Rain Dogs Series 1 Episode 2 Recap

Scenes From A Crucifixion – The episode begins with Costello Jones (Daisy May Cooper) demanding to know where Gloria (Ronke Adekoluejo) has been hiding. Gloria admits to messing up. Costello tells her that Florian Selby (Jack Farthing) cleared the way for her and Iris (Fleur Tashjian) to stay in their old flat. Gloria makes a sarcastic remark about Selby being released from prison. Lolly (Georgina Winter) joins Costello on her way to work. Konstantin (Dragos Mostenescu) orders the girls to undergo a “pussy check” before hitting the stage.

Fen Rain Dogs BBC One HBO

Costello is on the stage at the Flesh Pot when a The London Reformer journalist, Sophie Fenster (Alice Haig) admits to being a fan of her work. Costello denies having any principle values before offering to show her fanny. Sophie assures her that she isn’t judging her, she just wants an interview. When Costello refuses the offer, she offers to publish a story in her own words. Costello agrees to do it for 500.

Iris tells Selby that it’s time for her to seek therapy for Costello’s wine obsession while he was away. He sarcastically asks if she’s Tony Soprano. She demands therapy with Dr. Melfi. He admits therapy did nothing for him but agrees to research it for her.

Gloria apologizes to her father, The Duke (Steve Toussaint) for the fifteenth time. He asks why she’s apologizing. She recalls a list of her bad decisions. He orders her to prepare a poor man for his funeral.

Selby Rain Dogs HBO BBC One

Selby warns Iris that Fen (Daniel Phung) cheats. Fen assures him that he can beat a child without cheating. Iris asks Selby about caring for his mum. After saying a “nightmare,” he claims to have been forced to sleep in a bunk bed. Iris says, “Mahjong” to win the game. Selby collects the winnings.

Gloria dances to “Werewolves of London” by Warren Zevon when Paul (Sam Hazeldine) says his kind of party. She immediately apologizes. He admits it had been 45 years since he last saw his “old man” before asking her to push replay. They toast his dad with a beer.

Gloria and Paul get intimate next to his father’s casket. He claims his father would have been proud.

Costello writes her story when Selby and Iris arrive home. He’s tucking her in when Gloria and Paul arrive with furniture. Gloria describes Selby as a “public school prick” before telling Paul about his stint in prison. Selby reminds her that he went to prison for protecting Costello. He recommends Paul utilize three condoms when having sex with Gloria.

Costello cleans Lenny Wilson’s (Adrian Edmondson) flat while Selby visits the London City Gospel Hall. Billy (Cameron Jack) informs him that the meeting was delayed until his arrival. Matt (Chris Porter) explains the rehabilitation group is a requirement of their probation. Costello tells Lenny about her piece for The London Reformer. He demands she utilizes his real name while warming his hands. She cleans while he masturbates. Billy admits to abusing his wife for years. He explains how paintball controls his anger. Laughing loudly, Selby asks Matt if he can trade sexual favors with someone to get out of the group. Costello asks Lenny for a painting for a birthday party. He gives her a painting of his ex-wife’s vagina.

Immy (Anna Andersen) loves Lenny’s painting which she believes is a sunset in India. Lucy (Kristen Foster) tells her that it’s a “symbol of transience.” Costello explains the specifics of the article she’s writing. Immy suggests she should have gone to college. Costello claims to have attended Durham University where she majored in English.

Richard (Tom Durant Pritchard) takes photos of Costello for her The London Reformer article. He suggests a photo in her costume but she refuses.

Iris brags about Costello’s name being in the paper without her committing a crime. She suggests they won’t be poor too much longer. Costello describes herself as a “real writer.”

Selby is paying for a bundle of The London Reformer when Nikki (Alison Lintott) suggests prison is similar to boarding school. He assures her it’s much lovelier when Costello picks up a newspaper. He warns that they changed her writing. After voicing concern about Iris being embarrassed, she admits to wanting a drink. He reminds her of what wine does to her.

Richard Rain Dogs HBO BBC One

Gloria encourages Costello to continue working on her book. Konstantin orders her to get back on stage. When she refuses, he fires her. Richard burns the newspaper as they emerge from the Flesh Pot. He claims to have no idea what Sophie intended to do before inviting her for coffee. She accepts as the episode comes to an end.

 

Rain Dogs Review

Costello is back working for Konstantin at the Flesh Pot. She receives an offer to write an article for The London Reformer, only to be exploited. She goes for coffee with a The London Reformer photographer.

After much persuasion, Gloria’s father forgives her. A short time later, she lets him down again by having sex with Paul in the funeral home.

Selby attends a rehabilitation meeting as part of his probation. A sexual favor won’t exempt him from the group.

It’s such a shame the show isn’t going to be a hit. The script is well-written with creative one-liners. The show is a comedy with dramatic undertones. The episode deserves a 6.5.
