As Rita is being driven through the streets, she spots a homeless woman. It appears to be Joan Ferguson (Pamela Rabe).

Wentworth Review

I was hoping the finale would pull things together. Sadly, I wasn’t thrilled with it. For starters, Vera wasn’t killed. Did I want her killed? No. However, a main character should have been killed. Why build up so much drama in the last episode only to kill Vicky Kosta who has been criminally underused from the start anyway? Second, we got another death halfway through the episode. This time, May was shot and killed. Again, another irrelevant character being done away with. Big deal.

As always, the show is too lenient on the main characters. The twist that Sean killed Kaz was okay. However, the only thing that really saved the episode was Rick Donald himself. I’ve seen him a lot of shows but he really shined here. He is more versatile as an actor than I originally thought. If anyone stole the show this season, it was certainly Donald. The Liz storyline might have been good if it hadn’t been drug out for 2 or 3 seasons now. We all knew it was just a matter of time before Boomer took matters into her own hands.

Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse. Here comes Joan Ferguson. I knew something weird was going on when Pamela Rabe appeared on the credits on IMDB. The writers are getting desperate now and it clearly shows. Obviously, Wentworth should have been ended several seasons ago. The fact that it got this far is really surprising. Some people may have enjoyed it but I didn’t. I found it irritating that the same old failed formula has become a staple of the show.

The writers just aren’t willing to take risks. As for the old characters, they’ve been ruined. Boomer, Allie, Will, and even Liz were moot points this season. They were either on the back burner or just unlikable. A show that has reached this low of quality doesn’t deserve another season. To me, the finale was disappointing to say the least. A 5.5 out of 10 is deserved. Catch up with previous recaps of Wentworth right now.

Would like to add that BBTV Freemantle filed a copyright claim for my YouTube review for Wentworth. This will likely happen for this video too. The sad part? It only contained pictures of this season. The same pictures uploaded here. I guess they couldn’t handle the negative criticism. Shame on you guys for picking on the little man and trying to silence critics. I will be sure to write about the next season too. That is the difference between Reelmockery and the flunkies you can pay for good, comfy reviews. We tell the truth and Wentworth doesn’t like it.

Then I suggest you don’t review next series then.

I believe they took enough risks, afterall they did believe this was the end, they re-worked the ending, that is a massive risk in itself, knowing how salty some fans were still about Bea.

I may not agree but i stand firm on knowing this finale took a risk of being what Wentworth has always been: unpredictable and gripping until the end.

I’m just thankful Boomer gave up freedom, to give Liz her wishes.

    • ReelMockery says:

No need to get angry. Why does everyone think my opinion reflects on them? I thought the season before Bea’s death was terrible too. Perhaps, I just expected too much from the show over the past 4 seasons or so? Nobody can deny the fact that the quality has dropped significantly since the first 2 or maybe 3 seasons.

I sincerely hope you enjoy and find benefit from the recaps. If you don’t like negativity, I suggest ignore the reviews from now on. Thanks.

      • Simon Brennan says:

It reflects on me alot actually. I was one of the crew who worked on this entire season, and to read this is pretty disheartening to an amazing series cast and crew.

        1. It reflects how much effort the entire cast put in. It took a heavy toll on all of them and us as well, long shooting days and long days as a whole.

        2. We put 120% into this season as we thought it was the last season.

        3. Your open opinion throughout this entire season has been noted, the series will return for its productions and maximum effort will be put into the final 20 episodes.

        4. We take a lot of criticisms on board and we listen, we do, but when production is in full swing its full steam ahead.

While we all maintain maximum effort placed into the final 20 episodes. The fans voices were the loudest and we decided to listen, we all believed it was over last year. We will make sure its up to our standards of quality AUS television, our crew and cast will put all their soul and all their heart into this, because we have a loyalty to them and to the viewer as well.

        • ReelMockery says:

Ah, interesting. I know a lot of people still like the show. So, what do I matter? 🙂

I really liked the Brody character this season. Sad to see him go so quickly. Sometimes, I think the fans expect too much, me included. We ask for too much and expect too much too.

Most of the show is great. The acting is good. Character development has been steady. Special effects and such are great. Just wanted the writing to be a little riskier.

The final season will be 20 episodes? Wow that will be interesting.

          • John says:

The final season will not be 20 episodes. Wentworth was renewed for 2 more seasons. That means 10 episodes for each season.

    • Pat Reynolds says:

I thought the finale was pretty freaking awesome myself. Made the entire season worth watching. If you weren’t on the edge of your seat for this one I don’t know what to say. Can’t wait for season 8. Much better than OITNB

  2. Smooshiest says:

I started watching Wentworth when OITNB became boring and predictable. I was immediately hooked on Wentworth, but mainly because of Bea. When Joan killed her, it was devastating. I was so glad when they apparently (as it seems now) buried her alive and actually confirmed her dead body was in the grave. If they’re bringing the character back purely to end the series, I’m not sure I can be on board with that, but I won’t give up watching the show. Pamela Rabe is an excellent actress, but Joan is the worst villain on TV, hands down. I’m curious to see how her being back will affect Will and Vera.

