Spent Review 2017

I was recently given the opportunity to watch and review Spent. The film, which is written and directed by Lisa Mikitarian, was released in December of 2017. Spent is an independent film. It features lesser-known actors and I found plenty of poor reviews for that specific reason on IMDB. Anytime you watch independent movies, you have to expect some bad acting. It is really that simple. Getting that out of the way, Spent was a unique experience with a lot of quirk.

The movie stars Darren Barzegar as Lonnie Schumacher and Connie Lomathe as Evelyn Schumacher. Father and husband Herbert (Nick Nerangis) is on the verge of death. With Herb clinging on the edge of life, Lonnie and Connie are working diligently to plan out their wealthy future. Unfortunately for them, things quickly go awry. Herb’s miraculous recovery creates turmoil for mother and son.

Without giving out too many spoilers, Spent takes on many twists and turns that you’re not going to expect. The story is very creative. At times, it is humorous. However, things do get a little bleak from time to time. The ending is slightly open ended, but not completely. It is satisfying at least. It is clear that a lot of effort and love was poured into the project. The originality should certainly be rewarding. And, while it might seem like Spent is a little too outlandish, it isn’t.

There are plenty of greedy people out there and they would do anything for money. It might be a little absurd, but it definitely hits home. At the end of the day, it is the quirkiness of the movie that makes it worth the time and energy. I believe that the style of the film may have had something to do with the “poor acting” reviews found elsewhere. Everything about the show is quirky. The music, characters, story and camera work are all quirky.

What can I say? I enjoyed it. The movie was unique, creative and humorous. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes independent movies and wants to watch something interesting. It isn’t the best movie I’ve seen, but it deserves a much higher rating on IMDB. For the creativity, uniqueness and humor, I’d give Spent a good 7.5 out of 10.
