As the episode begins, Grace (Olive Gray) tells Nelly (Lennie James) and Zita (Camilla Beeput) about encounter Gideon Charles on the night of his death. She explains that she tried to sneak out of the house without being spotted but Gideon found her. Gideon is preparing her favorite food but Grace doesn’t want to be anywhere near him. So, he tells her to leave through the kitchen since that would be quickest. Then, he tells her that he is not angry with her but he is angry at the fools for making Grace go through all of that. She asks for her money but Gideon says there aren’t any promises left between them. She reminds Gideon that he offered her money to stay in the caravan and pretend to be her. Grace tells Nelly that she wouldn’t have done it but Gideon promises.

Grace wants her grand since she stayed there with a chain around her ankle for hours. Eventually, Gideon gives her a small amount of money and she leaves. Grace explains to Nelly and Zita that she returned and stabbed Gideon in the stomach with a knife. When she was finished, Gideon was in a pool of blood on the ground. She grabs the money Gideon left, washes her face, and calls Nelly to ask for help. After the intro, Nelly and Zita discuss Grace, her story, and what to do with her. Zita reminds Nelly that Grace was out and returned to stab the life out of Gideon. She doesn’t understand that but Nelly does.

Zita encourages Nelly to help her look it in the eye by calling O’Halloran (Nadine Marshall) but he wants to be sure first. Zita tells Nelly that she wants him out today so she can separate herself and her kid from all of this. Nelly calls Stace (Susan Lynch) a bit later but she doesn’t answer her phone. Then, he finds Grace trying to leave. He tries to convince her that his problem with Zita has nothing to do with her. He warns Grace that they’ll put her in jail for a long time. She agrees to show him the knife she used to kill Gideon before saying that Gideon had a getaway bag. It contained items that he would need if he was going to flee and it included a thumb drive.

Nelly calls someone and asks them if he can come around before O’Halloran arrives at the door. Grace hides and Nelly answers the door seconds later. Nelly is asked about Grace before he tries to make a deal with the detective. He says that he wants everything he knows to go on record. So, he promises to visit her at the station tomorrow for a proper interview. When O’Halloran leaves, Grace is told to come out from her hiding space and Nelly tells her that he intends to blame everything on Paul. He wants to make Paul real and he wants to put the murder weapon in his hand. Nelly wants to go to the places Gideon took her so he can look for Paul.

He is going to put Grace somewhere safe first. Nelly wraps the knife up in newspaper and plastic before they leave. Before too long, they arrive and speak with Tam (Jason Flemyng). Nelly tells Tam that it wasn’t him or Grace who killed Gideon and that is why he wants to hide her. Despite some reluctancy, Tam agrees to let her stay. Nelly chats with Grace before meeting with Stace. She wants to know what Nelly did to get kicked out of Zita’s place and she suspects it might have something to do with Grace. Stace goes on about a dream she had and she doesn’t want Nelly to lie to her. He admits that Grace is in trouble and he wants to help her. Nelly lies and pretends that Grace did not kill Gideon.

Goz (Thomas Coombes) grabs the keys and tells Daisy (Remmie Milner) that he won’t go if she doesn’t want him to. They go back and forth until Daisy takes the keys and gives Goz the kid. Claire (Suranne Jones) returns home and tells Barry that she jumped out of a plane. She talks about the missing kids forum she has joined and telling them everything. She admits that everything scares her so he thought jumping out of a plane might’ve helped with that. She confesses that she hated every second of it from start to finish but she wants to do it again. Meanwhile, Nelly finds out that Daisy is going to drive him about. Melon (Stephen Graham) sits outside and waits for Bernie (Alice May Feetham).

Nelly and Daisy chat about Goz before Nelly asks her to pull over. He tells her that he is going to let Goz and everyone else off of the hook because he has asked enough. He explains that he is never going to stop because he doesn’t know how. Nelly says he doesn’t know where he is going but he isn’t lost either. Nelly gets out and leaves Daisy in the vehicle. Seconds later, Bernie confronts Melon outside. She wants to know what he is doing out there. She says she wants him to leave her alone so she can think about stuff. He says he doesn’t want her to be too far before offering to tell her the truth. Bernie threatens to call Nelly so he will stop Melon. He says he is fighting for his life but she wants him gone. She rushes off and heads back inside.

Next, Nelly breaks into a building by sneaking in through a window. He checks the club and uses his cellphone to light the way. During the search, Nelly finds a bed that looks like it has been used recently. He also finds a wall with a hole it in and a dresser. Nelly continues the search but doesn’t find anything. He goes back outside and speaks with Tam on the phone about Grace. He speaks with Grace and tells her that someone has been through Richard’s place already. He hasn’t been able to find Gideon’s getaway bag and Grace isn’t sure where it might be. She doesn’t know addresses or anything like that. When the call ends, Nelly wonders what he should do next.

He smokes a cigarette before checking a map nearby. Then, he calls Melon who pretends he is with Bernie. He also insists that everything is okay before Nelly imagines he sees Jody nearby. He tells Melon that he is trying to make his relationship with Zita be like Melon and Bernie’s. The call ends and Nelly continues walking until he spots a red car with the trunk open. He goes inside the building nearby and hides from a woman as she leaves with a bag. The woman returns and tells someone to get ready now. Nelly looks inside and spots a young girl so he sneaks inside. The woman spots him and begins pushing him. They get into a scuffle until Nelly gets the best of her and he threatens to kill her.

She fights back again so he knocks her out. Then, he tells the young girl that he doesn’t know what to do here. The girl appears to be Jody but she doesn’t know who Nelly is. He tries to explain everything to her but she doesn’t seem to be listening to him. Nelly grabs the woman’s car keys, money, and phone before asking Jody if he can take her to her mother. He shows her the bracelet and tells her about the yellow one she made for Dylan. Nelly thanks her for the bracelet before they leave in the car moments later and Nelly calls Claire to tell her about everything. Jody is returned home a few. Despite it all, Nelly leaves alone.

 

Save Me Review

I am not sure I understand what happened in this episode. I can’t understand what Nelly followed to find Jody. Was it information he had previously or stuff he got from Grace? It seemed a bit too easy considering everything Nelly went through last season. Nevertheless, the episode was likely the best this season. I guess Nelly found Jody but she has changed completely. Will she ever be able to overcome everything she went through? We have two episodes left so a lot can happen from here on out.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see where the writers decide to go from here. This episode was very good and much better than the previous ones this season though. It scores an 8 out of 10. Previous recaps of Save Me are available on Reel Mockery.
