The Consequences Are Mine

Sierra Leone, West Africa – The episode opens with two boys getting a closer look at a newly posted sign. The boy says, “Gold.”

An undercover cop on an electric pole reports that Brian Reader (James Nelson-Joyce) arrives at Kenneth “Kenny” Noye’s (Jack Lowden) home. Reader is nabbed after leaving Noye’s.

DCI Brian Boyce (Hugh Bonneville) believes the gold is in Kenny’s possession and Reader is moving it. DCI John Fordham (Hadley Fraser) is given a tracking device to install on Reader’s vehicle.

Marnie Palmer (Stefanie Martini) informs John Palmer (Tom Cullen) of a trip she booked for them to Tenerife in two weeks. He tells her that it isn’t done yet. She warns that he’s going to kill himself when his daughter (Robyn Betterridge) approaches. He’s short with her when she asks him to read a document to her.

DC Nicki Jennings (Charlotte Spencer) and Tony Brightwell (Emun Elliott) inform Boyce that Kenny’s property deed has been protected under the Official Secrets Act since 1942.

Fordham and another detective are on a stakeout in front of Reader’s home. He jumps out to place the tracking device on Reader’s vehicle.

Boyce informs the detectives of three underground bunkers on Kenny’s 20-acre property. The France intelligence agency sealed the bunkers but Boyce suggests they’re being utilized to store the Brink’s-Mat gold.

Reader asks Kenny if his phone is working again. Kenny denies it ever went out. Reader assures him that the British Telecom worker was legit. He suggests they switch up their plan.

Fordham tails Kenny and Reader when they make a U-turn. He reports to the command center that they possibly saw him. Boyce suggests they’re heading to Reigate Station. Jennings and Brightwell are ordered to the train station.

Edwyn Cooper (Dominic Cooper) and Gordon Parry (Sean Harris) meet to discuss the redevelopment plan.

Palmer, the owner of multiple jewelry stores, is now under the police’s radar. Archie Osbourne (Daniel Ings) informs Boyce that Palmer’s income increased from €82,000 to €6 million in one quarter. Boyce sends Archer to Bristol to investigate further.

Kenny tells Jeannie Savage (Dorothy Atkinson) that only small amounts will be deposited from here on out. She is to make deposits at five different banks.

Archie visits one of Palmer’s jewelry stores. Palmer claims Constantino Precious in Hatton Garden Metals is his primary source. Archie asks if he ever visited Sierra Leone mine. Palmer tells him that he keeps things simple before offering to sell him a gold chain for his lady.

Jeannie drops a bundle of cash on the ground as she prepares to enter the bank.

Garth Chappell (Robin Laing) tells Palmer that he wants out. Palmer tells him that they’ll stop when there is no more money or gold.

The bank clerk says the total is €190,000. Jeannie argues it is €200,000. The clerk assures her the total is correct before suggesting a bundle was dropped somewhere. She searches her vehicle, no money. She informs Kenny that the missing money was reported to Old Bill to ensure he never thought she stole it. He tells her that he wishes she did steal it. She assures him that the police won’t know it belonged to him.

Archie tells Boyce that Palmer has a document that validates his gold is acquired from Sierra Leone. He says there is nothing that can be done unless they can prove the gold isn’t coming from Sierra Leone. He claims Palmer is illiterate.

AI (Anil Desai) acquires another gold bullion from Palmer. He informs him of his upcoming trip to India but says someone will take his place.

Boyce sends Brightwell to Sierra Leone. Jennings isn’t happy with the news. He offers to refuse the assignment if Boyce doesn’t permit her to go as well but she refuses. When she confronts Boyce, he accuses her of blackmailing a superior to move up the rank. He warns her that Sierra Leone is on the verge of a civil war. She admits it sounds terrifying but demands to accompany Brightwell to Sierra Leone. Relenting, he tells her to avoid drinking the water.

