As the episode begins, Nathan (Russell Tovey) and Holly Fox (Amrita Acharia) have their wedding. During the event, Holly stands up and gives a speech about her sister Elise (Simone Ashley) and her desire to marry George Michael. She says her sister didn’t want to marry a boy but wanted the experience of walking down the aisle with her father Graham (Paul Bazely). Holly is confident that her sister wouldn’t miss her wedding and that she would approve of Nathan. She asks everyone to stand and toast her beautiful sister. Once that ends, Nathan escapes to the bathroom where he can cry. When using the computer at night, Holly hears something nearby.

She gets up and begins investigating the noise. After that, Bob (Bertie Carvel) takes Nathan to his lock-up. Nathan unlocks it before Bob drives the car inside. They pop the truck. Bob believes it is best to hold onto the evidence until they can find out how to get rid of it but Nathan thinks they should burn the clothes. He takes the clothes from the bag and tosses them into a small trash bin. Then, he suggests dissolving them with acid but nobody has acid. Bob says nobody is going to find her because nobody is looking for her. He wants to put her in the freezer but Nathan doesn’t like that idea. Nathan’s phone rings and it is Holly calling. He answers and finds out that Graham and Jacki (Nina Toussaint-White) won. As for Nathan, he confirms he is still with Bob.

Holly reveals she got scared because it sounded like someone was moving through the house. She changes the subject and tries to find out more about Nathan’s evening. He promises he is okay and will be home soon before the call ends. When the call ends, Bob criticizes Nathan’s choice of words and gives him a few pointers. Nathan says he can’t lie to Holly and that they trust each other but Bob doesn’t seem to believe that. Nathan wants to make sure that Holly never finds out about this. Nathan gets upset, says he didn’t kill Elise and begins banging on Bob’s vehicle. Then, Bob tries to figure out what Nathan should tell his wife so they don’t get caught. Nathan returns home and finds Holly drinking.

She begins asking him questions right away but Nathan tries to deflect her questions. He lies and says Bob wanted to borrow 10,000 pounds from them so he could pay off a payday loan. Holly suggests sending Bob to Citizens’ Advice. Then, he says tonight will be the end of it. Holly can’t wrap her head around Bob asking them for money. Nathan says Bob seemed desperate and that is why he stayed with him a bit longer. Nathan isn’t sure what he’ll do about it but says he is going off to bed right now. Meanwhile, Jacki continues watching the interviews conducted during the investigation into Elise’s disappearance. She finds it interesting when Bob learns that Elise was seen by someone. Later that night, Nathan hears creaking downstairs.

He believes he hears Elise telling him Happy New Year. Then, he remembers introducing Elise to Bob and stopping for drugs. We jump back to 2010 and see Bob leaving Elise and Nathan alone in the vehicle. Elise takes drugs and passes the CD case to Nathan but she asks him to kiss her first. He does while Bob continues walking alone. Things heat up between Nathan and Elise. They almost have sex but Elise goes nuts and begins slamming Nathan back and forth. She bashes her head against the window and passes out. Nathan checks on her and finds that she is unconscious. Bob returns and finds out what has happened. He asks Nathan what he did before pulling Elise out of his vehicle. Nathan tries to call for help but can’t get a signal while Bob tries performing CPR.

When Bob gives up, Nathan tries CPR but it is too late. Nathan freaks out and runs away but stops and turns around. He returns to Bob and suggests the drugs killed Elise but Bob reminds him that her skull has been caved in. Nathan denies hitting Elise. Bob doesn’t seem to believe him. He urges Nathan to be calm because he doesn’t want to go to prison. Nathan tries to remember if anyone saw him with Elise. Nathan believes it is in their best interest to buy Elise before her phone starts ringing. Nathan picks it up before Bob tells him to let it ring. Nathan puts the phone back and they work together to bury the body.

