The Sister Finale Recap

As the episode begins, Holly (Amrita Acharia) tells Nathan (Russell Tovey) about her emotional issues before he gives her an injection in the stomach. We jump back to the present and Bob (Bertie Carvel) begins explaining himself. He says he was sure that if Elise died in that place under those circumstances it would lead to a haunting. He admits to nudging things along by giving her cyanide which had been carrying around for years in case he needed to use it for himself. Nathan can’t seem to understand Bob’s actions and the fact that Bob blamed him. Bob defends himself by saying death isn’t real and it is only a transition from one state to another but he admits he was never able to test his theory. Bob admits he didn’t really understand what he had gotten them into.

Bob claims something stopped her from crossing over and that Elise is always with him. He believes it had something to do with Nathan getting involved with Elise’s sister. Bob suggests she wants to put it right but Nathan isn’t sure that they can ever make things right. Then, Bob says they need to admit what they’ve done but Nathan says that is never going to happen. He is adamant that Holly can’t find out before Bob accuses him of taking advantage of Holly’s losses. Nathan blames Bob for everything but Bob says they’re in it together and need to return Elise to her family so they can bury her. He says Nathan needs to let both of them go. Bob says something needs to happen because he’ll go mad if it continues one more day.

Nathan leaves and meets with Jacki (Nina Toussaint-White) a short time later. They go inside and Nathan quickly admits that he lied about Bob picking him up on the way home. He explains that Bob was actually heading back to the party after he stopped in town to score some cocaine. Nathan admits he had a lot of coke on him and that is why he lied about it. Jacki knows about Bob showing up at his place unexpectedly because of her conversations with Holly. Nathan says Bob wanted a drink at first and he was desperate to get rid of him so he agreed to meet him. Then, Bob started talking about the girl who disappeared before asking Nathan if he dreamed about her. Nathan says he believes Bob is obsessed with her or something.

Then, Nathan asks about the person who says they saw Elise (Simone Ashley) on the night of the party and he learns it was her ex-boyfriend. The ex claimed that Elise woke him up by banging on his window, crying, and demanding to be let inside. By the time he got up, she was already gone. Jacki doesn’t believe the ex-boyfriend got it wrong but she didn’t think he saw what he thought he did. He suggests it might’ve been another girl. After that, Bob sits in his car and thinks about his relationship with Holly. He returns home and apologizes to her.

They agree to share one more drink before going to the police. Meanwhile, Holly drinks at home alone. Nathan tells Bob that he realizes he was supposed to take cyanide and die too. Bob doesn’t deny it before asking Nathan if he is ready. He is told that it’ll get harder the longer they wait. Bob gets up and goes for his coat. He seems out of it and crashes to the ground when he turns around. Nathan gets up and begins putting on plastic gloves before approaching Bob. Nathan grabs a few more pills. He needs to get rid of Elise’s dress because it has his DNA all over it. Nathan begins searching Bob for the key but he can’t find it. While Nathan tries to get the safe open, Bob grabs his phone from his pocket and dials 999. Nathan spots the keys hanging in the door before noticing that Bob has called 999. Nathan picks up the phone and tells the operator that he needs an ambulance. After that, he calls Jacki and tells her that he is with Bob and he has taken an overdose.

Nathan grabs the keys and works quickly to open the safe. He finds a little box inside and immediately opens it. Elise’s dress is nowhere to be found though. Then, he remembers Bob saying there was no ice so Nathan checks the freezer and finds the dress frozen in there. He works to deal with it before authorities arrive. Bob begins breathing so Nathan tries to smother him to death. Bob seems to be dead and Nathan goes back to getting the dress while the rescue crew bangs on the door. Nathan covers his tracks and pretends to be performing CPR when the ambulance crew enters. While they work on Bob, Nathan walks over and shuts the freezer door. He removes the gloves and puts them in his pocket. Later, he is interviewed by a police officer.

Nathan tells her that he thought Bob was just drunk and rambling when he got there before telling her about the big safe. He tells her to look inside of it. Jack checks the safe, looks in the box, and finds a skull inside. She steps back, collects herself, and calls Holly to tell her about the discovery. Holly drops her phone in shock. Next, Nathan looks at Elise’s dress and cries in his car. Holly grabs a picture of herself and Nathan before slamming it to the ground. Nathan returns home and Holly tells him about the discovery. After that, Holly asks Nathan about being at the party that night and not telling her about it. He claims there never seemed to be a good time before she accuses him of knowing it was Bob all along. He admits he started to wonder if Bob was involved. Holly doesn’t understand because Nathan was with Bob that night. She gets upset and says he should’ve told her. She says she is going to move back in with her parents and she wants Nathan to stay away from her. She leaves and Nathan starts sobbing. After a break, Jacki visits Nathan at his home. She wants to ask him a few questions about the previous night. She says there is the 999 call that was made from Bob’s phone.

Nathan says Bob was rambling and then sort of collapsed so he grabbed Bob’s phone and called for help. Jacki asks Nathan how he has been sleeping since Holly says he has been having trouble. Nathan admits he has been stressed and hasn’t spoken to a daughter. Jacki asks Nathan if the doctor gave him Temazepam since that is what Morrow used to kill himself. She wants to know if Nathan still has his pills left but he says he flushed them because he didn’t like taking them. She tells him that it would be a good idea to unofficially source from Temazepam in case someone asks questions about the missing pills. She isn’t sure anyone will ask since Bob has a history of drug abuse and suicide attempts.

Then, she reveals that Bob isn’t actually dead and Nathan pretends that is good news. Bob is in a coma but likely won’t wake up. Jacki tells Nathan to give Holly a few days and she’ll be fine but Nathan isn’t sure about that. Jacki says she’ll make sure Holly knows what Nathan did for her. He asks her what she means but Jacki doesn’t say. After that, Nathan goes to the hospital to visit Bob who opens his eyes and gives him a scare. The doctor enters and says it happens sometimes because of brain activity. Nathan leaves in a hurry. He meets with Holly and asks her how she has been.

She says she is getting there and Nathan says the same. They chat about the gym opening on the corner and Nathan says he is thinking about going to it. Holly wants to know why Nathan didn’t tell her so he says he thought it would be the end of their relationship. They share a laugh and Nathan says Holly always made her laugh. Then, she wants to tell him something else that will make him laugh. We find out that Holly is pregnant. We jump forward and see Nathan arrive at the maternity ward and Holly has given birth to her baby. She tells him that she’ll be home tomorrow because the baby is a bit light but everything is fine.

Nathan drives home alone and we see Elise in the back of his vehicle. Her eyes open and the episode ends.

The Sister Review

Overall, I enjoyed each episode of The Sister but felt the finale could’ve been much better. I liked everything that happened up until the point that Bob opened his eyes. After that, it got a little too easy for Nathan. I am not sure why they decided to throw in the pregnancy stuff since it didn’t seem to be a big subject earlier in the season.

I don’t know. I think it would’ve been better if Nathan would’ve been punished as well. At the very least, the episode should’ve ended when Bob opened his eyes. That would’ve made more sense than throwing Elise into the back of Nathan’s vehicle. I think it just dragged on a bit too long and the writers weren’t sure where to go with it. The Sister was never a love story but they tried to make it a romance in the end and I am not sure why.

Still, the series was decent. With little else going on, The Sister is worth checking out. It is only 4 episodes and it has some creepy moments. The finale scores a 6.5 out of 10. Check out previous recaps of The Sister on Reel Mockery!
