The Lovers Series 1 Episode 4 Recap

As the fourth episode of The Lovers begins, Janet (Roisin Gallagher) sends Seamus (Johnny Flynn) a message letting him know she’ll be there in a few minutes. Seamus worries they’ll get recognized because the restaurant is busier than usual. Janet reminds him he isn’t famous and they’re pretend family anyway. When the waitress (Mukamajule Michelo) checks on Seamus, he says he is waiting for his cousin. As Janet gets closer, she sends another message saying she wants to be bad tonight. Seamus isn’t good at sexting so Janet asks what he wants to do to her tonight.

Janet finally makes it to the restaurant. She reminds him that there should be no public shows of affection so they only shake hands. Once they sit down, Janet asks why he wants to eat her pudding since he said that in his message. Seamus tells her what he really meant before blaming the phone’s autocorrect feature. He reveals that his interview with Nisha had great engagement across all platforms, but he’d prefer to talk about her today. They talk about her favorite movie, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Janet believes her life is boring compared to Seamus’s.

He makes a joke about the IRA that doesn’t fly well with the guests so he asks for the bill. As they leave, they talk about Ian Paisley. When they start talking about Seamus’s fame, he suggests she has already Googled him by now. Janet claims she has better things to do with her time. Seamus goes into a store where Charlie (David Ireland) and Maggie (Abigail McGibbon) are arguing. He asks for condoms. Before long, Charlie tells Maggie that Seamus is a friend of Janet. After Maggie gives them to him for free, she warns him not to screw around with Janet. Outside, Janet admits to knowing Charlie and Maggie.

Seamus mentions what Charlie said about being in love and spelling it “luv”. Janet claims not to know what that means. Seamus is surprised to learn that Janet and Maggie go to church together. He can’t believe Janet is Christian. She ends up cursing but blames it on arguing with an atheist dick head. Janet lets it slip that she Googled him after all. She tells him that she has spoken to God and he has spoken to her. Seamus questions if she is willing to commit adultery. Janet reminds him he isn’t married so it isn’t adultery. She admits that she asked God to give her a sign before he appeared.

The Lovers Review

The fourth episode of The Lovers was better than the third thanks to an effective ending. It seems to be getting back on track so the next two episodes will hopefully improve. The first two episodes were the best so far though. Regardless, The Lovers has been refreshing even if the series is a little cliché and silly at times.

When the series is at its best, it is very good and even deeply emotional. Truthfully, this probably didn’t need to be six episodes. At four episodes, it would’ve been able to skip some of these unnecessary scenes. Regardless, the series has been enjoyable so I am eager to see how things play out for Seamus and Janet. This episode scores a 6 out of 10. Recaps of The Lovers are available on Reel Mockery here.
