Wentworth Season 9 Episode 2 Recap

As the episode begins, the guards rush in to find Marie Winter (Susie Porter) standing by Lou’s cell door. Jake Stewart (Bernard Curry) looks inside and sees what is going on before calling for assistance. He pleads with a hysterical Lou Kelly (Kate Box) to open the door, but Lou screams she isn’t going to let them take Reb away from her. Linda Miles (Jacqueline Brennan) rushes in, unlocks the door, and uses pepper spray to subdue Lou who holds a shank toward her. Joan Ferguson (Pamela Rabe) and Marie watch as guards remove Lou Kelly from the cellblock. Officer Miles checks for a pulse and Marie realizes her friend is already gone. Once things calm down a bit, Will Jackson approaches Lou in the medical unit and asks her to consent to a blood test. Will sits down and Lou begins telling him what happened before Reb’s murder.

She explains she woke up and Reb had this thing wrapped around his neck. Will argues it would be in her best interest to take a blood test. Once Will leaves, detectives scour the cell for evidence and Lou tries to wrap her head around what has happened. Once Reb’s body is removed, Boomer (Katrina Milosevic), Sheila (Marta Dusseldorp), and the others talk about poor Reb and the fact that Lou really loved him. Ruby Mitchell (Rarriwuy Hick) claims it was domestic violence. Meanwhile, Vera Bennett (Kate Atkinson) argues it had to be premeditated since they would’ve put up a fight. Then, she points the finger at Ferguson since Lou killed her goldfish and she is a psychopath, but Will explains CCTV proves Marie and Joan were in the yard at the time. In the hallway, Jake tells Ferguson and Marie that the forensics team has finished so they can return to their cells.

Marie asks about Lou and learns she is in medical. She quickly leaves Ferguson and tries to find out what happened from Sheila who says she had a revelation. Since Lou took away the most important person in her life, she decided to repay the favor by killing Reb. Marie can’t believe what she has done and admits she loved that boy and was trying to protect him. She warns Sheila that Lou is going to tear her apart when she finds out what happened. Sheila reminds her that she gave her the sedatives so they’re in this together now. We jump forward while Marie sobs in her cell and Ferguson listens from hers. In the morning, Joan meets with Dr. Greg Miller (David de Lautour) and receives her medication. He asks her if something is wrong before she admits she isn’t sure she wants to open herself up to this again.

She doesn’t want to experience those emotions again and says Marie crying in her cell caused her to rethink it. She wanted to help so Greg believes the medication will support empathy. Ferguson thought regaining her memory would pull her out of isolation, but she feels like she is being held hostage now. Greg insists she needs to find a balance so she can become a whole human once again. When asked what is in it for him, Greg says he staked his entire career on her having amnesia. Joan calls him an ambitious little man who is trying to build his reputation for curing a psychopath. Greg asks if there has been anyone she has ever wanted to connect with on a human level. When she leaves, she passes by Vera and stares at her briefly before continuing. Will approaches Lou to check on her and confirm she can return to her unit.

She learns her partner having an illness would likely help and that could buy her another three to six months. She tells Alex he is a genius before that conversation ends. Gavin (Huw Higginson) meets with Boomer to tell her about his website booming that to her. She has an idea and asks him to bring her a mini camera so she can video the whole thing for him. She argues they should have a conjugal so she can get the camera in private. She looks next to her and sees a little girl. She tells him how it’ll work before immediately going to Jake and asking him about Grace. She springs it on him and asks him to sign off on the conjugal visit for her.

She goes after Zaina (Louisa Mignone) and attacks her. Zaina relents and admits it wasn’t Ruby. She asks who it was before searching Marie’s cell and finding a bottle under her mattress. Marie enters and tells her she took that from Kaz because she thought she was going to use it on herself. Lou finds that some of Marie’s sheets have been ripped. She begins blaming Marie who eventually says it was Sheila and she did it because Lou poisoned those people at The True Path. Lou accuses Marie of telling her that and blaming her for Reb’s death. Marie suggests otherwise and says Lou started this when she poisoned Mendel. Lou begins choking Marie but lets her go at the last minute. She says Sheila is dead before we jump over to the showers. However, Vera isn’t sure she should believe Joan. She blames Ferguson and believes she is covering for herself. Vera tells Will about it and he agrees it is worth passing the information to the police. Rita gets a call from Ruby and immediately tells her their father’s death is getting closer. Ruby is allowed to talk to their father. Once he passes away, Ruby begins sobbing. Lou tells Sheila she is sick. Sheila doesn’t deny it and argues Lou is responsible for that. Will tells Vera that CCTV footage shows Sheila outside of the cellblock before Reb’s death. Will calls on the radio and orders them to bring Sheila, but Lou has her trapped. Lou gives Sheila a choice. She can drink the poison, or she can have her throat cut. Lou tells her she might survive drinking the poison, but Sheila doesn’t think so since Mendel didn’t. Sheila doesn’t believe there is a point in telling her she is sorry since she isn’t. She chugs the poison and soon begins suffering on the ground while the guards search for her. She crawls up to Lou and tells her to finish it, but Lou only kicks her back to the ground. Marie finds out where they’ve been and learns that Sheila drank the poison. Marie decides to do something about it, so she grabs the mop and begins choking her with it.

Wentworth Review

While this season of Wentworth has been much better than its predecessors, this episode didn’t have the same impact as the previous one. On the plus side, I am glad Sheila is out of the way. With so many characters, they need to be narrowed rapidly and this will help. I am moderately interested in seeing what happens to Ferguson and whether she can remain on the right path.

I like the fact that Marie and Lou eventually teamed up to put Sheila out of her misery. I was never fond of the Sheila character, so it wasn’t a big loss, but the death was satisfying, nevertheless. In other words, it didn’t have the same impact as Reb’s murder. The show would be better with fewer characters, but Rita is now going to take Sheila’s place and become an integral figure at Wentworth once again.

I find that disappointing since we all know what is going to come next. I just hope Rita doesn’t become the primary focus of the show from here on out because I am not a big fan of that character. I am sure she’ll be running the show in Wentworth soon enough, but I hope not. Regardless, this episode was okay but not quite as hard-hitting as the one before it. It scores a 7 out of 10.
