Stonehearst Asylum is a suspenseful drama that debuted on October 24, 2014. When the show opens, it is the early 1800’s and an Oxford University professor is demonstrating to a class of students. Dr. Edward Newgate (Jim Burgess) arrives at Stonehearst to observe care given to the two hundred residents. He is mystified by the old asylum and immediately begins to explore his surroundings. He is met by the intelligent Dr. Silas Lamb (Ben Kingsley), who gives him a tour and tells him that they do not over sedate the patients at Sonehearst, instead they treat them with music, while letting them be their natural selves. Dr. Newgate becomes intrigued with Eliza Graves (Kate Beckinsale), who is a proficient piano player. Instead of the doctors segregating themselves from the patients, they dine with them and attempt to hold intelligent conversations with them, during meals. Eliza becomes upset during dinner, when Newgate is being offended by Bill, who later offers him a drink and an apology. She intervenes, when he begins to sip the drink by kicking him in the leg, which causes him to spill it on his attire. She then escorts him to a private area, where she warns him that he must leave immediately because he does not belong there. Newgate is wandering around the asylum and discovers a hidden dungeon that holds locked cells with lots of prisoners, who happens to be the asylum’s original staff members. Dr. Salt (Michael Caine) requests that they be released, but Newgate says that he will have to speak to Dr. Lamb and ask for his permission first. Salt explains their situation, which started when they were drugged with chlorohydrate. Newgate goes to confront Lamb about his discovery, but changes his mind. Lamb secretly warns Eliza that there secret must remain a secret, but she tells him that spring is soon coming and people will find out what he is doing. Newgate returns to the dungeon bringing the prisoners a few essentials, but they tell him that they are in desperate need of guns. The chief stewart, Mickey Finn (David Thewlis), and Lamb introduce Newgate to Mr. Ogre, who nearly strangles him to death, until he finds out that he is only there to help him. Edward injures his shoulder, during the attack and must seek medical attention from the nursing staff. Eliza intervenes and treats his wounds, while explaining how terrible life was as the asylum, before they locked Dr. Salt and the others up in the prison. She said that they were subjected to unthinkable and barbaric therapies. Newgate overhears Lamb speaking with Finn, about him being a threat to their plans, but Lamb assures him that Newgate will do nothing, without the help of Eliza and that would never happen. Someone escapes from the prison, but Finn finds him, before he could get away and kills him. Silas continues to use bizarre treatments to try to cure the mental patients at Stonehearst. It has not been proven if they are really effective or not. He struggles with his own demons, but no one can figure out what the demons are contributed to. Newgate impresses everyone with his use of psychotherapy in treating a blind woman (Gabrielle Downey) and encourages her to let her imaginary son go and take her nourishments. Lamb summons Newgate and makes him assist in giving one of the patients electrotherapy, which is very brutal, but effective in erasing the man’s delusional mind. Will Newgate save the prisoners from their terrible fate or will they all be killed by Dr. Lamb? Will Eliza join Newgate in his quest, then leave Stonehearst for good? Review Stonehearst is definitely a dark and twisted movie that will hold your attention throughout. Makes one wonder what truly happened in the old pauper asylums back in the day. A lot of history shows how mistreated the mentally ill was and how they endured long hours of torturous therapies, extreme treatments, and neurosurgical procedures, which proved to have been mostly ineffective for curing mental illness. This film is very heart touching to some extent and I throughly enjoyed watching it. One thing that can be said about Stonehearst is it is truly original. The acting is fabulous and everyone was believable in their roles. I feel it deserves a 7.5 out of 10. ReelMockeryJay Skelton is a fan of all television shows and movies. He tries his best […]

Gideon’s Army Review
Gideon’s Army is a crime documentary that debuted at the Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2013. When the film opens, we are introduced to a public defender, Travis Williams, who is struggling to defend the poor in court. He gives the viewers a brief tour of his apartment, which is located next to his workplace and holds very little momentous items because he has no wife and children. Brandy Alexander is a Clayton County, Georgia public defender that spends her days trying to find a way to spare the criminally convicted from prison. She speaks to a seventeen year old, who is facing life in prison, due to a home invasion and robbery. Public self help groups are set up for the public defenders that allows them to open up, about their experiences with the American criminal system. One member admitted to relying on the group to help her continue fighting to help the poor to get their convictions overturned. They speak about how difficult it is to represent a child molester or a statutory rape suspect, but they are forced to treat these cases, just like any other. The defenders deal with people that society does not care about or do they want to admit that they do exist. The justice system forces the poor convicted to plead guilty. If they have no money for their bond, then they are forced to sit in jail forever. If they ever get released back into society, they will not be allowed to vote or may not be able to find employment. Brandy speaks about how one of her clients was not satisfied with her representation, even after she spent many hours with him at the jail because he had no one else. He was devising a plan to murder her, but was found out, before he got a chance to act on his plan. Congressman John Lewis gives a speech to the public defenders and thanks them for their service that they provide for the poor. June Hardwick is another public defender that works diligently trying to help those that were convicted, without proper representation. One prisoner speaks, about how she was wronged by the justice system and lost everything, when she was locked up on her first offense of cocaine possession. She eventually leaves the public defender’s office because of the lack of pay and could no longer afford to live on the twenty dollars that was left out of her bi-weekly paycheck, after she paid her bills. All of the public defenders complain, about how little they are paid. They are still paying their student loans, credit card bills, rent, and utilities, while surviving on less than three hundred dollars for