Sullivan’s Crossing Series 2 Episode 2 Recap

A Storm Is Brewing – As the episode opens, Dr. Rabney (Sharleen Kalayll) assures Maggie Sullivan (Morgan Kohan) and Lola Gunderson (Amalia Williamson) that Harry “Sully” Sullivan (Scott Patterson) had a fall but is okay. She stresses the need for more testing to determine the culprit. Stunned, Lola asks what is going on. Maggie says Sully may have Alzheimer’s. Lola accuses her of trying to shut her out. Maggie denies the allegation. Lola insists on notifying Edna Cranebear (Andrea Menard) and Frank Cranebear (Tom Jackson) because they are family. Maggie suggests waiting until they have more information. Lola says Sully needs to know when he appears in a wheelchair. Maggie scolds him for getting up and causing a scene. He claims to have notified the nurse but no one came. When he mentions going home, Lola splits and Maggie is left to return him to his room. Sully gets upset when he learns he may have Alzheimer’s like his father. Maggie assures him that it will be all right.

Jane offers Rob Shandon (Reid Price) to watch Finn. Rob points out that it is her third order this week. She pays him a compliment and says maybe they will see each other later. After she is gone, Cal Jones (Chad Michael Murray) ask if he is going to asks Jane out. Rob utilizes Finn as an excuse but Call isn’t buying it.

Edna is shocked to learn Sully may have Alzheimer’s. Frank questions if it is the right place for Sully when Sydney Shandon (Lindura) arrives. Edna updates her on Sully’s condition.

Maggie calls Dr. Lewis Callaghan (Rhys Bevan-John) to tell him that she needs to push back her start date because her father is unwell. He agrees to wait to start looking for her replacement.

Cal is watching a weather report regarding an impending storm. He compliments Rob’s pot pie. Rob says it was Sarah’s recipe and explains how they met at a culinary school in Toronto. Cal asks if he ever considering moving away from Nova Scotia. Rob admits it crossed his mind but doesn’t think he could part with the diner. Cal has not made up his mind to stay or go.

Against Edna’s advice, Frank takes Sully his hat and some sweetgrass. A nurse (Ann Marie Kerr) confiscates Frank’s lighter to prevent him from burning sweetgrass in Sully’s room. Sully warns him that his time is almost up and needs to get out of there.

During a phone call, Maggie informs Andrew Matthews (Allan Hawco) of her decision to wait until Sully’s test results are back to start working. He urges her to reconsider and promises to be there if she needs him.

Edna spots Frank’s lighter at the nurse’s station before visiting Sully. She embraces him and cuts him a slice of apple pie. Sully says it is his favorite before digging in. They express their feelings for each other. Elsewhere, Lola scans through her case file containing photos of her damaged bicycle.

Ellis (Bri Neal) complains about the mosquitoes. Assessing the bites, Maggie suggests it is an allergic reaction. Sydney tells Ellis that Maggie is a neurosurgeon. Ellis questions if she will return to work after the baby is born too many mothers fail while juggling work and motherhood. Sydney gives Ellis a vitamin B1 supplement. Maggie assures her that it is safe. Ellis asks if she will deal with the barking dog.

Finn complains about Rob’s work schedule and refuses to accompany him to pick up supplies. Rob convinces Clover (Jansyn Blake) to keep an eye on Finn. Elsewhere, Maggie confronts the owner of the barking dog. The man gets belligerent and demands everyone leave him alone. Witnessing the incident, Cal intervenes to calm the man down and agrees to find him a more private campsite. Maggie tells Cal about Sully’s potential Alzheimer’s and her decision to delay taking a hospital position. He assures her that Sully has a lot of friends to lean on.

Rob considers taking Finn to see Sully. Sydney reminds him that Finn is no fan of hospitals and insists the two of them spend quality time together. Edna and Frank are surprised to learn Sully never paid Rob for an order a few weeks back. Edna agrees to pay him. At the hospital, Sully is glad Duncan is back.

Finn locks himself in the restroom and refuses to come out. When Rob doesn’t answer his phone, she calls Sydney who agrees to help. Edna takes down Sully’s welcome home banner. Refusing to believe Sully has Alzheimer’s, Frank claims he changed when Maggie came back. Edna questions if he has been drinking. Frank says Sully started chewing gum again. He comforts her.

Looking through a family photo album, Maggie finds two sobriety tokens in Sully’s things. She calls Phoebe Lancaster (Lynda Boyd) to tell her about Sully’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis and demands to know why she was never told about his alcoholism. Phoebe attributes his drinking problem to her leaving and felt it was his place to tell Maggie.

Rob thanks Sydney for picking up Finn. Before living, Finn asks why he moved out. She admits to being confused about what she wants to do and living with them makes her decision more difficult. She urges Rob to open up to Finn.

Cal pours himself a drink. A barking dog triggers a memory of his childhood. His father and mother have a verbal disagreement about their constant moving. Young Sedona Jones (Charlie Storey) tells Young Cal Jones (Theo Lapaix) that she hates their father. Cal assures her that they will have a real home one day.

Rafe Vadas (Dakota Taylor) invites Sydney out to dinner. She declines his offer. He wants them to pursue a relationship but she fears it would be a mistake. He appears to be disappointed.

Feeling better, Duncan shares his future plans with Sully when he has an attack. The staff rush in and start lifesaving measures. Rabney informs them that Duncan is a DNR. Frantic, Sully insists they help him and has to be restrained by the staff. Elsewhere, Maggie studies Sully’s test results.

Lola shows Cal her old case files. He says the culprit needs to pay and agrees to review the files. Elsewhere, Sydney tells Edna that Rafe wants to pursue a relationship but she is not so sure. Edna claims to have wanted to travel the world when she was young and urges her to not wait. Sydney calls Harvey to see if he will add her name to the roster.

Cal informs Maggie of his plan to stay in Nova Scotia. At the hospital, Frank finds Sully in decline. Sully asks Frank to get him out of there. Frank demands to know what the nurse gave Sully. She tells him that he became aggressive and had to be sedated. When he tries to check Sully out, she says he is being transferred to a secure ward for an evaluation. Elsewhere, Maggie shows Cal the sobriety tokens found in Sully’s things. He denies any knowledge of Sully having a drinking problem and regrets giving him a bottle of tequila. She recalls it was the day he punched Water on the same day.

Frank utilizes burning sweetgrass to activate the hospital fire alarm. Elsewhere, Maggie questions if Sully was drinking. Spotting a bottle of women’s multi-vitamin on a table, she tells Cal that she may know what is wrong with him. Frank pushes Sully out of the hospital in a wheelchair while the staff is occupied.

 

Sullivan’s Crossing Review

The show needs a positive side story to balance out the bleakness. The story is incredibly dark and depressing with no uplifting moments. It’s a bit risky but viewer response appears to have been mostly positive.
