Jodie visits Cathy (Sue Johnston) who is glad the police are taking the threats seriously. She is under lock and key and they know where she is all the time. Cathy is proud of her because it is good to stick together. When the doorbell rings, Jodie instructs Cathy to go upstairs and not to listen in. She sits down with Paul and tells him that she signed the statement. Jodie says people might stand up if she does and she got tired of people telling her what to do. She didn’t call him yesterday because she knew he would try to talk her out of it. Paul (David Crowley) says she couldn’t wait to leave this place before. Jodie wants him to support her. Later, Jodie asks Ivan about her statement being a key part of the case. He admits it is even though they’re still looking for evidence. He hopes they’ll have what they need by the time of the trial.

Jodie wonders if the other witnesses would follow through if they knew she had signed her statement, but Ivan thinks that is a dead end. Ivan shows her a list of everything they’ve put in the flat including the CCTV cameras that will be installed tomorrow. He says these gangs are not stupid. They know it is over now because she is going to court. These things usually stop the moment the witness signs the form. When Ivan steps away from the table to deal with the worker, Jodie takes pictures of his notes. Once he returns, she signs the paperwork. After that, Jodie goes looking for Tyler Osho (Stephen Cromwell) who is another witness. The woman who answers the door insists Tyler isn’t going to change his mind and it is over. She asks Jodie to leave them alone before shutting the door in her face. Tyler shows up outside of her shop later.

He takes Jodie to his burned van and explains they filmed the whole thing. Tyler argues that you cannot fight these people. When she mentions another witness, Tyler says Pat died last week even though it didn’t have anything to do with this. Tyler admits it isn’t happening because he isn’t risking his life or his family for this. After all this, the police offered him a new lock and a few alarms. He warns her that the kids in the videos had knives and hammers. Jodie claims things were different before because things for nasty when the gang came. This is their chance to finally get rid of them and fix it. Tyler believes these people will kill her and she is doing it for a dodgy area. Kyle comes home to find his mother looking at old photos of himself, her, and Benjamin. He thought she hated looking at old photos. She tells him to go up and get started on his homework.

While sitting on a bench outside, a woman sits down next to Jodie. She asks her to look at how close she is now because that is how easy it is. She says they’re already inside and they have the police. Jodie is told to look into the second witness if she doesn’t believe her. She gives Jodie an address. Once she returns home, she finds a man installing a panic alarm. He gives her a button that she can use to get help. She asks if he does a lot of these and if it keeps people safe. He has. There is no way for anyone to get in unless someone lets them in. Later, Jodie tells Ivan about the woman. He suggests she could be the parent of a kid in trouble or something like that. Jodie believes they could have anyone in their pocket so she needs to keep her eyes open.

When she mentions what the woman said about having the police, Ivan insists they’re just trying to unsettle her. Jodie visits the address the woman gave her. She meets a man who says you can spread the truth on social media. He tells her that he already has the article complete and talks to media members. As for the police, they’re not interested because they don’t want to investigate their own. He has lived with his diabetic brother and had thousands of injections. Nothing ever went wrong until his brother became a witness in this case. Then, he injected himself twice. Although they want to say it is stress, he asks why they’re not missing a vial from the fridge. Someone had to bring a vial in. The problem is that nobody has been in here except him, his brother, and the police.

He can’t remember which police officers were here since eight or nine were coming and going that day. As Jodie walks home, she believes someone whispers as she walks by them. In the middle of the night, Jodie gets up to check the windows as a group puts on masks outside. The boys film themselves as they break into a house. The boys walk up the stairs before surrounding Cathy who is still asleep in bed. They frighten her before she falls down the stairs. One of the boys poses with her body. Jodie makes it to the hospital where she tells Whelan and Ivan that she wants out, but they say it isn’t that simple. Cathy is fine. Jodie threatens to become a hostile witness and make it worse than if she just didn’t go to court. Detective Whelan admits she can recant, but her superior officer will make her come to court anyway.

She’ll bank on the fact that the original statement will cover enough weight with the jury. Plus, the judge could hold Jodie in contempt for lying. Whelan tells her that she cannot change sides. They have two options, they can relocate or they can strengthen the hands they’re already playing. They can turn one of her rooms into a strong room which will act as a last line of defense. It’ll have its own phone line, reinforced steel door, and supplies. Jodie and Kyle sit with Cathy at the hospital. Jodie goes to work as usual. A woman sitting in the lobby stares at her. Jodie sees a red substance that looks like blood coming from the customer’s hair as the people in the lobby begin laughing. When Dee (Katherine Field) checks on her, Jodie realizes that none of that is happening. Once she goes back to the hospital, she runs into Paul who invites her and Kyle to his place.

Jodie doesn’t understand why everyone is trying to control what she is doing. She leaves after arguing there are enough people protecting her. Jodie is relieved when her mother wakes up at the hospital. Moments later, Jodie tells Detective Whelan that she wants to be relocated only to be told it is too late for that. When they were checking the people who sent the messages, they found that one of them hit a flag. One of the phones was used to send the same message to all of its contacts. It was sent to a pay-as-you-go phone registered to her ex-husband even though he died years ago. Jodie suggests he sold to him and just kept his number in his phone. She argues that her mother was attacked and this has nothing to do with Benji (Fiach Kunz). It is something they’ll have to rule out to ensure it is only connected to the witness intimidation.

Once they’ve done that, they’ll release the funding so they can put the relocation option back on the table. Jodie wants to know what is going to happen in the meantime. She goes home where a man is busy installing something else before going back to the hospital. Her mother checks on her. Jodie insists she is okay. Later, Whelan tells Jodie that her late husband’s number has been deleted from the registry. Once it gets sorted, they can move forward with the relocation. Whelan promises it is all going to be fine. Ivan and Whelan believe they’ve gotten into Jodie’s head. Whelan says nothing is going to happen besides taking this guy to trial and getting rid of this gang for good.

When they’re alone, Ivan asks Jodie if she has been thinking that the police are the ones lying. She wouldn’t be human if this wasn’t getting to her. Ivan touches her arm while telling her that she is doing amazing. He leaves to check the serial numbers upstairs for the warranties. Kyle sleeps with Cathy at the hospital while a guard stands by the door. As Jodie washes dishes at home, Ivan traps a spider using a glass. She tells him she is glad he stayed although Ivan insists this is his job. When she kisses him, Ivan steps back and says they shouldn’t only to go for another kiss. They end up sleeping together. Once Ivan leaves in the middle of the night, the alarm system begins blinking red.

Witness Number 3 Review

The second episode of Witness Number 3 got a bit slow near the end as the gang faded into the background and romance took the spotlight. It was a bit predictable that Ivan and Jodie would end up getting together at some point although there may be more to the story. There isn’t anything remarkable about Witness Number 3, but it is good in its own way. The acting for the main characters is good enough to be realistic.

The episode was strong enough to hold my interest and make me eager to know what is going to happen to Jodie and the gang. Although the episode focused a lot on Jodie’s relationships, there are many unanswered questions. I am intrigued to see if members of the gang are ever exposed and whether they’re ever charged for their crimes. Witness Number 3 has an interesting, unique story and is genuinely creepy at times.

The episode scores a 6 out of 10. Recaps of Witness Number 3 can be found on Reel Mockery here. Learn how to support our work at this link.
