Population 11 Series 1 Episode 1 Recap

Outback UFO Tours – The series begins with a very short scene of what appears to be the alien abduction of a man later revealed as UFO Hunter, Hugo Drivas (Darren Gilshenan). The footage then flips over to Andy Pruden (Ben Feldman) who has fallen asleep at the wheel and headed straight for a head-on collision with a passing police car. Andy admonishes himself for his oversight but is completely unprepared for the awkward scenario that ensues with Sergeant Geraldine Walters (Katrina Milosevic). Although Geraldine turns her old-school breathalyzer check into a sexual act, she lets him off with a warning.

Andy continues on until he very shortly arrives in the little Outback town of Bidgeegud. After considering the buildings, he sees what resembles an aluminum warehouse. Little does he know, it is the town pub and base of the Outback UFO Tours. Despite the building being completely open, it appears to be abandoned until Valerie Hogarth (Genevieve Lemon) races up in what appears to be a modified street racer.

After offering him a beer, she turns her attention to Jimmy James (Tony Briggs), who was supposed to be watching the bar. Dressed as a pastor, he steps out from behind a curtain with Cedric (William Zappa) and says he can’t watch the bar and take confession at the same time. Andy’s interest in Hugo and the UFO Tour appears to shock them and leads to Andy learning that Hugo has been missing for several weeks. A visit to Hugo’s nearby mobile home doesn’t provide any answers.

A nearby advertisement soon leads to Andy learning that he’s in the Sundew Caravan and Campground. It is here that Andy meets Shoshanna (Karis Oka) and Charmaine Ling (Fiona) Chioi but neither can shine any light on the missing Hugo. Andy has several awkward run-ins with the locals as he continues his search into the night.

That night Andy returns to Hugo’s mobile home where he discovers a VHS tape stashed in the refrigerator with a “Play Me” note taped to it. Andy barely gets passed the introduction when an outside noise attracts his attention. Much to his surprise, he finds Jimmy and Cedric in the process of stealing a snowboard. Much to their surprise, Andy admits to being Hugo’s son.

After getting over their confusion, the three of them watch Hugo’s tape together, where he claims that if ever goes missing, he is likely in possession of the Azyarn Species. After a few seconds of what appears to be Hugo’s irrational rating, Andy stops the tape and claims that he’s dead. He doesn’t really explain what he means by this but asks Jimmy and Cedric to leave. When they leave, Andy (Alastair Bradman) has a quick memory of the dad Hugo left for Australia.

Andy spends the night on Hugo’s couch and is woken by a loud car with bright lights in the middle of the street, but doesn’t give it any more thought than that. The following day, he wakes to a call from Dom (Christopher Kirby), who seems to think that not finding Hugo means they are going to jail. Andy does his best to calm him before claiming that with 11 residents Hugo shouldn’t be too hard to track down.

Later that day, Hugo is bitten by a snake while putting up reward flyers around town. He passes out and wakes later, surrounded by some of the locals he met yesterday. They find it funny when he encourages them to call an ambulance after noticing his hand is twice its normal size. Noel Pinkus (Stephen Curry) tells him there’s nothing to worry about because the snake is a pet that had its venom euthanized years ago. It soon becomes apparent they are only interested in collecting the reward when they start shouting over each other to tell about the last time they saw Hugo. Sergeant Geraldine’s arrival puts an end to the dispute. Just as quickly she reveals that she wants to collect on the reward as well.  Although she offers a boot as evidence, he refuses to hand over any money. She cordons off Hugo’s house and has it designated as a crime scene, forcing him to leave.

Andy returns to the pub to rent a room. While doing so he not only learns about the car accident that claimed Valerie’s son’s life, but he learns from Cedric that most locals don’t drive at night due to the risks of hitting cattle or wild roaming animals. That night the vehicle returns and Andy attempts to follow it but after swerving to avoid a kangaroo, he gets stuck on the side of the road.

He continues his pursuit on foot and although the vehicle eventually stops, it is too far away too far away to tell what the driver is doing. He then notices a dog chewing on something on the ground. After scaring it away, the item is revealed to be a bloody boot. When he drops it and spins around, he’s knocked out with a shovel.

Population 11 Review

Is it just me, or did anyone else get Tourist Season 1 vibes during the opening sequence? Other than the raunchy comedy and horrible acting, I feel that this series could be something. The shorter runtime and enigmatic story all work in its favor. I’m still up in the air right now, but I am interested in seeing where this series could lead. For that, it at least deserves a 5 out of 10.
