The Magicians first season premiered on December 16, 2015 as a special preview. The series is based on the bestselling novels of the same name written by Lev Grossman. It focuses on a group of 20-something friends from Brakebills University. The friends discover their magical abilities and fight off evil creatures threating to destroy the magical world they’ve come to know.
The first three seasons of The Magicians have brought in an average of 700,000 viewers. The fourth season premiered on January 23, 2019. President, Scripted Content, NBC Universal Cable Entertainment, Bill McGoldrick, said “The Magicians raised the bar at SYFY and has gained momentum season after season”.
SYFY announced the renewal of The Magicians for a fifth season on February 27, 2019. Henry Alonso is set to join John McNamara and Sera Gamble as co-showrunner for the fifth season. Seasons 1 through 3 are currently available on Netflix. They can be purchased on YouTube, iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Prime, and Microsoft Store.
