Tin Star Season 3 Episode 5 Recap

As the episode begins, Catherine McKenzie (Tanya Moodie) is still in disbelief. A police officer approaches and tells her she should go to the hotel. Catherine turns around and addresses journalists. She says it was monsters and she promised Jesse (Percelle Ascott) that monsters did not exist. She goes on to say that she was wrong and there is nowhere for those monsters to hide. Catherine says she won’t stop until Jesse’s murderers are brought to account. Then, Jim Worth (Tim Roth) sneaks into a building with his new dog so he can surprise Mary. He thought Angela (Genevieve O’Reilly) and Anna (Abigail Lawrie) might’ve been there but they’re not. They agree to share a drink while they wait. Michael Ryan (Ian Hart) arrives at the protest and receives money to get rid of the protesters.

One of the men stops him and begins talking about Sean. Michael knows they’re angry and want to get revenge but they should stay away from the Worths. He tells them to go away before Mary tells Jack she is sure they’re fine. Mary promises she is fine and wonders if she should think about going straight. She contemplates opening a bakery and invites Jack if his crusade doesn’t work out. Jack wants more assistance. He confesses that something happened that shouldn’t have. Mary asks him why he doesn’t just stop before anyone else gets hurt. Next, we join Angela on a subway train. She helps a pregnant woman who nearly falls down. The woman sits with her and they begin talking about children. Angela tells the woman that it doesn’t get easier.

Anna walks along the streets before sitting down. She is approached by a girl who asks if she had a rough night. That girl, Tara, gives her a drink. They’re sitting outside of a university so Tara asks Anna what she is studying but Anna claims to be a tourist. Michael’s two buddies spot Anna and decide to ignore his wishes. When the guys approach, Anna tells them to screw off. They explain Sean McGrath was their cousin before one guy pulls out a knife. Anna throws the coffee in his face. She attacks both with a backpack before running away. Michael grabs Angela from behind and holds a gun to her back. They talk about Danny who Angela says was a fool. He reminds her about the night they stayed behind in the pub and opened a glass of whiskey.

They chatted and Michael gave Angela his jacket. She says she stayed because she was 19, had only started, and he was her boss. She claims she was terrified and she doesn’t like it when Michael calls her Angie. Michael says he knows Angela and he wonders how she can protect his niece when she couldn’t protect her own son. She tells Michael he can’t have it both ways and laughs that he wants to play happy family now. Michael tries to find out why she killed his brother but she says Michael killed Danny by sending him to the roof. He puts something in Angela’s pocket and tells her they’ve already lost one kid. He doesn’t think she wants to lose another. Catherine takes a shower while Kayden (Julia Carlile) and the other protesters kick things into another gear.

Jack takes the dog and tries to steal a car. A man asks Catherine about her decision to decline a family liaison officer. She admits it and says it is bad enough being locked up and being fed crap. The man shows her the list found on Sara Lunt’s body. She pretends the note means nothing to her but she is told the names that have been crossed off belong to dead people. He tells her that her name and Michael Ryan’s name are on the list too. She says Lunt was a real, honorable detective and he isn’t. He lets Catherine knows that the Worths are prime suspects and that Jack accused her of trying to murder him and his family. Catherine leans forward and tells Detective Vine to remember who he is talking to because she is still his boss. Vine admits it is true and says that is why he’ll do everything possible to get to the bottom of this.

Kayden watches as Detective Vine leaves before Jack arrives at a house and leads the dog inside. He goes to the back and takes a man’s cigarette before puffing on it. Jack asks the man about Helen. He knows her and says she is pretty but there is nothing behind her eyes. Jack grabs the man’s wheelchair and takes him inside before pushing him into a table. Jack continues until he enters Helen’s (Leanne Best) room and find her sleeping. She wakes up and smiles as Jack touches her cheek. Anna meets up with her mother and grabs her hand before Anna tells her mother about Sean’s cousins.

She checks on her mother before asking about her father. Jack tilts Helen’s chair back and gives her a kiss. He puts a picture of Whitey face down. He grabs a pillow and smothers Helen to death. On his way out, he leaves behind a stack of cash and the man asks for a joint. Instead, Jack gives the man his dog. Then, Kayden calls him to tell him where they should meet. He agrees to come there but says he needs to make a stop first. Anna and Angela play a few games and discuss Anna’s relationship with Jesse. Anna talks about going to university when everything is finished. Jack goes to a store and watches a news report about the death of Sara Lunt. The man makes a nasty comment about cops so Jack hits him in the face with a can of oil. He leaves the man in a pool of blood before exiting the store. Ann and her mother eat.

Anna decides that she wants to go back and get Catherine but Angela believes they should slow down. Angela says the list was incorrect from the beginning and finishing it isn’t going to make her feel better or get her into university. She goes on to say that two names are missing and they are hers and Jack’s, but Anna doesn’t understand that. Angela says when Anna was five months old Jack found out that Michael and Danny weren’t just trafficking drugs. They were hurting people too. They killed people to protect their drug shipments. Angela admits she ran away. Anna isn’t sure how to react to that. Jack joins them a second later. Anna wonders who this is really about before Jack tells them he knows where she is. Sean’s cousins return to Michael and apologize for not listening to him. He apologizes and says it has to be done.

Jack makes his way inside the motel where Catherine is staying while Catherine and the guard step onto the balcony again. Jack goes up the stairs while mark tells Catherine her name. She tells him this isn’t personal before pushing him over the balcony. Jack continues up the stairs while Detective Vine learns there has been an incident at the Riverside Plaza. She is surprised to find Jack waiting on her and immediately points her gun at him. She admits she is surprised he even remembers this place. She tells the girl to stay there before patting Jack down. They talk about grief and Jack says it was always the anger with him.

He follows Catherine who stops and uses the phone. She continues as Micheal ignores her call. Jack approaches her, grabs her hand, and tells her to come with him. Catherine tells Jack it’ll be over for her soon. They stop before Jack puts several bullets into Catherine. Michael calls Angela and tells her that time is running out. He asks her what it is going to be.

Tin Star Review

This wasn’t the worst episode of Tin Star but it sure doesn’t feel like the episode before the last episode ever. I can’t be the only one who felt nothing when Catherine was killed. It should’ve been triumphant or depressing but I was numb to the whole ordeal. It didn’t hit home at all.

Now, we have one episode left and I am worried that we’re going to be disappointed in the end. I am not sure what could happen that might satisfy all of us or even some of us. It makes me wonder if this season was even necessary. I really don’t think it was and wish they would’ve ended it last season.

At the very least, I enjoyed the Nickel family from the 2nd season. Those characters were dynamic but we’re not getting any of that this season. I like Ian Hart and the Michael Ryan character but the story is totally disappointing. This episode scores a 6 out of 10. Previous recaps of Tin Star are available on Reel Mockery.

    Why kill Helen

  2. Connie says:

I just rewatched the scene where Jack smothers Helen. At the beginning of that scene, you are facing Jack and he is saying “No” and shaking his head–then the camera goes to Helen, and she says, “Please..” She wanted Jack to end her life and at first he refuses, but then grants her request.
