Resident Evil Season 1 Episode 4 Recap

The Turn – The fourth episode of Resident Evil begins in Tijuana, Mexico. Angel Rubio (Pedro De Tavira) returns home as Carlos (Carlos Feldman) reminds him that the rent needs paid. Angel insists he’ll take care of it. His dad asks if he is going to pay it thanks to his job since he knows he doesn’t have a job. However, Angel claims he has work. Angel claims corporations come here, build factories, and act like the people don’t exist. When things go wrong and people get hurt, our “saviors” disappear. He interviews a woman, Susana Franco, and asks about her husband. She explains he was running a test and the cage was left open. The rat bit him. Her husband had a rash and complained about flashing lights and loud noises. It got so bad that even the baby would bother him. Then, he would get angry all the time.

The symptoms lasted for three days before he started killing people. She shows Angel something she found among his belongings and says people need to know the truth because Umbrella lies. Angel goes home and puts the USB stick in his computer before finding information about the Raccoon City incident. In Calais, France, Jade (Ella Balinska) and Richard (Turlough Convery) are transported in a van. Richard asks Jade about working for the University. He tells her to relax because he has a chip in his arm that means Umbrella is on the way. Albert (Lance Reddick) and other coworkers check the sample only to receive an antiviral fail warning. He gets angry, throws things around, and yells for everyone to get out. Jade (Tamara Smart) and Billie (Siena Agudong) discuss a party the kids are holding.

Billie learns she has 3 hours and 22 minutes left. She begins panicking and wondering if they should tell their father even though Jade claims nothing is going to happen. Billie wants to go to the party. If she is going to die, she doesn’t want to sit and wait for it to happen. Once Richard and Jade reach the destination, he says they’re in an enclosed space with limited exits and about 300 barely contained zeros. They’re taken to a Brotherhood Acolyte (Adam Atom) as Richard warns him that his boss will rain hell on him if they don’t let them go. He reveals that the last Umbrella to come here was sent home with his balls in his hand. Richard asks what he wants and whether it is money, tech, or meth. While Richard is beaten, Jade tells them that they’re trying to take her to Umbrella because she wants to understand the virus and stop it.

He claims it can’t be stopped because the plague is a scourge from God. When Jade asks about the zombies, the acolyte calls them God’s miracle. He says the people died to create a better world. Jade attacks them only to be quickly overwhelmed. In the past, Jade and Billie walk through the streets toward the party and talk about the locals. Billie makes her say that she’ll get away if she goes crazy. Jade and Richard are locked in a cell together. They argue whether Umbrella is worse than these people. Richard reveals he has kids named Charlie and Cardi. Umbrella takes care of him so he can take care of them. He shows Jade a picture of his two kids or dogs. She calls him an a-hole and knocks his picture to the ground. Richard accuses her of hating dogs and being violet like her psycho sister.

Jade claims her sister died when she was 14 before we jump back in time. Jade and Billie go to the party where they watch Simon (Connor Gosatti) make a big jump on his skateboard. He apologizes to Billie for yesterday and Billie borrows his board. She tells Jade that it’ll be fun so she should watch. Billie climbs to the top and tells Tammy that she is going to jump. Simon tells Jade that his mother has worked for Umbrella since before he was born. They’ve moved all over and it has sucked. He argues that you have your parents and that is what really matters. Billie makes the jump only to learn that her sister didn’t even watch her. Angel arrives in New Raccoon City to see what he can find out about the virus. He starts by following all the locals on social media. Meanwhile, Evelyn (Paola Nunez) does yoga with Diana (Emily Child).

Evelyn is interrupted by a call confirming they got a breach on the network and surveillance grabbed a visual. When she looks at the picture of Angel, she admits to knowing him. Once Albert gets home, he puts handcuffs on a chair and prepares a syringe in case he has to deal with Billie. He finds them gone so he checks the security camera and watches the girls leave home together. Albert sends a message to Jade to see where she is. Richard tells Jade that the bullet went straight through so it just hurts like heck. She finds it strange that the zombies are working in a coordinated way. Richard suggests the Brotherhood found a way to train them. They hear a chainsaw and know something is wrong. One of the prisoners is killed with the chainsaw before a chained zombie is given a piece of the meat.

