The Killing Kind Series 1 Episode 5 Recap

The episode opens with an injured John Webster (Colin Morgan) trying to convince Ingrid Lewis (Emma Appleton) to not call an ambulance. Reluctantly agreeing, she calls a doctor to request assistance. Later, John is shown recovering in his flat while Ingrid ruminates in the kitchen. He questions how she got a house call so late. She claims it was a favor. He asks if the familiar concerned look on her face is real. She says yes but reminds him that it stems from when she was in a bad place with Mark Orpen (Elliot Barnes-Worrell). He accuses her of lying before suggesting she stay to work on the laptop. When she wakes to find Webster asleep, she searches his office to find a copy of Emma Seaton’s (Bethany Muir) Incident Report.

The next morning, Ingrid asks Webster about Emma’s pregnancy. He confesses to knowing but denies being the father. He claims to have cared enough about her which is why he looked into her death. She threatens to report him to the authorities before storming off. Outside, she calls Angus Grey (Nicholas Rowe) to ask for advice. He reminds her of their last visit when she accused him of covering up Belinda Grey’s (Nicholas Rowe) death. She assures him that the truth is what she is after. DI Jill Winstanley (Sophie Stanton) announces that Ingrid is being arrested on burglary charges.

Nash The Killing Kind Paramount+

DS Luke Nash (Kerr Logan) says a witness claims to have seen Ingrid and Webster breaking into the West Gate Hotel last night. Against her lawyer’s advice, Ingrid validates the allegation but claims to have been investigating Belinda Grey (Sara Powell) and Judge Peter Stuart’s (Richard Dixon) murders. She claims to have withheld intel from the authorities because they wouldn’t take her seriously. Winstanley reminds her that she recently requested they look into Webster. Ingrid says Webster is the only other person taking the case seriously. She asks if Nash told her about Nevins’ family involvement. Nash tells her that there is no evidence to link the family to the incident. She suggests the laptop holds the answers.

Nash informs Ingrid that she is being released. Ingrid tells him that Emma was pregnant. He says Emma had a miscarriage before committing suicide. Angus threatens to have her arrested again if she goes anywhere near the case. She thanks him for coming. He admits to feeling it necessary to be there since he is a member of the Chamber.

Suzanne (Olivia D’Lima) tells Ingrid that the father of Emma’s baby has the strongest motive to want her dead. Ingrid points out that Belinda is not associated with the case in any way. She admits to feeling back about the way she treated Angus. Suzanne assures her that Angus felt she was never good enough. She reminds Ingrid that she humiliated Emma in court. Ingrid decides to visit the pier in the file.

At the pier, Ingrid discovers a memorial for Emma when a man approaches to ask if she knew her. She says only vaguely before leaving. A short distance away, she recognizes the man from the previous night before running. At knifepoint, he identifies himself as Emma’s brother, Jake Seaton (Charles Furness).  He forces her to climb the bench attached to the pier wall when she spots Nash quickly approaching. Nash apprehends him.

After speaking with Winstanley, Nash tells Ingrid that he is taking her home. She demands to know why he was at the pier. He claims to have been trailing Jake. She tells him that she wanted to see where Emma took her own life. She questions why he said “please” when speaking to Jake during the arrest. He says they met during Webster’s trial. She recalls Nash rushing into the restroom to stop Emma from stabbing her with a broken glass. He assures her that his being Emma’s baby’s father doesn’t make him guilty.

Hill Park Hotel – Ingrid has a series of flashbacks. Later, she meets Winstanley at a local pub. Winstanley informs her that Nash confessed to his relationship with Emma. She says he has been suspended. Winstanley tells her that Jake’s DNA was found at the hotel where they were attacked. She says they haven’t been able to connect him to Peter and Belinda’s murders. Ingrid suggests the court failed the killer who may be a Nevis, Jake, or Nash.

Ingrid tells Webster that Nash is the father of Emma’s baby. She suspects they may be in danger while Jake is in custody because he may have an accomplice. He asks if she is warning him or needs his help. When she doesn’t respond, he swears to stay out of it from here on out.

Upon returning to her hotel room, Ingrid finds Nash waiting for her. She demands to know how he found out where she is staying. Ignoring the question, he says his relationship with Emma began during the trial. He says while Emma tried to forget Webster, she couldn’t do it. He contributes to her miscarriage to the immense stress she was under. He accuses her of representing Webster while she knew he was guilty. She denies the allegation. He says Webster going to prison wouldn’t have been justice but it would have forced him to suffer. Emma asks if helping Jake was about justice. He denies any connection to what happened to Peter and Belinda. Nash points out that the person threatening Oliver Gough (Finnbar Hayman) had an email address with the word, “durbs.” He claims it was Emma’s nickname for Jake. He warns that whoever got Jake involved is extremely dangerous. She accuses him of protecting Jake. Nash tells her that he owes it to Emma to protect Jake. He convinces her to not tell Winstanley about his visit before leaving.

Ingrid tells Mark that she is sorry for not confessing sooner about her and Webster’s relationship. He says it was wrong of her but still wants to help.

Royal Handley University – Janet (Gina Gangar) informs Mark and Ingrid that the student involved in a physical dispute with Oliver Gough declined to file a police report. She says a Bodle House Chambers’ attorney, Ingrid Lewis picked up the file for an impending appeal. Ingrid thanks her before rushing to the restroom. Returning to the car, she finds Mark injured and the driver-side window bust. She rides with Mark in the back of the ambulance.

Mark The Killing Kind Paramount+

Anne Orpen (Jacquetta May) questions why anyone would want to hurt Mark. Ingrid receives a call from Webster. In the parking garage, Webster shows Ingrid how Jake utilized Tor to access her old phone and laptop. They suspect that’s how he was tracking Ingrid’s movements. Webster claims the work to be far beyond Jake’s capabilities, but suspects Nash has both the means and motive. He also shares an encrypted conversation with someone named “Wolf17,” but doesn’t know who it is. While reviewing the surveillance footage from the night Belinda was murdered, Ingrid notices a lone figure looming in the background taking photos. Upon closer inspection, she realizes it’s Emma Seaton (Bethany Muir). She also remembers Emma’s wolf tattoo from court.
