The Devil’s Hour Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

The Half Of Ourselves We Have Lost – As the fifth episode of The Devil’s Hour begins, Gideon (Peter Capaldi) wakes up Connor (David Angland) to tell him he’ll do something if they don’t make him better. Gideon believes they can change him, but he needs Connor to help him. After cutting Connor free, Gideon explains that he’ll kill again if he has to do so. Gideon tells him to get in the chair. After the intro, DCI Thomas Hatby (Patrick Regis) tells DI Ravi Dhillon (Nikesh Patel) that a 17-year-old kid tried to kill himself last night. He confessed this morning so Ravi was right about this being retaliation. It was just one kid it seems. Another dealer is stepping up. When Thomas mentions Aiden Stenner, Ravi recognizes the name from before. Thomas tells him that he doesn’t have to do this, but Ravi believes he does. Ravi goes into Nick’s bedroom where the bodies are still in bed. He collapses to the floor and begins sobbing.

Isaac (Benjamin Chivers) tells Sylvia (Barbara Marten) that he can see the birds even though she says they’re not real. He shouldn’t bother trying to touch them because he can’t. Sylvia tells him not to mind Roger. Although he can’t see them, he keeps her company. While he is holding on, Sylvia confesses that she lost her grip a long time ago. She puts the button in his hand and tells him to squeeze it because it is real. Once he does, Sylvia says there are no more birds. When Lucy (Jessica Raine) comes to get her son, Sylvia admits she doesn’t think Isaac cried when he was born. Lucy reminds her that she is moving somewhere else. As they prepare to leave, Isaac stops so he can wave at Roger. While they wait for Lucy and Isaac, Mike (Phil Dunster) talks to Dr. Ruby Bennett (Meera Syal) about psychotherapy and other things. Mike explains that he didn’t abandon Isaac. Instead, he was kicked out for saying things he didn’t mean.

He might’ve meant it at the time. Mike reveals they’ve been separated for about nine months. Ruby refuses to say whether they ever talk about him during their sessions. Once they arrive, Ruby says she thought they could play a game today. She checks on Isaac who is starting to see things. Lucy learns that Sylvia gave him the button. After Lucy tries to convince him to return it, Isaac gets angry and yells for her to give it back to him. On the way home, Lucy sings to music in her car and nearly runs over Meredith (Talia Walker Bassols) once again. When she stops to tell Debbie (Rhiannon Harper-Rafferty), she is surprised to find that Meredith is actually at home. Lucy apologizes and quickly walks back to her car. Isaac nods confirming he saw her too. Ravi is waiting on them when they get home. Isaac realizes he is sad so he gives him the button he got from Sylvia.

While Isaac jumps on the trampoline, Lucy talks to Ravi about whether this is her fault, but he argues it couldn’t be. She tells him how the man was going to kill Aiden on the night of the storm. She knows it didn’t happen, but it is just as real as any other memory. They discuss her ability to see things as Lucy says she didn’t know she was trading one life for another. Ravi believes it was just chaos. Lucy suggests some people just understand the chaos. Ravi gives her the button and says Isaac gave it to him. She looks at him and sees him with bruises and cuts all over his face. Although they want Ravi to take compassionate leave, he thinks he should continue doing his job. Ravi begins talking about the man who is a murderer and kidnapper. Lucy reveals he thinks he is righteous. Even though she has never met him, she knows him somehow. In the future, we watch as Lucy goes to the prison to visit Gideon Shepherd. She wakes up from the nightmare seconds later.

She grabs her laptop so she can begin researching that name. Lucy finds an article about a 9-year-old Gideon Shepherd stabbing his father to death before vanishing without a trace. She immediately calls Ravi to give him Gideon’s name. His mother died five years ago and he still has a younger brother named Malcolm. Lucy wonders if Ravi can get his address, but Ravi doesn’t think they should harass anyone over a cold case. She didn’t call to ask for permission. Instead, she wanted to see if he would come with her. The next day, they ride out there as Ravi begins having second doubts. Lucy comforts him when he begins grieving for Nick again. In a flash-forward, Lucy smokes outside in what appears to be a wedding dress before Rhia comes out to join her. Rhia (Alexandra D’Sa) tells her to come on because it is time to get married. As they get closer to their destination, Malcolm (Mark Cox) is busy preparing to teach his daughter Kayleigh (Isabella Brownson) how to drive).

Ravi gets out and asks if they can talk in private. In private, Malcolm tells them that his daughter paints. He suspects they’re going to tell him that his brother is dead. When asked if he is still in contact with Gideon, he says not exactly. He hasn’t seen him since he disappeared although he started calling a few years ago. Ravi learns that Malcolm thought his brother had been following and watching them in a red Nissan, but the police wouldn’t do anything. He last heard from his brother on his birthday three weeks ago. In the voice message, Gideon admits he hopes his brother will pick up the phone and talk to him one day. Gideon is glad his brother had a good life. He claims he did it so his brother could live. Malcolm is the first one he saved. At school, Miss Elena Rogers (Rosie Jones) listens to Isaac have a conversation with someone she cannot see. He says they can’t go outside on their own. When Elena asks who he is talking to, Isaac claims it is the man with the glasses.

