Episode 4 opens with Jess Li (Jemma Moore) being held and questioned at gunpoint by Sir George Chapman (Peter Guinness) in his study/library. Being that Dr. Matthew Nolan (Richard Armitage) has never visited his house, it was her claim he sent her that ultimately gave her away.

Despite being scared to death by several vicious-looking caged dogs and no Dr. Kate Ward (Lucianne McEvoy), DC Hana Li (Jing Lusi) manages to find Flight Marshal Toni Zhang (Dan Li). With Dr. Steven Hurst’s (Oliver Maltman) phone unlocked, Nolan attempts to make contact with someone when he is nearly caught by the passing flight attendant, Tiffany Songyun (Xiangy Tan). The fright causes him to drop the phone and kick it a bit too far under his seat, which later leads to him popping a stitch while trying to retrieve it. While cleaning and covering the wound in the crew area, he does manage to register his face for quick access to the phone.

While Sir George questions Jess, a man outside sets up a sniper’s perch. Sir George inadvertently confirms the deaths on Flight 357 as murders but becomes amused when he discovers that Jess is a reporter as she has been claiming.

Nolan is nearly caught with the cell phone again when Hana surprises him with the news of the unsuccessful search. She might have likely caught him if it wasn’t for the distraction of the blood on his shirt. Much to his surprise, she thanks him for his help after requesting his continued assistance for another search.

On his way downstairs, Nolan intervenes when he witnesses a rude passenger accosting Tiffany over not getting his beer on time. When Tiffany tells him that they just started experiencing problems with the drink elevator, he orders her to go get Hana and tell her to meet him downstairs. Once Nolan pries the door open and discovers Kate’s body, he flips out. Hana manages to calm him down by sharing that she’s been working with MI5 and their theory that Shen Zhao (Elaine Tan) passed one of them something. Toni overhears this as well.

While Jess shares her earlier captured video footage with Sir George, he receives a call from Nolan. Without much of a preamble, Nolan asks why he didn’t intervene at Heathrow. Sir George says he wanted to but couldn’t. Just as Nolan shares news of Kate’s death, the sniper outside gets approval to take the shot. Not long into their discussion and before Jess and Sir George come under fire, Hana and Toni discover Nolan on the phone. Hana accuses him of being a spy while Toni insists on a strip search. Before that can happen, Ren Yunxi (Tai Yin Chan) interrupts with requests from Captain Chen (Thomas Chaanhing) to speak with Toni.

By this time, Sir George and Jess are under fire. There is an intense game of cat and mouse that goes on for several minutes, in which Sir George kills the power to the house and receives a shoulder wound. Jess is stunned by Sir George’s calm demeanor, giving the impression that he is a practiced spy with lots of field experience. Although he is ultimately gunned down, he does help Jess escape and not only gives her something and tells her to trust no one but he says suspects Nolan’s incident has something to do with the Anglo/China Nuclear Deal.

Hana relays the latest murder to Delaney and demands help on the plane, but it appears that her hands are tied as far as landing the plane goes. After their conversation, Hana finds Nolan and gives him the pep talk he needs to muster the courage to examine Kate’s body. This leads to discovery that the Kate was possibly stabbed with something that leaves a star-shaped marking. The makeshift autopsy is soon interrupted, once again, by Captain Chen. It seems that the passengers have not only learned about the murders but are up in arrears about them.

By the time Hana and Toni arrive in the cabin, the passengers are in complete pandemonium. Things only get worse from there when Hana tells Chen that she’ll need to search all the passengers and their luggage, in an attempt to locate the murder weapon. Toni wastes little time letting everyone know he is opposed to that, but Hana ultimately gets her way. She chooses to address the passengers via the loudspeaker and tells them all about the deaths while also asking for their cooperation with a cabin and carry-on luggage search. The passengers don’t appear to be opposed.

At Thames House, Delaney not only learns about Sir George’s call to 911 but much to her surprise, he learns about Jess’s presence thanks to John. Delaney later leans on Mike at the London US Embassy to ID Jess. It’s not long before MI5 knows all about Jess, her father, and her connection to Hana. Ruth also later approaches Delaney with the discovery of an old MI6 operation titled ‘Blindside’ that is not only tied to World Pacific Medicine but Sir George as well. This sends Delaney into a blind rage into John’s office where she threatens to go ‘full Snowden’ unless he reveals the truth about what’s going on.

What Delaney learns is not only shocking but incites her even further. She learns that the British government has been using citizens as unwitting couriers. Dr. Chris Peele (Rick Warden), on the other hand, was a willing asset. Shen supposedly got spooked the night at the bar and had to seemingly plant her intel on Nolan rather than just hand it off to Peele. Delaney later discusses her discovery with Mike, who appears to agree with John that China is behind what’s going on. Delaney, however, claims that it’s far too messy for the Chinese to be involved. She suspects that someone is scrambling trying to fix an op that went horribly amiss.

Hana and Toni haven’t had any success with their search and much to Nolan’s surprise when she comes to him she gives him her phone to contact Sir George. He does but gets Jess instead. It doesn’t take long before Nolan learns who Jess is and gets Hana involved in the conversation. After a quick exchange of information, Hana orders Jess to go to their father’s, Tin Lok’s Li (Dave Wong) house and wait for Superintendent Simon O’Brian (Robert Gilbert) to show up. Before their conversation ends, Jess shares what Sir George told her about Nolan having ‘it.’ The episode ends with the discovery of Chris Peele’s death.

 

Red Eye Review

This episode was even much better than the last. I find the theory of passing only information using unwitting couriers truly interesting. I wonder if this idea stems from some real-life inspiration or something that was entirely fabricated. Either way, it’s extremely intriguing but risky nonetheless.

There are still plenty of slow, lackluster moments but as far as building suspense and progressing the story, the series delivers. On top of that, I wouldn’t say the performances are entirely awful. Yes, there are plenty of bad moments, but there are enough good ones to balance out the equation. I’d give this episode an easy 6 out of 10.