When they leave, Bob makes sure Nathan knows what to do and tells him that they won’t be able to see one another again. After that, we jump back to the present and Nathan remembers what Bob said about people not looking for Elise. He calls Bob moments later and tells him they need to meet. He says there was a lock on the freezer and Bob bought the padlock. Bob has a plan and has thought it through so Nathan wants to know what the plan is. When Nathan refuses to meet Bob at his place, they agree to meet at the pub later that evening. While Bob is waiting at the pub, Nathan breaks into Bob’s place and tries to get into the freezer. Nathan breaks the lock and looks inside but finds nothing. Then, he sees the safe nearby.

He calls Bob and makes an excuse about getting caught up at work. During this time, Jacki continues digging into the evidence. Nathan leaves the freezer open before driving toward the pub. Jacki searches for Bob Morrow online and finds out where he has been living. She drives toward Bob’s place before Nathan sneaks into Bob’s house. Nathan finds a projector and watches a video of Bob trying to talk to Elise’s spirit. Nathan hears something in the house and tries to escape but freezes when he sees Jacki approaching the house from outside. Nathan hides from Jacki as she looks through the windows. When Jacki finds nothing, she returns to her vehicle and Nathan waits for her to leave. As for Bob, he gets tired of waiting.

Nathan gets a call from Bob as he tries to escape his house. This time, he blames the delay on car problems. Bob tells him that he knows where he lives and he’ll be back there in five minutes. Nathan looks through the window and notices that Jacki is still waiting in her car. He tries to open the window before Jacki looks over and spots him but she questions it. Nathan pleads with her to go away. Bob leaves the pub. Nathan calls Jacki and asks her to meet him somewhere so they can talk about Holly. Then, he says it is about Elise. He admits he told a lie as Bob gets closer. Nathan watches Jacki through the window until she gets out and approaches Bob. She introduces herself and tells Bob that they met a long time ago but Bob pretends not to remember.

Bob doesn’t want to give her five minutes so she asks him to call her. Nathan watches as their conversation ends but Jacki isn’t giving up. She checks out Bob’s car and asks him about the one he had before and who he sold it to. She says there is no record of the car being sold. Jacki tells Bob she’ll call him before she finally decides to leave. Nathan struggles to get the window open as Bob steps inside. Bob catches Nathan before he can climb out of the window and offers him something to drink. Bob knows that Nathan went to the lock-up. He says the problem is that Nathan won’t accept what is happening. Then, he claims that Elise is there watching them. When Nathan says he wants it to stop, Bob claims he knows how to do it.

Bob goes on about hauntings and roadside ghosts. After what happened, he used to scan the papers to see if there were any reported sightings of Elise. He also drove down the lane several times a week but he never saw her. Bob says he thought he had done something wrong since all of the elements for a ghost were there. He couldn’t pass up an opportunity to prove that ghosts are real by making a ghost. He thought it would lead to a haunting if Elise died in that place under those circumstances. Nathan asks Bob if he has any idea what he has done to them before the episode ends.

 

The Sister Review

I’ve enjoyed The Sister. It isn’t perfect and the flaws aren’t difficult to find. It is a shame that much of the episode took place with Nathan peeking out of the window and Bob waiting for him at the pub. It was a bit intense there at first but dull after that. I’ll also say it looked like Russell Tovey was smirking at the end of the episode when he found out that Bob had planned everything from the beginning. Flaws here and flaws there.

Still, I think The Sister is at least watchable. It feels a little like The Deceived but it is unique and intriguing. Despite it all, I am eager to see what is going to happen in the end. I am not sure The Sister is as bad as some make it out to be but it isn’t anywhere near perfect either. I guess people will either love it or absolutely hate it.

I don’t mind it. I like the back and forth between Carvel and Tovey. I am interested in seeing how far things will go and what will actually happen in the end. The episode was decent so it scores a 6.5 out of 10. Previous recaps of The Sister can be found on Reel Mockery.
