As the third episode of Treason begins, Kara (Olga Kurylenko) pulls a bag out of the water that contains a gun, money, and other things. She is kidnapped and taken to Irena Belova (Avital Lvova) who asks if there is something she isn’t telling her about the poisoning. Kara claims she isn’t involved before saying she is retired and Irena threw her out. Irena questions what she is doing in London then. She shows Kara a picture of the men who were on her team in Baku where she first met Adam Lawrence. Irena asks if they were lovers and if she still has feelings for him. Kara is told to stay away from him. Irena warns her they’ll make her disappear if she does anything the British can blame on them.

Maddy (Oona Chaplin) walks in as Adam (Charlie Cox) makes breakfast for Ella (Beau Gadsdon). She questions where he was last night so Adam claims he was in a briefing with Rosanno trying to tie up some loose ends. Maddy reveals Ella woke up screaming last night saying it felt like they were taking her again. She also said it was a woman who found her. Adam claims it was one of his undercover agents, but doesn’t want to say anything else. He suggests taking off for a few days so they can have a chance to talk. Adam reveals he is going to resign because he can’t risk something else happening. He meets with Audrey Gratz (Alex Kingston) to tell her they’ve uncovered a blackmail plot in which she is the target.

He knows that she used a government plane to ply in a palliative care doctor for her mother. Audrey explains that she begged her. She explains why she did it before saying Sir Martin reassured her this had gone away. Adam says they’re trying to figure out specifically how the intel leaked. Audrey thinks he should start with her leadership rival. After playing a game with Kirby, Lord Anton Melnikov (Danila Kozlovskiy) tells the press that the new initiative uses sport to encourage greater social mobility. He praises Robert (Simon Lenagan) and claims he knows how to unlock a person’s true potential. Anton notices Kara so he decides to speak to her outside. When he learns that she has the file, he asks her to approach Gratz with it.

Anton offers to buy her more time with Belova if she does this. Adam invites Patrick Hamilton (Adam James) into his office so he can learn more about Robert Kirby. Patrick says he has only been in the Common for seven years and his campaign is being funded by Anton Melnikov. Anton managed to avoid being sanctioned over Ukraine by severing all ties with Russia and doubling down on philanthropic agendas. Adam sees a picture of Anton with Kara. He asks Zoe (Dinita Gohil) to arrange a meeting with Anton. Adam refuses to tell Patrick about it because he can’t trust anyone right now. Patrick says he might be done with him too if he won’t let him help. Kara meets with Audrey to confront her with the paperwork.

Kara threatens to go public with the information if she doesn’t pull out of the race before leaving. Adam meets with Anton who is eager to help because he feels he owes a debt to the country. Adam tells him about the blackmail plot and warns him to be on the lookout for similar approaches. When asked if he is a target, Adam says his name has come up. He also tells Anton that Kara Yusova might be involved. Anton pretends not to know her. Audrey calls Adam to tell him about the woman who threatened her. Adam tells her not to drop out because they’ll win. Maddy meets with Dede Alexander (Tracy Ifeachor) who shows her the evidence they have against Adam. Maddy shows her the picture of Kara and Adam together.

She tells Dede it is over since Adam is resigning. Dede insists they’re going to bring in Kara and find out why she put Adam in place although they’ll leave Adam out of it. Dede tells Maddy that she can help track his movements and that is the only way to keep him out of prison. When Kara meets with Anton, he tells her Audrey isn’t pulling out of the race so she must approach her again. She suggests giving the information to a journalist. Anton tells her that Adam has connected them. He has to make this work and he can’t do that if he is getting heat from MI6. She begins questioning whether he has any pull in Moscow. Anton explains his money is frozen and he is persona non grata in Russia.

