As the final episode begins, we see everything that happened to Jim (Tim Roth) and his family over the past few years. After that, Jim goes to Michael’s crack and begin painting something nearby. When he finishes, we see “Dig Here” with an arrow pointing towards Catherine’s body. Jim walks through an old house and imagines he sees Sara Lunt. He walks past another room and sees Whitey (Oliver Coopersmith) and Helen (Leanne Best). Then, he sees Michael and Frank (Ian Puleston-Davies). Jim wakes up, rolls over, and puts his hand over Angela (Genevieve O’Reilly). Next, Anna Worth (Abigail Lawrie) walks through a trailer park and stops at a swing set. Jim and Angela chat about small things before she admits she thinks she is scared.

He tells her that they can always run. Then, she wonders what they’ll do after today and Jim suggests they’ll do what they’ve always done. They’ll figure it out when they get there. They have sex. When they’re finished, they talk about that being the last time they have sex. Anna bursts through the door and tells her parents they should get married today. Detective Vine tends to Catherine’s body. Michael Ryan (Ian Hart) arrives and learns that the police found a dead body. A girl gives Michael something that someone gave to her. The man knew Michael would come. Michael opens the envelope and looks at the paper inside. Jack goes for a walk while Anna takes picture of her mother. They talk about the wedding before Angela tells Anna she is the greatest thing to ever happen to her.

She goes on to tell Anna she is smarter, stranger, and funnier than she will ever realize. Jack visits Kayden (Julia Carlile) and Mary to give them an envelope which is likely a wedding invitation. Mary invites him in and says he can’t get married looking like that. Anna and Angela play games while Mary tries to help Jim find something to wear to his wedding. Meanwhile, Michael Ryan loads a handgun. Anna stops and asks her mother if she is scared. Angela admits she thought she was but she doesn’t think it is fear. She thinks it is anticipation. Jim steps outside and finds that the station wagon has been painted by the kids. Meanwhile, Detective Vine oversees the digging into the crack. Michael Ryan sits alone and drinks. A woman approaches him and they begin chatting about kids.

Michael says he never had kids. The woman says something about Michael making his mark on Liverpool before he decides to leave. Anna and Angela walk down the pier while Jack drives a train with the kids in the back. They meet with Jack’s family and Jack gives his future wife a big kiss. Seconds later, Mary conducts a ceremony for the couple’s wedding. They rush her along. We jump forward to that night and see everyone partying in the building nearby. During the party, Angela steps outside alone and finds Michael Ryan staring at her from a distance. Jack and Anna exit and join her. The lights turn on and we see an amusement park behind Michael. Jack kisses Mary and tells her goodbye but the family walks toward Michael. They walk through the Pleasure Land amusement park with their guns drawn.

They split up and go after Michael. Jack shoots a woman wearing a mask that makes her look like Michael. Then, a bunch of other Michael lookalikes is released. Michael sneaks up on Anna and tries to take her hostage. He takes her gun and tells her she doesn’t have to die. He explains there is no life for her parents after this is over. Anna asks Michael what he wants. He claims he wants to give her a chance before asking her to tell her parents to leave and they can meet elsewhere tomorrow. He promises not to go after Jack and Angela if they leave. As for Anna, Michael wants to give her a chance to start here. Angela and Jack get trapped before Anna tells Michael to call his soldiers off. He gives her the gun back and tells her to meet tomorrow.

The siren sounds and the soldiers leave. Jack and Angela find themselves alone. They meet with Anna moments later and she tells them about the meeting. She meets him and the others leave. Angela and Jack don’t think she should believe Michael and Angela suggests they can get Anna out of this too. They play bumper cars and ride the coaster before returning to the trailer. That night, Jack and Angela discuss possible career options before they wonder what Anna is going to do. A shipping container is pulled from under the crack and opened.

There is a bunch of bones inside so Vine says he is going to find Michael Ryan. Next, Michael waits at The Lakeside Inn for Anna. When approached, he tells the woman from yesterday what he is doing. Jack and the family sit in bed before Anna asks if they’ll be okay without her. She asks if they’ll look after one another. They head outside and carjack a guy driving an ice cream van. Michael gets tired of waiting and decides to leave. He goes to his brother’s gravestone before Detective Vine approaches him. Vine asks him about the Worth family but Michael doesn’t want to talk about it. He tells Vine to show some respect since they’re at his brother’s grave. Vine confirms he knows what Michael did all those years ago. Michael catches him off guard and attacks him.

He pokes his eyes out with his thumbs before leaving. Anna and her family continue driving the ice cream van. Mary tells her kids to come down because she wants to talk to them. She says someone needs her help like they did once. It might get messy and it might come this way. She wants the kids to stay away from the house for the time being. Mary meets with the Worth family and takes Anna with her. As they drive along, Anna changes her mind but they see Michael Ryan in front of them. He shoots through the car’s windshield and shoots Mary. Anna is covered in blood and Michael drives away from the scene. Mary passes away. Jack and the others go to Kayden and tell her what happened. Meanwhile, Michael Ryan sets up three chairs. He loads a gun with two bullets.

Before too long, Mary’s house is surrounded by guys with guns. Jack gives Kayden a set of keys. Then, Jack and the family go with the men. They’re taken to Michael Ryan. They sit in the chairs Michael put out and he begins asking them how they are. Anna offers to come with him now but Michael says he was wrong about her. Michael explains he is going to kill two of them and let one of them live because he wants them to know what it is like to have nothing. Anna says he should kill her to hurt them. As for Jack, he says he is bored so he asks to be shot too. Michael puts a bag over Angela’s head and asks Jack if he’d like to say something to his wife. Angela begins laughing. All three of them laugh at Michael and say it feels uninspired although it was 20 years in the making.

Jack is stood up. Michael throws Anna to the ground and begins kicking her. Angela tells him to pick someone and stick with it before Jack gets involved. Michael tries to shoot Jack but ends up killing his men. Then, his gun is empty. Michael sits down and a bag is placed over his head. They shoot above Michael’s head before the police arrive outside. The Worth family leaves in the elevator after throwing Michael the gun. Michael contemplates killing himself as cops storm the building. Jack and his family hide on the rooftop. Jack tells his family he would like to see Paris even though they’ve already been there. Anna suggests going somewhere quiet where nobody knows them. They hold hands before leaping down and hitting the roller coaster.

 

Tin Star Review

Tin Star has never been afraid to bend the rules and take chances. So, why did the writers refuse to take chances with the finale? Sadly, I think we were given the easiest finale they could’ve come up with since fans of the Worth family got what they wanted without killing the main villain.

Sadly, the only significant character that died this finale was Mary and her death was a bit pointless. What was the point of dragging Mary all the way out there only for Anna to change her mind seconds later? I did like the Michael Ryan lookalikes having their way with the Worth family but the finale as a whole was not good.

This entire season feels like a waste of talent. With so many great actors and actresses, we should’ve got something better than this. The finale scores a 6 out of 10. Previous recaps of Tin Star can be found on Reel Mockery.