a two week period of time for groceries and petroleum. Travis is struggling with not knowing who is biological father is and sets out to find him. He denies wanting a father, but still wants to know his name. Brandy’s father comes in for a quick visit from Florida and she decides to go skydiving. The public defenders work with the county prosecutors to work out a plea deal for each of their cases. They also set down and explain to them that they have the right to plea not guilty, but most of the defendants decide to plead guilty because they feel that it is in their best interest. Most of the defendants are victims of society because they did not have a good upbringing and ended up in the welfare system, which makes children angry and aggressive over time. Review Gideon’s Army is definitely a great watch and if you want to see how different the justice system treats those that are poor and those that are rich. It is great to see public defenders that truly care, about the outcome of their young defendants. It is sad to hear Brandy say, “we don’t see happy ever afters very often in this profession”, which I am sure is true. This film is definitely an eye opener for anyone that thinks the justice system is flawless. Although, these defendants have committed some of the worst crimes on society it is still sad to see their demise and how they will rot away in the penal system if they are convicted. It remains to be seen if these defendants are cleared of their charges, whether or not they will continue to commit crimes, until they are locked up behind bars for life. The film is perfectly edited and held my attention throughout. I really enjoyed watching Gideon’s Army and feel that it deserves an 8 out of 10. Playground Review
Playground is a documentary that touches base on the child sex trade in America. It debuted in the United States on September 4, 2009 at the Tribeca Film Festival. When the show opens, we are provided information about how Americans travel to Cambodia to sex up child sex rings. Over one thousand children are involved in the child sex industry. Any one can give a pimp twelve dollars to spend a night with a child. Child activists feel that no economy should be built on the suffering of children. The experts are focusing on the United States and how children will be sex trafficked from one state to another. Every American state has a sex trade and that puts it into an organized crime category. The sex trade is number thirteen on the tourism industry and continues to grow daily. The profile of a child in the sex trade business is continuously changing, while many of these kids are from poor backgrounds more of them are now from rich backgrounds. Many children are lured into the sex trade by pimps, who promise them a good life, lots of money, and drugs. Atlanta, Georgia is well known for it’s child sex trade and men will fly into the city, have sex with a child then fly back out, without giving it a second thought to what type of heinous crime they committed. Getting caught pimping out a young girl in Georgia is a misdemeanor and comes with a fifty dollar fine. With the development of the national response system, a missing child must be placed in the National Crime Information Center and an Amber Alert must be initiated. If a child is not found within the first three hours, after reported missing, they are more than likely deceased. Runaways are treated differently because once they are entered into the database, they become a throwaway. Oregon has more sex trade businesses than San Francisco, California. There is a rush of young girls coming into the city and they will stay for two weeks then disappear. Eleven year old girls are seen baby strolling or prostituting and Johns are looking for the perfect experience, which is why the child sex trade industry is so profitable. Extremist groups are now getting involved in the sex trade industry because of the large amounts of cash it brings them. Michelle a young victim of the sex trade, welfare system, and bad parents is introduced to the viewers. She entered foster care, when she was five years old because she was molested by her uncle, who resided with them. She told her drug addict mother, but nothing came of it and over time she became a parental figure for her brothers and sisters. At fourteen years old, she ran away from foster care and ended up in the arms of sex offender, Scurry. He immediately put her in the sex trade industry and moved her from state to state. At one point, cops located Michelle and Scurry in a motel room, but refused to do anything because they both were fully dressed. Nina was victimized by her dug addict, abusive mother, who transported her from city to city to have sex with men. She was taught early on how to please a man and how much to charge them for each individual sex act. Her father tried to save her from her abusive mother, when she was a toddler, but she ran away from school to find her mother. She said that a hundred men lined up to have sex with her each night. Over 600,000 sex offenders have a public record and can be tracked through the public sex offenders database by anyone, but 100,000 cannot be tracked. Twenty-one states have a child sex offender database that has children as young as six years old listed in it. Craigslist is one of the best places for young girls and men, who are soliciting sex. Computer tools have opened up a private world for pedophiles to surf the web for child pornography. Michelle is located in California and agrees to an interview. She now has two small children with the first one being born when she was just fifteen years old. She told about her rape experience and how she laid in the position as a doll looking at the corner of her bedroom, during the actual event. She said that it was not a big deal for her to have sex with thirty to forty-five men a day, when she was being pimped out. She was also raped, cut, and beaten by pedophile, Nathan O’Conner. Michelle is later arrested and charged with child endangerment because she left her infant with a known drug dealer. Review While Playground is a very informative documentary about the American child sex trafficking trade, it is just that and nothing more. While we are introduced to three young victims that is about as far as it goes. The story of missing Michelle is told throughout the film, until she is located in California. I found her story very intriguing and could have listened to her tell her story for the entirety of the film, but instead we are given lots of statistics, which we could found ourself on the Internet. Although Americans might not want to acknowledge such crimes, this documentary helps brings it to life, as it should be. Sex pedophilia is an epidemic in America and it needs to be addressed by out public officials. This is why I feel that Playground only deserves a 6 out of 10.
