Reyka Series 2 Episode 3 Recap

The episode opens in a flashback with Gabriel crying uncontrollably. Having enough, Portia (Nokuthula Ledwaba) starts to place a pillow over his face when Angus Speelman (Iain Glen) approaches. He tries to reassure her that the colic will go away but she fears it is something else. She suggests returning him to his parents and say it was a misunderstanding. He warns that they will go to jail because they abducted a baby. While embracing her, he promises to take care of it tomorrow.

Leon Lombard (Frank Rautenbach) rescues Reyka Gama (Kim Engelbrecht) from the water and administers CPR. She coughs up water and gasps for breath. After being shot in the arm, Detective Nick Tanner (Gerald Steyn) gives Ayanda (Samkelo Ndlovu) a description of the suspect. Spotting the potential suspect, Ayanda initiates a pursuit. While searching a boat, she is attacked from behind by the suspect. Police search the pier. The suspect moves a heavy barrel in front of an opening before entering a potential flat. An officer stops a truck and shows the driver (Xolani Diamini) Speelman’s mug shot. The driver denies seeing him but shows a sigh of relief when the officer lets him go.

Reyka is examined by a doctor who says another minute, she would not have survived. She and Leon are kissing when Tanner enters with his arm in a sling. After Leon leaves, Tanner reminds Reyka that he is married before apologizing for not being there for her. She says he was there at the stakeout. Elsewhere, the driver brings his truck to a halt. After climbing out of the sleeper, Speelman removes his watch and gives it to the driver. The driver gives him his coat before he gets out of the truck.

Reyka receives a call from Tama (Sell Maake Ka-Ncube) telling her about Thulisile “Thuli” Gama’s (Rashaan Stackling) bodyguard. He questions Speelman’s plan. She says he does not have a passport when Ayanda arrives to say she has been discharged.

Ekhaya Shelter – Speelman trades his belt for a bed.

Ayanda cannot reach Zwelethu (Pallance Dldla) on his phone. Reyka claims Leon being married is the only reason she is with him. After polishing his victims’ shoes, the killer places them on the floor and masturbates. He rubs the shoes in an intimate manner. During a phone call, Reyka tells Ayanda that her former partner, Detective Nandi Cele (Thando Thabethe) died while investigating the cane field murders. She admits to never telling her what she meant to her. Ayanda assures her that she knew it.

Two fishermen find Casey’s (Jessie Diepeveen) body. Elsewhere, Reyka accuses Dr. Lawrence (Wayne Van Rooyen) of misdiagnosing Speelman. He says Speelman is in a volatile mental state after learning about Shirley Buchanan’s stroke and seeing her interview. He warns that Speelman will want revenge and urges her to leave KZN but she refuses.

At the crime scene, Leon is coughing. He suggests Casey (the body has not been identified yet) has been in the water for two days. After seeing the unique tattoo on Casey’s neck, Reyka reminds them that Neville was killed at that time. Leon continues to cough.

Speelman visits Zain Jacob’s father in an assisted living facility. Mr. Jacobs says people like Zain Jacobs (Joey Rasden) never change. He claims Zain secretly recorded his employees. Speelman tells him that Zain spiraled out of control when his mother died but is doing better. He expresses his desire to speak to Shirley but she is in a coma. Mr. Jacobs urges him to go see Shirley before it is too late when Ella (Jordan Carr) and Glynis Jacobs (Bianca Le Grange) arrive. While Speelman shows Ella a magic trick, a news alert of his escape appears on the TV. He races out of the facility. Ella gives Glynis a scare but is safely located outside.

Leon continues to cough. The sex workers refuse to talk to them. Reyka finds what appears to be a hairband (bracelet or earring). She hears Ibrahim restrained to a bathroom sink. He claims to have paid his debt but they demanded more money. She frees him. He tells her that there are eight guards. Ula (Taiwo Kazeem) tries to stop them from leaving. Ayanda holds him at gunpoint while they make their way to the van. The men fire shots as the van speeds away.

Reyka recalls the first day after her adoption. Leon promises to stay until Speelman is apprehended. He tells her that he would leave Georgina Lombard (Roeline Daneel) if it were possible. He claims to have feelings for her. Tanner arrives with a bouquet of flowers when he sees them making out. He calls himself stupid before tossing the flowers on the ground and driving away.

Speelman visits Portia. She threatens to scream if he does not leave. With tears in his eyes, he tells her that Shirley is dying. He reminds her of their being in love and having Gabriel and Reyka. She lets him in. He embraces her.

The next morning, Reyka finds Leon unresponsive in her bed as the episode ends.

    Some random thoughts…

The operation to catch the killer was very poorly planned and even worse upon execution. Worse plan ever that should have been easy pickings.

Leon is not very smart for someone who works as an underwater rescue diver to a)not just get a routine check up and b) not recognize that his lungs took on water and placed him at risk for an embolism.

Could have done without the prolonged masterbation scene. Could have been conveyed in a much less graphic way.

Reykas call to Ayanda was like a “drunk dial”. Not sure what the motivation even was.

Dr. Lawrence is a complete moron in every way. ‘Speelman will want revenge so leave KZN’. She’s a detective who carries a firearm at all times. Besides, it’s like saying “Someone in Texas wants to kill you so leave Texas”.

Casey’s dead body was like level 9 out of 10 grotesque. Like “…of the Living Dead” grotesque.

The whole part where they search the Maritime Inn was just plain stupid. Any evidence in admissible. And rescuing Ibrahim would not have kept the thugs from recapturing him and roughing him up even more for escaping the first time.

Why can’t Tanner just “get the net”. I mean we all could see it. Reyka is just not into him. He’s a coworker anyway. And then he gets mad for discovering something he knew all along… which is she was with Leon. Talk about delusional.

When Reyka finds Leon unresponsive I thought for sure he was going to burst out laughing and say “I gotcha”. Because the actor looked like he was trying really hard to not break into a grin.

    Still a great show overall.

Yea that masturbation scene was way over the top. Also believe there are too many irrelevant subplots probably just to reach the overall episode count. I question why they even brought Tanner back unless they just wanted someone to drool over Reyka. Really don’t get why she’s taking the risk to have an affair with Leon anyway considering the potential ramifications.

Leon is supposed to be an expert in search and rescue, but he just overlooked his warning cough. I fail to understand the importance of Reyka’s mom Elsa and her vacation with Richard unless that’s going to come to something or Reyka’s conversations with Tama. Would be nice to see more of her daughter though.

I have a feeling it’s going to be predictable in the end but we’ll see.

That was another reall weird observation I had but forgot to put down. Reyka calls her mother, who is having great time at this resort, to say that Angus escaped. From there..

Mom: That’s horrible love… I should come home now.

Reyka: No mum don’t spoil your holiday.

Mom should have then said, “Well then why TF did you even call me… were you TRYING to spoil my good time?!”

It just seemed pointless… and weird . 😐

lol! Yep. It does feel like she’s raining on her parade a little bit. Thought it was weird that the Principal didn’t want Thuli to have a body guard for fear of bullying, but she’s getting a body guard now. She’s supposed to be safe in the private school though lol. Just a number of things to nitpick.