Once Kirby is Prime Minister, he intends to gift wrap him to the Kremlin. All will be forgiven and they won’t have to love over their shoulders anymore. Anton threatens to turn her in for the attempted murder of Martin Angelis if she doesn’t help. Adam plays a game with the kids at home. He receives a text asking him to call K. Adam calls Kara to tell her he wants nothing to do with her since he knows she is working with Anton. Kara tells him this is more serious than he thinks. Dede informs Maddy that the courier is about to make a drop. When Frank (John Lightbody) gives it to her, she pretends she bought the gift card for Adam. Kara tells Adam to meet her because she knows who had Ella kidnapped.

Maddy puts the card in Adam’s wallet. Later that night, Maddy gets a call from Dede telling her Adam is on the move. She is told it is over once she IDs the woman. Maddy joins Dede in the surveillance van while Adam is followed to the skate park. Gore tries to listen to them as Adam meets with Kara. He asks if Anton took his daughter. Kara says it wasn’t him although he took advantage of the situation. He wants to go home so he is trying to get Kirby into number 10. She doesn’t want to tell him who took his daughter until he tells her what happened in Baku. She had five local men working for her and guaranteed their safety.

They were tortured and strung up on the street where their kids could see them. Kara wants to know who killed them because she made a promise to their families. She suggests Angelis might have a file on Baku at his house too. Kara reveals she saw a blood pressure cuff when she found Ella. Adam knows that is standard US procedure post-Guantanamo. Dede and Maddy hear Kara accuse the CIA of taking Ella. Adam encourages her to walk away because her government won’t help if the CIA gets her. Kara realizes that they’ve been followed so they split. Agent Gore is attacked, but a picture of Kara is captured on her body camera. Maddy won’t say whether she is the woman Adam met last night. She eventually says yes.

Dede reminds her that they’re not her blood and she saved her life in a war zone. Although Dede claims she is trying to protect her, Maddy calls her a monster. Adam searches for something at home before getting a call from Kara who wants to know why he didn’t turn her over to the CIA. He explains they’re in this together because he doesn’t know who to trust. Kara wants whatever Angelis has on Baku and he needs intel to stop Anton. She doesn’t know why he is messing around. She is outside of Martin’s house and ready to go in alone. Adam gets the kids dressed and tells them they need to go. Mary Angelis (Clare Holman) invites them inside moments later. Maddy calls to tell him to come home so they can talk about this in person.

He won’t tell her anything. Kara comes inside with Adam even though Martin is on his way home. Callum keeps Mary busy while Adam and Kara try to get the files they need. When Ella catches them together, Adam explains to her that there is something he needs. Moments later, Kara gets a message from Adam telling her to abort the mission. Martin (Ciaran Hinds) gets home and says hello to his wife. Adam gets a text from Kara who tells him the files are gone. Martin goes inside to talk to Adam and the kids. The kids distract Mary to give Kara enough time to escape. Martin tells Adam that the files are not here. Adam claims he just wants to stop Anton who wants to put Kirby in number 10.

Martin says he did some digging on Adam and found a transcript between two SVR agents talking about a British agent they used to kill five men in Baku. Although they called him Dorian, Martin knew it could only be Adam. Martin kept him close ever since so he could control the situation, but Adam denies being a double agent. Martin isn’t going to stop Kirby because he wants to bring the roof in on him as soon as he is in number 10. He intends to remind people why they need a strong MI6. He will make sure the whole world knows Adam is a Russian asset. Adam yells for the kids to leave.

Treason Review

Treason is slowly creeping towards its finale as Adam’s actions are discovered and Martin intends to hang him out to dry. Anton is working to get Kirby elected so he can return to Russia and repair his shattered relationships. While Treason has many interesting ideas, it is low on substance meaning viewers may have to put in a lot of effort to truly care.

Treason is dry without much emotion so it isn’t easy to cheer for any of the characters. The basics are spot on and the performances are mostly good, but Treason’s story and lack of character development make it a mostly dull affair. Casual viewers willing to overlook the glaring believability issues may enjoy Treason more though.

The series is just okay so it might be an okay binge when everything else has already been viewed. The episode scores a 5.5 out of 10. Recaps of Treason are available on Reel Mockery here.
