the station, Ivan tries to find the address where Whelan was taking Jodie only to learn it is restricted to Whelan and DCI Richards. Whelan tells Jodie that this place will be a safehouse although they only gained possession of it. After Jodie asks if they can send for Kyle now, Whelan says sure. Jodie is told about the bed nearby so she can rest as Whelan promises to make the call. Meanwhile, Po’s associate tells him that he has nothing to worry about if he did everything he could.

Ivan tries to get in touch with Jodie who doesn’t answer her phone. Jodie has a dream about Benji banging on the door and calling her name. Jodie tells him that she needs him to go. She says he has been gone for six weeks and they didn’t know where he was. He apologizes before claiming his phone got stolen. Jodie doesn’t want to do this again. Benji wants to see Kyle and wants help to get back on his feet, but Jodie says this is the end. Jodie wakes up. She goes outside where she sees Whelan using the phone nearby. She comes over to check on Jodie who says she is feeling better. She claims she was talking on the phone about Kyle and he should be there soon. Whelan asks why she is doing all this and if she cares that much about Nelson Souza despite seeing what they’re capable of.

Jodie says Benji was an addict like Nelson. She gave up on Benji, but she isn’t going to do that again. Whelan tells her she should’ve pulled out when she gave her the chance. They hear a car pulling up outside. Ivan gets tired of waiting for Richards and decides to barge in now. As they go outside, Whelan tells Jodie she is sorry. Po gets out with his associate, Sean, who mentions the gash on his boy’s head. He calls her stubborn before admitting she made their life a hassle. When he pulls out a gun, Whelan asks him not to do it here. He yells at her to shut up. Po is told he can make it right as he is handed the gun. Jodie begins pleading with Po not to do this while he tells her to get on her knees. Po is told not to think too much. Just pull the trigger and it’ll be done. Jodie listens as Po pulls the trigger and the other man falls to the ground.

Jodie tells Po it is going to be okay before she takes the gun. She instructs Po to get in the car and drive as far away from here as possible. He does as he is told. Jodie turns her attention to Whelan who promises it was never supposed to end like this. Jodie points the gun at her while Whelan pleads with her not to shoot her. The police arrive at the scene and take Whelan into custody. Ivan sits with Jodie in the back of the ambulance. Moments later, Ivan watches as Whelan is taken to an interview room where she is questioned by Richards. She is asked about a letter regarding the repayment of a 90,000-pound loan. The letter came eight days after she received confirmation that papers were being prepared to take possession of her home. Whelan doesn’t want to say what changed in those eight days.

Then, she is asked about messages received from her mobile phone provider linked to Sean Delkin (Davor Svetic). The messages involve an offer of 90,000 pounds in exchange for planting evidence on a rival drug dealer. She arrested the rival four days later. Her husband’s business was going under and the bank was going to take her house. DCI Richards believes that is why she accepted Delkin’s offer. During the interrogation, Ivan seems to be looking for something. After Delkin was arrested and charged with suspicion of murder, he came to Whelan for assistance. She gave them Jodie’s school address, her business’s address, and her mother’s address. Whelan is accused of enabling their sustained intimidation and disabling the panic alarm. Whelan confesses that she has something for them. Ivan finds the knife.

Jodie tells her mother about Whelan keeping the murder weapon and the police getting everything they needed. She won’t have to testify and they’ll still go down. Cathy wonders what they’ll do to her and why she didn’t just keep it hidden. Jodie suggests she knew it was over for her so it was better to tell the police. She might’ve just felt guilty enough to make herself do anything to feel better. Jodie apologizes for everything she went through although Cathy insists it is alright. She tells her she is proud of her before Kyle asks for more crisps. Next, Jodie meets with Ivan who explains he has been trying to work out what to say to her. He apologizes for what happened between them and reveals he is going to tell his boss.

She agrees he should’ve been taking care of her and it should’ve never happened, but she knew what was going on. She goes on to say she wanted it to happen. Ivan admits they have a boy in custody tied to the shooting so Jodie agrees to come in to ID him. She meets him at the police station to identify the suspect. Although Whelan agrees to make an ID, her testimony is compromised. They’ll need Jodie’s testimony to make a difference. She looks through the pictures and sees Po. Ivan warns her they’ll have to let him go if she doesn’t make an ID. When asked if she sees the shooting, Jodie says no.

Witness Number 3 Review

The finale of Witness Number 3 was pretty straightforward with one or two interesting twists on the way to the finish line. Despite a few odd moments, the acting was solid so the characters felt authentic. The soundtrack was exceptional at times making it possible to feel the tension during those scenes when Jodie is possibly in danger. Nina Toussaint-White and Ruaridh Mollica were great while Sion Daniel Young might’ve been underused.

The series asks some good questions about speaking up and testifying against criminals. I was glad that Ivan wasn’t the one working with the gang although the twist was predictable. Although the ending was pretty much what one would expect, it was a fitting end for everyone involved. Jodie decided to let Po go while Whelan likely went down for being corrupt.

Overall, Witness Number 3 was a decent drama with some legitimately tense moments and some emotional scenes. The finale scores a 6.5 out of 10. Recaps of Witness Number 3 can be found on Reel Mockery here. Learn how to support our work at this link.