Mike arrives to pick up his phone. Elena has to check with the office to make sure Lucy called and granted him permission to do so. Once she confirms it, Elena admits that Isaac has been drifting more and having conversations. Mike says he does that before revealing that Lucy’s mom has schizophrenia. Elena suggests Isaac might surprise him when he gets older, but Mike says he might murder him in his sleep. He confesses that was a bad joke before whistling for Isaac to come with him. Ravi lets Lucy listen to the recording one last time. She notices that there is a train close by Gideon when he made the recording. Lucy goes on to say a train only sounds its horn in certain places. Ravi says they’d need a railroad map and a train schedule. Lucy kisses him before quickly apologizing. Ravi insists it is okay and agrees to send her the recording after all. Lucy returns home to find Mike and Isaac watching football together.

Mike tries to figure out where she has been, but Lucy admits she doesn’t want to tell him. After learning that Isaac has already eaten, Lucy begins telling Mike where she went. She tells him how they were working to find Gideon. Mike is worried because the guy is a serial killer, but Lucy is eager for this to end. Lucy explains she just wants everything to be normal again. Mike doesn’t think she is normal and that is why he loves her. When Lucy goes for food, Mike tells Isaac to tell his mom he gave him strawberry ice cream if she asks. Lucy has another nightmare and wakes up at 3:33. She gets out of bed and joins Isaac in his room. Ravi talks to Thomas about Gideon. Thomas agrees to pass it up and mark it as urgent. After Lucy drops Isaac off at school, she gets a call from Ravi who thinks he has found Gideon. Ravi thinks they’re going to have to stop him on their own. After the call ends, Lucy sees a ring on her find that disappears moments later. She has memories of her wedding and being nervous.

When she goes inside to marry Ravi, Nick is shown sitting in the audience. In the present, Ravi goes to the place where he believes Gideon is hiding. He quickly finds Gideon’s vehicle under a tarp. Once he goes inside, he finds pictures of Isaac and the family’s house. He begins hearing people screaming before finding Connor restrained in a chair. He turns off the television and learns that the boy’s name is Connor Lawson. Ravi tries to get him out of there as quickly as possible. He takes Connor to the door and asks him to get as far away from there as possible. Ravi grabs a weapon with the intention of finding Gideon. As Connor runs away from the building, he is shot and killed from behind. Gideon knows where Ravi is hiding. He tells him he wasn’t going to kill Connor because that wasn’t part of the plan. Gideon tries to convince him not to fight because he will not win. He pleads with Dhillon to stay down so he can let him live.

When Ravi refuses to stop, Gideon has to knock him unconscious. Gideon tries to leave in his vehicle, but Lucy slams into his car seconds later. She sees Gideon knocked out in the car so she calls for an ambulance. Later that night, Lucy sits with Isaac at the table and manages to make him smile. Mike arrives with dinner before Lucy kisses him. She receives a call from Ravi who says Gideon is refusing a lawyer and hasn’t said anything despite being there for three days. Gideon has agreed to explain everything although he will only talk to Lucy. Ravi asks how quickly she can eat dinner. Before long, Lucy enters the interview room with Gideon. He wonders if she feels like she has been in this room before because of déjà vu which is like a short circuit in the brain. While they continue talking, Mike throws out the dinner he made. Isaac scares him so Mike curses when asking what he wants. Isaac says nothing before walking away.

Gideon wishes they would’ve listened since he could’ve stopped the chaos, but they’re blaming him now. He thinks that is easier than Ravi blaming himself for what happened after the storm. As Gideon begins talking about Nick, Lucy tries to keep Ravi calm. He insists he isn’t trying to goad him. Gideon yells for them to leave Malcolm alone. He argues they have no idea what they’re talking about when it comes to his father. He claims his father murdered him first. Before the episode ends, Gideon suggests they might want to record this.

The Devil’s Hour Synopsis s01e05

The Devil’s Hour can be a bit confusing at times with many flashbacks and even flashforwards. It is sometimes difficult to keep up with everything since you can never tell when something is happening in the past, future, or present. While not everything is clear yet, the core of the story is pretty simple. Lucy is a social worker struggling to deal with her troubled son, Isaac, but he may not be the only special person in the family.

Lucy’s mother Sylvia, Lucy, and Isaac seem to have a habit of seeing things before they actually happen including murders. Lucy is eventually caught up in a murder investigation linked to a disappearance that happened a long time ago. Soon, she’ll discover that she and her son are being stalked by a mysterious criminal named Gideon Shepherd.

DI Ravi Dhillon is also searching for this individual in relation to a recent murder. Gideon also appears to have the same gift as Lucy and Isaac since he can see future events. Although the finale may change this aspect of the story, I believe Gideon is attempting to maintain the status quo by killing the right people to avoid creating chaos as he has said several times.

If the flashforwards are correct, Lucy and Ravi will eventually get married and Nick may even be alive somehow. Lucy will visit Gideon when both of them are much older. Although other things have happened during the series, these events are arguably the most important to the core of the story.

The Devil’s Hour Review

This episode of The Devil’s Hour finally saw the capture of Gideon who seems ready and willing to talk to Lucy about his father’s murder and other things. The camerawork and cinematography continue shining because both are superb. The lead actors have also provided excellent performances to add more realism to a possibly unrealistic series.

The soundtrack also adds to the overall creepiness of the show. There were parts of the episode that felt like they were written as they went, but it was mostly enjoyable. It was genuinely moody and even creepy when Ravi was searching for Gideon and trying to rescue Connor. With a shorter episode count, this probably could’ve been even better since it wouldn’t have seemed so tedious at points.

Nevertheless, the finale could be the biggest difference maker. An impactful finale could make the series feel worthwhile and maybe even jaw-dropping, but it can’t get too silly or farfetched. The episode scores a 6.5 out of 10. Recaps of The Devil’s Hour can be found on Reel Mockery here. Using ad blockers for a more enjoyable browsing experience? Don’t worry!