The police have asked Jeannie to come into the station to discuss the missing €10,000. She suggests letting it go. Kenny warns her that ignoring it will only make things worse. He warns that they may not let her leave.

Garth arrives at the bank to complete a €700,000 withdrawal. The representative voices her concern about the €10 million in transactions over a four-month span. Bristol Bank Manager, Sam (Christopher Goh) contacts the head office. He tells her to prepare the money slowly.

An officer asks Jeannie why she was carrying around €10,000. She claims it was for the builders while stuffing the bundle into her bag.

Garth’s €700,000 withdrawal is cleared. It appears as if he hides the money in the ceiling.

Brightwell and Jennings arrive in Sierra Leone at the gold mine where several boys are digging. A Government of Sierra Leone Department of Natural Resources Proclamation of Land Ownership for Constantino Precious Metals is posted on the property. They are chased away by gunfire.

Sienna Rose (Ellora Torchia) informs Edwyn of property for sale in Cote d’Azur in France. They agree to meet later.

Palmer tells Marnie that he can’t go on holiday because of the gold. She assures him that he has a choice before leaving.

DI Neville Carter (Sea Gilder) questions Edwyn about why he hasn’t been to visit in a  while. Edwyn claims to be having problems at home. Carter tells him that he can turn his back on everyone but not the brotherhood if he doesn’t want them to turn their back on him. They shake hands before his departure.

Boyce asks CS Cath McLean (Amanda Drew) and Assistant Commissioner Gordan Stewart (Peter Davison) for 72-hour surveillance in Somerset, Kent, London, and Bristol. He says it will expend his budget before requesting search warrants. He suggests keeping the Kent surveillance from the local police because the suspect may have connections. Stewart says it would mean the detectives would be unarmed. Boyce tells him that the suspect doesn’t have any gun offenses.

Doctor Sidir (Amerjit Deu) tells Isabelle Cooper (Ruth Bradley) and Edwyn that their son has a cold. Edwyn suggests returning home on weekends, so they can attend events together but she declines the offer. She warns him that he won’t get anything but his clothes before a few insults.

Jennings realizes someone is watching her while leaving her father’s place. She approaches the vehicle as the driver pulls away.

A man snaps Kenny and Brenda Noye’s (Nichola Burley) photo as they’re leaving a Freemasonry event. He claims to have left his wallet. After she leaves, he forces the photographer to hand over the film.

Edwyn buries his wedding band in mud near the river.

Brenda admits to not liking Kenny’s interaction with the Masons. He tells her that the Masons are their protection against people who want the gold back. She says their assets are from hard work.

Edwyn and Sienna get intimately involved.

Kenny and Palmer have a phone conversation. They wish each other good luck before ending the call.

Fordham inspects his vehicle before meeting with Boyce and Neil Murphy (Chris Coghill) for an assignment. Boyce says the gold is solid proof, not Reader or Kenny.

Palmer is in his smelter when he finds his daughter’s drawing of the family on holiday.

Boyce compliments Jennings and Brightwell for their detective skills. A surveillance team is stationed outside Reader’s home. A detective alerts Boyce and Harry Carson (Silas Gilder) that he’s on the move. Fordham’s team surrounds Kenny’s house when they’re approached by aggressive dogs. Brenda, Kenny, and Reader are alerted to the barking dogs. A detective calls for an ambulance. Boyce issues an order for the three remaining surveillance teams to move in.

Police officers arrest Garth.

Detectives bust into Palmer’s smelter to find someone else.

Boyce arrives at Kenny’s house. Someone deceased is on a stretcher. Kenny is arrested and taken away as the episode comes to an end.

 

The Gold Review

It seems the author forgot the premise of the Brink’s-Mat robbery. The episode added little to nothing to the real story. Sadly, the amazing cast doesn’t get the opportunity to show their true acting talents. Such a wasted opportunity to say the least. Too many inconsistencies and an oversaturated cast of fictional characters.
