The Lazarus Project Series 2 Episode 3 Recap

s02e03 the lazarus project dennis rebrov

As this episode of The Lazarus Project begins, Bryson (Royce Pierreson) introduces himself to Janet (Vinette Robinson). He explains he is going to be her handler on her mission to 2012. Janet believes the mission is going to kill them although Bryson says it has been tested. Bryson argues that they’ll need to be a team. Janet says they’ll have to undo the mess that his lot created. Janet threatens to kill him if he uses the threat of violence against her daughter. Bryson hopes it doesn’t come to that. Robin Lerner (Colin Salmon) that he will do him proud just before they go back in time. Robin informs Janet that she should arrive right after Becky. Before long, Janet and Bryson are at the Time Break Facility in 2012.

Janet is relieved to see Becky. Bryson snaps a picture of them. In 2024, Bryson tells George Addo (Paapa Essiedu) that he knows him while holding him at gunpoint. Becky shoots at Bryson several times to scare him away before fleeing with George. Later, they sit together and talk about the time Becky was taken. Becky (Safia Oakley-Green) tells him how she was taken and eventually met back up with Bryson and Janet. Janet was working with Dr. Gray so they had a flat on campus near the lab. Everything was good until Bryson woke her up one night and she could hear gunshots. Becky got separated from Bryson and found her mom arguing with some guy. Janet was asking Ross not to hurt her. Becky blacked out and woke up in the hospital.

She was put in a care home and spent time with foster parents. Her 18th birthday is in two days. Then, she will receive a note with details of a lockbox at the university. Inside, she will find a gun and a note saying she needs to be on the train to save George’s life. Becky believes he’ll go back to 2012 to save them and put the stuff in the lockbox so she can help him. She begins telling him about a causal loop. George wants to take her to the Lazarus HQ, but Becky says her mom told her to never trust anyone from The Lazarus Project. Becky doesn’t want to go there and she doesn’t care about seeing her dad either. In Switzerland, Dr. Samson (Sam Troughton) calls Wes (Caroline Quentin) to say he knows where the serum is. She asks him to go to the Time Break facility to see if there is any useful equipment there.

Archie (Anjli Mohindra) tells Zhang Rhui (Elaine Tan) that was a good kiss. They kiss and go to bed together. Wes calls Archie to tell her that Dr. Samson believes the serum could be in a private lab in Sydney. Wes calls Zhang and finds out they’re together. After the call, Archie tells Zhang they have to go. George goes home with Becky. She wants to come with him, but George refuses and leaves her behind. Samson checks out the facility with Greta. In Sydney, Archie tells Zhang this isn’t the first time she has had a workplace complication or relationship. Zhang approaches Dr. Feng and uses a stun gun on him. They tie him up and cut off his hand. In the car, Archie tells Zhang that Ross was her last complication. She was leaving her boyfriend and Ross was leaving his wife.

Archie insists it was real. A flashback shows that Ross was killed in an explosion, but Archie tells Zhang they completed the mission and he didn’t make it. They make their way into the lab while using a Taser to knock people out along the way. Archie says there was a loop. She died and Ross brought her back. Zhang asks if Ross would want her to stay alone forever. The man’s arm doesn’t work because they’ve upgraded to a retinal scanner. Instead, they try to shoot to break the glass. When it doesn’t break, they agree to try again during the next loop. Samson doesn’t have any luck and he doesn’t know how to fix it. Greta believes they have infinite time to figure it out. Samson says otherwise because the forces allowing them to jump back in time will eventually snap. Then, their universe will cease to exist.

George meets Sarah (Charly Clive) so he can tell her about Becky and Bryson. He explains that Bryson is terrified of him even though he hasn’t done anything to him. George apologizes for what he said in the last loop. He explains that he just misses her. As for Sarah, she admits he doesn’t feel anything before she is shot and killed. Bryson shoots George. Then, he jumps on top of him and screams. Time jumps back again. When Becky approaches George, she learns that Bryson strangled him to death. George questions what he did before complaining about time travel. Zhang and Archie have sex before going to steal the serum. They get inside the facility and get the serum this time. At headquarters, Samson argues there isn’t much he can do without a working machine.

He warns Wes they’re losing time because they jumped back eight seconds before they should have. They need to find a way out of this soon or their universe is going to fall apart. Wes says they’ll have to work harder. She wants to speak to George and Sarah about what the heck happened. Dennis Rebrov (Tom Burke) puts a knife to Zhang’s neck because he knows what she did. Archie threatens to kill him if he does anything to Zhang. George shouts at Rebrov to tell him his daughter isn’t dead. Rebrov asks why George didn’t tell him. George explains that Becky doesn’t want to see him. Becky remembers being sent back and never seeing Janet again. Wes wants to be taken to her, but Rebrov says no one can speak to her until he does.

George tells Becky about her father. He pleads with Becky to speak to Rebrov who enters the room. She tells him that she got left behind. Becky says her mom didn’t make it. George believes they can still save her because Samson will find a way to fix the machine. Becky shows Rebrov the picture of the flat from the university. He finds a saying at the bottom that he believes is a code. They go to the office and find a hidden compartment. Rebrov finds an instruction manual and says they have to go to Lazarus right now. Samson says it is a time machine so he calls it a silver bullet. Wes tells them to get building. Samson says they can use the Lazarus jet to get the velocity they need.

Samson thinks he can get them about a month before the second singularity is created. If they can build a machine to go past the checkpoint in 2023, they can stop the creation of the loop. Rebrov tells Becky that he is working with the Lazarus Project because he has no other choice. She wants to come with him, but Dennis argues it is too dangerous. Nearby, Archie talks about how difficult it was for Becky to grow up alone. George says he lied before explaining that they weren’t separated and Janet was murdered. Becky saw her with a man named Ross before she was killed. George believes Ross was sent to kill a scientist called Dr. Gray. He thinks Wes might be behind it. Wes talks to someone who looks like Ross. George asks Shiv if he’ll forget that he forgave him once they fix things.

Shiv denies forgiving him. He asks George not to shoot him if he sees him in 2023. Shiv asks George to find Janet and bring her home. Then, George and the others prepare to go back using the plane. They begin worrying that they’ll actually die.

The Lazarus Project Review

After the third episode of Lazarus Project’s second series, it really feels like the story is going nowhere. The character list is quickly growing, but none of the characters are developing. As a result, it is hard to care about any of them. The series doesn’t have any emotional impact so it often feels lifeless and dull. In fact, dull is a good way to describe everything about this season.

The story is so convoluted that it never seems like any of the characters are any in real danger. I question whether this should’ve been renewed for a second series because the first wasn’t anything to brag about. The second series is weaker through three episodes and I doubt that is going to change as the series tediously reaches its conclusion.

The episode scores a 4 out of 10. Recaps of The Lazarus Project can be found on Reel Mockery here. Find out how to support our independent site at this link. Learn more about advertising on Reel Mockery here. Discuss The Lazarus Project with friends at the Reel Mockery Forum.
