The Sounds Episode 6 Recap

At the beginning of the episode, Maggie Cabbott (Rachelle Lefevre) tells Tom (Matt Whelan) that they only need to stick with the plan and their first meet-up is in four weeks. They go over their strategy which they’ve planned within an inch of their lives. Maggie reminds him that they don’t have to do this and could easily go sailing around New Zealand before going home. She says the money doesn’t matter. Tom says he wants it and he knows there is no going back. They head back into the woods and Maggie realizes her husband is hurt. He tells her about being trapped by the water tower and she believes the wound is serious. They chat about Ru’s daughter and the fact that Pelous wasn’t the perfect town after all. Maggie wants to know who treated Tom’s arm. He says it was an ex-con hermit who won’t be a problem.

Tom is done being in the bush so he wants to change their plan immediately but Maggie reminds him that they spent three years putting together this plan. She says they need to stick to the plan like glue to avoid going to prison. In a flashback, Maggie meets with Tom at a pub and finds out that he wanted to drink but didn’t. He tells her about the guy blindsiding him before we hear Frank (John Bach) talk about gross revenue rising at more than 10% per annum. Tom and Nate (Josh McKenzie) listen to their father talk about building the company and his father nearly destroying it.

Frank goes on to talk about picking the next CEO of the company and admits it will be difficult. Frank gives the position to Nate and says it is up to Nate to see if he can find a role for Tom. Nate is confident he will be able to find a job for his brother but Tom quickly storms out of the room. Maggie learns about everything and says they need to get away from these people for good. She says they should get out of Canada and that they’ll be able to be a family on their own. She also suggests trying another adoption but Tom isn’t sure his father will let him walk away from the company. A man listens nearby as Tom says he doesn’t want to be poor but Maggie suggests there are worse things to worry about. That man, Monty Roberts (Peter Feeney), approaches and introduces himself.

He explains that he works for Frank and protects his assets. He has a proposal he would like Tom to hear. They sit at a nearby table and Monty explains that he can siphon off $60 million and bury it in a cavern of trusts and shell companies so no one except for Tom will be able to find it. Tom can burn out or disappear before turning up a few years later and getting the money where Monty tells him it is located. He is confident nobody will ever be able to connect them to the money. Maggie is worried about the consequences but Monty twists the knife by explaining that choosing Nate wasn’t a recent decision that they had been meeting without Tom for a couple of years now. Monty admits he won’t get away with it but he has cancer will be dying anyway.

We return the present and Maggie asks if Monty was a setup all along. She asks if Tom has arranged for Monty to be there at the bar. Tom denies it and says he had nothing to do with it. Before long, Maggie sets up a meeting with Monty and asks him how they would carry out the plan to steal money from Frank. He tells her to open a business far away and he will give her the key to the money. Then, she can sell the business to a shell company she owns and launder her way to happiness. Maggie decides to increase the stakes and asks for $160 million instead of $60. She wants to go into the protest business. Monty says he is going to give her a name and address before suggesting she keep it to herself and not tell Tom.

The Sounds Review

Well, this was a completely different episode of The Sounds. I am really surprised that they decided to lay everything out on the table this early into the season. It feels like all of the show’s secrets have been revealed now and I am not sure how it’ll carry on without the element of surprise. I am pretty confident they could’ve achieved this much quicker. This could’ve been covered in half of an episode so we could have moved on to something else.

I’ll say that the revelation makes sense though. It is much easier to understand why Tom did what he did now. While still difficult to believe, I guess this is a little more believable than what the writers could’ve fed us. I am a bit befuddled as to where this will go now. I suppose Maggie will return to town and team up with Jack and Esther to bring Tom to justice.

Who knows? Since there are only two episodes left, I might as well stick around and find out what happens though. This episode was okay but I wish they would’ve covered it a bit quicker and moved on to something else. The episode scores a 7 out of 10. Previous recaps of The Sounds are available on Reel Mockery.
