Six Four Season 1 Episode 2 Recap

As the second episode of Six Four begins, the kidnapper takes Annabel Wallace (Iona Anderson) to a private shed and locks her inside. Tony Hughes (Patrick Robinson) visits Michelle (Vinette Robinson) to give her information about Piers. Tony explains he is only doing it because an innocent kid is involved, but she didn’t get it from him. He warns her that no one is coming to help if something goes wrong. Tony recommends telling her husband about the mess she made before going anywhere near the place. Chris (Kevin McKidd) gets a visit from Philip (Andrew Whipp) to ask for a favor. Philip says he has kind of gotten to know Robert Wallace who may want to appoint a chief constable he can trust.

Philip wants to know if the journalist talked to anyone else. Chris says she only told him about the recording which Philip claims isn’t true. Philip says they waited for days and never got any calls. He always had the feeling that Jim wasn’t telling them everything. Philip asks Chris to speak to her and find out what she means by the recording. Chris reveals that he was seeing Sam for a bit until Michelle found out. Philip always thought it’d be Michelle who’d cheat on him. Stuart Simpson (Lorne MacFadyen) rushes to erase all the data on his phone. Chris is followed when he goes out and calls Samantha Wishart.

As he leaves her a message, he realizes he is being followed. He runs into Sharon (Kathryn Howden) who comes inside with him. Chris talks to her about Julie Mackie. She reveals she was the family liaison officer. Sharon doesn’t know anything about a journalist and doesn’t think there was anything to cover up. She goes on to say there were no calls to the house. Sharon thinks they let the family down since they never found out what happened to Julie. Sharon knows nothing about Six Four, but she remembers that Gary McLean was responsible for the recording stuff. Unfortunately, he is dead so they won’t be able to speak to him. He was killed by his boyfriend.

When Chris sits down, he reads about Gary’s murder. He looks at Gary’s service record until Charlie comes over to joke about his delivery van robbery. Chris finds that the file he wants to look at has been locked. He discovers information about Gary’s mother April McLean. DS Shereen Rahman (Nalini Chetty) tells him they’ve had a call about a missing person from Pauline Wallace who is the Justice Minister’s wife. She wants to report her daughter missing. Robert Wallace (Richard Coyle) learns that many networks want to interview him now, but he has received nothing from the leadership. He receives a call from Pauline who tells him to come home now because Annabel has gone missing.

Stuart is questioned about Annabel’s whereabouts although he claims not to know where she is. When he claims nothing is going on, he is told one of Annabel’s friends said he was meeting her last night. Stuart denies everything and claims Annabel wasn’t meeting him. Shereen and Chris meet Pauline Wallace to learn more about Annabel. She has tried to contact her friends from school, but there’s no answer from any of them. Pauline also says the Find My Phone feature isn’t helping. The phone reception at the school can be patchy too. Last year, Annabel didn’t come back from her summer holiday when she was meant to. Pauline asked the school to phone the police this morning, but they wanted to wait so she called them.

Chris says they should contact one of their colleagues down there. While Michelle sneaks around, Shereen and Chris talk about the possibility that Annabel ran off with a teacher. Chris admits he doesn’t know and he doesn’t think he is okay. Shereen wonders if she should’ve asked him to come before telling him to get back. Gordon Byrne (Alex Ferns) learns about Annabel. He gets Chris’s number and says he’ll go down to the school right away. Annabel sees a car outside so she begins banging on the door in hopes of getting attention. Jim Mackie (James Cosmo) walks up to the door. Gordon looks through Annabel’s stuff and learns that the phone is missing.

Nothing has been posted on social media. Gordon wants the names of her friends so he can talk to them. They tell him that she might’ve been going for a walk last night, but they don’t mention anything about Stuart. Robert Wallace doesn’t seem too concerned about Annabel. He is told that the First Minister’s office wants to talk to him in person. Jim disguises his voice when calling the Wallace house to tell Pauline he has her daughter. They must do as he says if they want to see her again. Before he hangs up, he tells Pauline that she’ll get another call with his demands. Chris visits April McLean and says he was a friend of Gary. Once he comes inside, April admits that Gary was never the same after working on that girl’s disappearance.

He barely spoke to her or his father and she had to take dinner up to his room. April claims the other officers on the job bullied him. After Chris asks about the recording, April lets him see Gary’s room. Although the recording equipment is there, the actual recordings were taken away when the police searched the house. Chris asks if she remembers any of the officers or Philip. April says there was one man named Bill who worked with him. Chris thought Bill Martin was in London when Gary died. April says he was there because he came to see her. He claimed he was the only one who liked Gary. Gordon goes looking for evidence at the spot where Annabel was likely kidnapped.

He finds tire tracks and a phone. Michelle calls Chris to say she loves him and she really messed up. She admits there is something she needs to tell him. In the car, Chris gets a message from Sam asking him to come over right now. Michelle pretends to be part of a cleaning crew to get into a building. Chris meets Samantha (Selin Hizli) who says she is being followed, her phone has been hacked, and her flat is being watched. She reveals she was contacted by Stuart Simpson who teaches at Strathalmond School which is where Annabel goes. Stuart contacted her with a story he wanted to sell about Julie Mackie not being missing. He claimed to have proof that Julie is dead. Sam asked Jim Mackie about it.

He eventually got in touch and told her about the recording of the phone call the police covered up. Jim offered to give her a copy. Instead, he gave her a phone and said she’d get a message telling her where to go. Sam confirms he mentioned Six Four and it is a who instead of a what. It is a code name for someone who works for the security services. She agrees to let him take the phone. Chris says he’ll go back to Jim’s to see what he is mixed up in. Michelle manages to sneak into Piers’s room. He asks her to just leave and calls her Sarah. Chris tries to find Jim who doesn’t seem to be home. Michelle tells Piers that she is looking for a girl. After he says he isn’t in that world anymore, Michelle shows him a picture of Olivia.

He doesn’t know why he should help her after what she did to him. When Piers begins wheezing and struggling to breathe, Michelle contemplates leaving. She turns around and helps him only for him to hit her when another person enters the room. Chris breaks into Jim Mackie’s house and finds antlers on a table. Piers tells Michelle that she took ten years of his life, but she claims he deserved it. They find something in her pocket. While Chris continues looking around, Piers realizes that the girl is Michelle’s daughter. She claims she is their daughter. Chris hears someone at the door and sees a black vehicle parked outside. He hides upstairs when they pick the lock and come in.

Six Four Review

The second episode of Six Four slowly developed the story while providing tidbits of information without giving too much away. The performances are decent when the action slows down enough to really showcase them, but there is a lot of running around in Six Four so that doesn’t happen often. The soundtrack and camera work are good.

Truthfully, I want to like this or I want to like it more than do, but it isn’t giving me enough to care about at the moment. That may change in the next episode, but it seems the lack of backstory and character development have left a gaping hole. Nevertheless, there are only four episodes so it may be easy enough to justify binging the series just to see what happens.

I just don’t expect to have any emotional connection to the story at any point, but I am interested in seeing what is going on. The episode scores a 6 out of 10.