  3. Daisy says:

A main character WAS killed off. Kaz. That was plenty for me. 😭
You had a little trouble keeping the sisters straight in your last paragraph. 😉

    • ReelMockery says:

You are correct. Hehe fixed it. These recaps take a very long time and I do rush them along a little too much sometimes. Have to with all the other things I have to juggle. :p Thanks

  4. Michael says:

This show has been amazing. All the way up until that last shot. Why bring The Freak back? I don’t get it. Pamela Rabe is an amazing actress, but it just doesn’t make sense. This season did a great job of transitioning to new characters, while closing out some storylines. Season 7 was a great pivot, I felt, towards making it possible to closeout the first 6 seasons while creating the potential for another multi-season saga that could have expanded through a season 8-10/11. Right now, most of the main cast from the first few seasons are gone. Perfect opportunity to bring in new characters to carry the show forward. Bringing Ferguson back just feels like betrayal, especially after being teased about her possibly being alive during season 6. I love Wentworth, and I’m still going to watch, but I’m disappointed, mostly because it feels out of character for Ferguson to have survived and not come after the trio. If Ferguson was going to come back, it should have been in season 6 as the blackmailer. If any of the people involved with this show read this, I want you to know that you’ve made a remarkable show, and despite being upset about seeing Ferguson, I’ll probably get over it (since I’m writing this just after finishing watching the finale just minutes ago). Maybe I’m just in shock still. If you’re soliciting feedback from fans (and you probably aren’t), if you’re bringing back characters, my wife and I would love to see Frankie written in a prominent role next season, I mean you’re already bringing back Ferguson. See, there it is. I’ve made peace with Ferguson coming back. I just needed time. In any case, maybe have Frankie be the one to finally put her down, but not in a way that jeopardizes her freedom. Overall, congratulations on a great show and great season. Looking forward to the final 20 episodes. Much love from a fan in the US!

PS: If anyone recommend any other good shows from Australia, I’d be grateful.

    • ReelMockery says:

Agree. It feels like a slap in the face to bring back The Freak. After all, we’ve dealt with her death for 2 seasons now. Can’t believe this has been renewed for 2 more seasons.

Would be cool if they get rid of the entire cast and start like the original did.

If you’re looking for good Aussie shows, you might like Harrow. Slightly boring at times but it pays off. Underbelly is a must! Glitch is pretty good too.

  5. Suzie Q says:

Frankie being back for 10 minutes just didn’t seem necessary, I love Frankie but she needs at least two episodes in an important role not to just be shoved in there to remind us she exists. I think maybe bringing her back won’t be interesting enough unless you jail her and that would make so much drama that already happened mean nothing, just like Ferguson. seems like the most popular characters are being brought back instead of replaced with equally good characters. I also agree with killing off a main character, but I assumed they’d have Vera have a miscarriage (which of course is cruel) but would have made for a HUGELY dramatic episode.

Overall, I will be watching next season, as hopeful as ever. It will forever replace OITNB in our hearts and be vastly better.

    • ReelMockery says:

I agree. I wouldn’t be surprised if they attempt to bring Frankie back. Sincerely hope they do not. The Freak coming back is bad enough.

      • John says:

Loved seeing Frankie back, even for only a few minutes. But isn’t that scene totally unrealistic? Ex-cons are prohibited by law from visiting inmates. The writers really messed up here. There was no need to bring Frankie back even for just a few minutes. Totally nonsensical scene.

        • ReelMockery says:

I could be wrong, but I think the original played out this way. They weren’t allowed to return for this very reason. I am not positive though.

          • John says:

Well, realism aside. What was the purpose of bringing Franky back anyway? Especially for a boring 5 minute scene? We all knew Liz had dementia. Why bring Frankie on board to confirm this? I think the writers are starting to get desperate.

          • ReelMockery says:

I think so as well. I think the Freak coming back is a sign of that. I am shocked the show is getting 2 more seasons. That floored me.

They’re at the end of their back of tricks I think.

          • John says:

Seems like the writers depend too much on the Freak to carry the show. Having her back in flashbacks in season 6 served no purpose. Now she is coming back in season 8? Definitely wreaks of desperation. Like you, I am surprised the show is being brought back for another 2 seasons. It should have ended this year. All the characters have run their course and it’s time to put the series to bed. It was a great series up until now. It’s time to say goodbye for good to Wentworth. Having more seasons will just make a once great show become a parody of itself much like Orange Is The New Black became a parody of itself.

          • ReelMockery says:

100% agree. Sometimes I think we as fans bring it on ourselves. I know there are shows that have been canceled until fans cry out for another season. We get that extra season and it stinks.

Not sure what is happening here though. Must still be doing okay ratings wise. If it doesn’t get any better though, I bet they’ll regret added 2 seasons. We’ll know as soon as we see how the next season plays out.

  6. John says:

Vicky Kosta should have been a main character. She is so convincing in her role and is the only real badass on the show. She is much better than that useless, whiny, needy Allie. The Allie character should have been killed off right after Bea was killed. Allie is so unlikeable. I never thought I’d dislike a character more than Doreen from the first 3 seasons. But Allie has run her course a long time ago. I hope she isn’t around for the final 2 upcoming seasons.

