As this episode of Trigger Point begins, Alex (Tomiwa Edun) is busy setting up the cameras for The Wave. Commander John Francis (Julian Ovenden) speaks to the team about the latest attack at the government building in which Cabinet Minister Matthew Pulfree was killed. Helen Morgan (Natalie Simpson) says the bomb was in a laptop belonging to Ollie Jenkins who was also killed. They doubt it was a suicide bombing. Alex calls the team moments later. He warns the team that there will be another attack and cameras have been set up so they can film it. Lana (Vicky McClure) says they received a link from an untraceable messaging service. Alex tells her they’re loading the devices into a van.

He is unable to see the registration number and he doesn’t think a tracer will work either. Seconds later, a man tells Alex they’re ready for him. Hope interrupts Alex so he has to step away from the computer. He tells Hope (Bethan Cullinane) that there are 12 remote cameras. They’re all connected to a Wi-Fi range extender that will act as a base. Once Alex figures out where they’re going, he sends an address in the Docklands to Lana. The team rushes to the Bullion Wharf. Once they arrive, they begin using jammers and wait for the anti-drone system to get up and running. Lana speaks to the team and asks them to get everyone indoors. Helen suggests they should evacuate the entire area. Lana says they just need to get as many people off the streets as possible.

Hassan Rahim (Nabil Elouahabi) goes in the other direction so they can cover more ground. Alex manages to send a link to the drone cameras to Lana. Hope nearly catches him. Lana soon finds out that the camera feeds won’t load. Before long, they begin hearing explosions all around them. Lana realizes the cameras are on scooters instead of drones. She tries to stop a woman on a scooter, but it explodes before he can reach her. Lana gets knocked to the ground. Danny (Eric Shango) rushes over to see if she is okay. Lana’s mom tries to call her but she doesn’t answer. Sonya (Kerry Godliman) checks on Lana and tells her she needs to take better care of herself. She reminds Lana she is there in case she wants to talk about it.

Francis tells Lana he’ll need her full report for the home secretary. Helen informs Francis that all the remaining scooters have been accounted for and disarmed. Lana goes to her mom’s house where she hears an argument. Lana’s mom says something has to change because Jeff (Kevin Eldon) is never there. Lana tells Val (Tamzin Griffin) she has to go. Val says she only wanted Billy to be the man he could’ve been. She claims he needed them more. Lana calls Danny to say she needs a few minutes before returning to her parents. She tells them off before going outside to Danny. At the station, Hassan complains about Lana running after the woman on the scooter. He reminds her that complacency is the number one cause of death for expos in the field.

Hassan asks her not to die on their watch. The team learns The Wave has posted another video. During the meeting, Francis directs all his questions to Hassan. Lana thinks Alex’s information was helpful, but Francis says his assumption that drones were involved cost them lives. Lana sincerely believes he is trying to help. Francis argues that feelings don’t matter and she isn’t a detective. He says Alex’s intel is always a little too late to help. DI Batra (Maanuv Thiara) and Hassan try to side with Lana, but Francis refuses to listen to them. Lana gets upset and leaves. Francis tells the others that Alex will remain a suspect until they have evidence proving otherwise. Helen catches Lana in the bathroom and tells her to act like the sun shines out of Francis’s backside to win him over.

Lana insists she knows how to deal with a-holes. Helen says Thom didn’t like Francis either but he still won him over. Once she returns, she learns that Alex is back on the phone because there will be more attacks today. Alex says whatever happened earlier is all connected to what happens neck. It’s something about a big house and will be their crowning glory. After Alex hangs up, the team theorizes what the next target might be. Francis worries it could be Buckingham Palace. Lana and the others talk about the Bullion Wharf. Batra explains it is actually opened by corporations. Hancock, Seale, and Poole are leading the charge. Helen says that is one of the firms behind Tritia Global Analytics. HSP is currently owned by Webster King (Oliver Senton).

Once Francis returns, he is told about Webster King. Francis says he’ll attend the COBRA meeting and the second unit can visit King’s estate in the country. He wants to manage Webster King. Francis takes Hassan with him. Helen and Lana speak to Inspector John Pierce who says his unit is searching the perimeter. Then, they speak to Duncan McMorton who is in charge. Mac refuses to believe a bomb has been planted under their watch. He eventually agrees to cooperate. Mac says a cake was delivered before asking Lana to try to blend in. They hear Webster speaking to the group nearby. A man takes pictures of him as he says his security team needs to do a few checks.

Once they find nothing, Mac says he told them so. Before they leave, Lana says there is one more thing she needs to check. She checks the bathrooms outside and finds two locked doors. Lana comes out and tells the others that they’re bolted shut. When she climbs under the unit, she notices what appears to be a repair job. She removes the panel and finds a timer-operated IED. They begin evacuating the guests. Lana moves the portable toilets to prevent the explosion from killing anyone. After the explosion, Danny and Mac rush over to Lana to check on her. Francis arrives to speak to Webster about the explosion. Then, King is introduced to Lana Washington. Once Webster leaves, Lana tells Francis about the explosive device.

Francis says they need to get on a front foot now and he wants to start by bringing Alex into custody. Lana tries to convince him not to make Alex wear a wire. When Lana makes it home, Alex approaches her because he needs her help. He believes she can help him stop these people, but Lana thinks she’ll have to call this in. Once she agrees to help, Alex sits down and begins explaining how he got into this mess. He explains his 13-year-old daughter was bullied online until she killed herself. Alex complains that the police didn’t do anything about it. When he was at his lowest, he hooked up with a cyber group online. They were fighting back against big tech and big business. It felt like justice until the group decided to cross the line into the real world.

He worries that many more will die before they’re stopped and he could end up being the fall guy. Alex agrees to do whatever she thinks because he trusts her. He wants to do this even though he could get killed. If he doesn’t make it, he wants Lana to tell them that Benjamin Mamouda was one of the good guys. Lana promises not to tell the police his real name, but she wants to know everything else. Alex says they’re planning something else right now and it’s something terrifying. It looks like the bombers are installing bombs in teddy bears.

 

Trigger Point Review

The fourth episode of Trigger Point’s second series was okay although it doesn’t have the same oomph as the first. The series still has its moments and it remains as watchable as ever, but the story isn’t as captivating as it could be. If it weren’t for the explosions, this would be like everything else. A basic story, politically driven crimes, family drama, one expo doing it all, and a boss who refuses to listen.

The story and series in general don’t motivate me to give a hoot or try to guess what the outcome will be. In some ways, it feels like the series was pieced together as it went along without any forethought. For a series about terrorists and explosions, it leaves a lot to be desired in the excitement department.

With sufficiently low expectations, viewers may find this to be a good way to spend six hours. It likely won’t be a memorable experience though. The episode scores a 5.5 out of 10.