Once she begins screaming, the other zombies begin working again. Jade suggests the female zombie is controlling the others. Since Richard doesn’t want to be fed to the evil grandma, he wants to escape. He confesses he was in prison because he did a lot of things. He can’t remove the cell door without her help so he offers to tell everyone that she is dead and let her go. He just wants to go home and see his dogs. They remove the door and begin fighting with the guards. Richard finds keys on one of the guards and what looks like a phone which he gives to Jade. He kills the guy with the chainsaw before finding a locker full of guns. His friends take them while Jade is told to grab the chainsaw. Richard can’t read the labels on the control so he just flips a bunch of the levers and ends up letting the zombies out.

Some of them are killed while Richard instructs Jade to get behind her. He kills a bunch of zombies and tries to brag to Jade who has already left. Jade catches up with her sister at the party. Billie doesn’t think she’d care if she died since she only cares about hooking up with Simon. She suggests her sister will get over it when she dies. After Jade denies that, Billie confesses that she has never been good with people and only has her sister. However, Jade doesn’t need her and never has. When Angel shows up at the party asking for Jade, they call him a narc and everyone runs. Jade sees him and immediately tells her sister that they need to go. Angel catches up with them to warn them the person who got bit is in danger. He also claims to need their help. Once he shows them how he found them, he explains the virus infects the brains.

It turns the host into something inhuman. They accuse him of lying, but Angel says he wouldn’t travel halfway around the world for a lie. He tells them about the nuclear blast at the first Raccoon City. The virus infected so many that Umbrella and the US government decided to burn it all down to cover it up. If it is happening again, many people will die. Angel needs proof before he can go public with the story though. He needs to talk to the victim. He wants to talk to Albert because he was there and is supposed to be dead. Angel goes on to say that there is no record that they exist including no birth certificate or SSN. He eventually grabs Billie and notices the mark on her shoulder. When they run from him, Angel follows. He is stopped by Umbrella and taken into custody moments later.

In the present, Jade grabs the acolyte and asks about the zombie that is changed up. He claims she is the queen. Jade manages to lock all the zombies in a cell except for the queen. She cuts the queen’s head off using the chainsaw and takes the head with her before she is chased away by a group of zombies. Jade locks herself in a room and puts the head in a bag. She sits down and calls her daughter Bea since she suspects this is the end. Before the battery dies, Jade tells her that she did everything for her and she is proud of her. She decides to fight only to have trouble getting the chainsaw started. She finds grenades and uses them instead. When the zombies break the door down, the grenade blows up. She is nearly attacked by one of the surviving zombies, but Richard saves her.

She takes the bag as they try to find a way to reach the roof. Angel finds himself handcuffed to a chair. He tells Evelyn that he wants the South African police and not the police she owns. He asks her what happened to Susana Franco in Tijuana since she disappeared after he interviewed her. Evelyn claims she took her husband’s insurance payout and went somewhere beautiful. Angel wants the truth about this. He knows she moved Joy here and something went wrong since one of the test animals got out. Angel claims he can help her fix this if she lets him go. While Albert drives around looking for his girls, they run home. Richard and Jade kill zombies on their way to the rooftop. Albert realizes that they’re quickly running out of time. Billie believes it is happening. Richard tells Jade to drop the bag as he holds onto her and asks her to pull him up.

Resident Evil Review

The fourth episode of Resident Evil was slightly better than the first three although many of the same problems remain. The episode finally created an interesting character in Richard Baxter only to kill the character before it was over. Some of the dialogue is bad because it feels like something from an adult CW series.

With the flashbacks, there are just too many moving pieces making it difficult to care about one particular thing. It is already hard enough to care about any of the characters especially the main protagonist because her attitude is often poor in the flashbacks. The action scenes aren’t bad although they could use a little more lighting at times.

Resident Evil will likely be enjoyed by a small group of viewers who enjoy watching young adult dramas. It isn’t terrible and it isn’t great, but it tends to learn closer to the first group. The episode scores a 5.5 out of 10. Recaps of Resident Evil can be found on Reel Mockery here. Want to support our work? Click here.