  7. Burton says:

I definitely enjoy Wentworth more than OITNB, which I find has too many comical eye-rolling moments. My one major complaint about Wentworth is how unrealistically sloppy the characters are when they interact in illegal and/or untoward ways. For example, when a guard has a “private” moment with an inmate right in the hallway and hand drugs over, etc. knowing that cameras are everywhere and anybody could walk by at any moment; or when the new acting Commissioner keeps rendezvousing with Marie overnight, knowing they cameras are filming them….even their obvious body language when they’re together in his office in front of that huge interior office window with staff right outside working….it really forces me to suspend disbelief way too much. Guys, try bring a little more realistic.

  8. Lester says:

I just finished the season on Netflix. Overall, it remains entertaining. The Bea story was a too tear- jerking for my taste. More than anything, I hope Ferguson doesn’t reappear.

  9. Suse says:

I am very particular in most aspects of life, but somehow not critical of tv shows that I like. Reading recaps and reviews is interesting but I never understand the critic’s complaints about the writing etc. My husband and I love Wentworth. It’s awesome! Glad Vera, Will, Jake and the other regulars are still alive. Can’t wait until next season, though having Ferguson back will be odd. Not overthinking it. It’s fiction. Entertaining!

  10. Andrew Taylor says:

I agree if you are one of the few who don’t like the series then keep your reviews to yourself. Fully enjoyed all season of Wentworth.

    • ReelMockery says:

Good. I am glad. You can kindly ignore the reviews at the bottom. Thank you. I hope the recaps have at least been somewhat helpful. Thanks for the visit and the comment. 🙂

      • Andrew Taylor says:

        Thank you 🙏🏽

        • John says:

Why should someone who does not have a positive thought about the show be silenced? Wentworth is still a great show but it has its flaws like every other show. If negative comments are not liked, simply skip over them. But don’t say one must keep a negative comment to himself just because you don’t agree with it.

          • ReelMockery says:

I think people take it personal. I watch a lot of stuff and like it but I know a lot of people hate it. lol. I loved the first few seasons. Don’t worry lol. I’ll keep doing my thing 🙂

          • John says:

I agree. People take criticism of a TV show far too personally, just like sports. Good on you that you’ll continue to speak your mind. I’ll keep doing the same as well.

          • ReelMockery says:

As we both should! 🙂 lol

          • ReelMockery says:

I wish I knew. Wentworth or BK Freemantle requested the removal of my YouTube video reviewing the season. Sad since it only had pictures just like this page. Claimed a copyright infringement for “pictures” no videos. Wow. I am stunned at their actions honestly.

I guess they do not want people to speak their mind. If they do not want people to criticize their show, they might want to make it better.

  11. Jay says:

Just finished the finale tonight, and have enjoyed reading this recap and comments. While I was taken aback to read all the criticism of bringing back la Ferguson…I myself am thrilled at the thought…I can understand it (the criticism).

As to the seasaon, I thought it was fantastic, and couldn’t wait to tune in for each episode. Would have to agree that the Allie character has passed her sell-by date, and I too would have liked some more story development with the Kosta character. I really enjoyed Rita, Marie and Boomer, and I’m’ anxious to see how Joan’s being back might affect Will, Vera and Jake’s having been involved in some skulduggery of their own.

Thanks again for recap and comments.

    • ReelMockery says:

You’re welcome. I’ve stuck with it this far so I’ll finish the next seasons too. I would assume things are going to go bad for the guards. Wondering how they’re going to play their Ferguson angle. Will she be a prisoner or will she harass people from the shadows? Should be interesting at the least.

  12. Joan Ferguson says:

Totally don’t agree with your opinion, the show is still great and amazing. Can’t stop watching it with friends and family. So captivated by the twists and storytelling. You sound angry and not appreciative of this show. If you don’t like it so much. Stop watching it. Simple.

    • ReelMockery says:

Love the name. Some people just don’t like it. Nevertheless, these recaps seem to be helpful to some people. And, I am still slightly hopeful that it’ll get better.

So, I’ll be sticking around if you don’t mind.

  13. Den Johnson says:

I know when they announced which “legacy” characters were coming into the series I was a bit iffy with Jane Hall coming into the series after being on Neighbours, and newcomer Zoe, alongside Kate Box. But i’m pretty keen for the first batch of episodes. I just know the cast will put their blood, sweat and tears into it. I know when Pino posted a pic on twitter with the scripts and stuff, a few people are gonna end up with PTSD probably Linda, the prison is under threat of closure (that from a TV week article).

I just want more Linda, Will to piss off and Marie to be transferred cause I’m sick of that storyline. If Season 8 and 9 can live up to Season 7 then I can die happy.

Season 7 imo is on the same page as season 3.

    • ReelMockery says:

I like Kate Box. She has been in some great shows lately. However, I was never too thrilled with the Lou Kelly and Rebel Keane characters from the original Prisoner. I feel that was on the original’s downslide and the episodes were a bit hit and miss by then.

We shall see though. It will be hard to draw me back in but I’ll give it a chance. Hope they do away with last season’s storylines and start from scratch.
