As the episode begins, Ross (Aidan Turner) speaks with William Wickham (Anthony Calf) about Ned. Before too long, Ross finds himself in a carriage with Geoffrey Charles (Freddie Wise), Cecily (Lily Dodsworth-Evans), and Ralph (Peter Sullivan). Ross learns that the Hansons have been in Bristol. Ross asks Ralph why he is traveling to Truro again. They argue about slaves and Poldark’s own miners. He tells the couple that Ned (Vincent Regan) and Kitty (Kerri McLean) are likely planning their return to Honduras. Meanwhile, George Warleggan (Jack Farthing) asks for Elizabeth. He is in a panic and wonders when Elizabeth will come to him.

Ross makes it back and meets up with Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson). He learns that there have been troubles at home. He agrees to sit down and listen to the grievances of the locals. Geoffrey shows Cecily around town. They visit the wishing well and Cecily gives it a try. George preaches to Valentine (Woody Norman) and Cary (Pip Torrens) that the grounds should be searched for Elizabeth. Ross and the others meet up at his place for food. Cecily tells Geoffrey that it came true since she wished for cake. Ned seems worried that Cecily and her father might be spying on them.

Ross assures Ned and Kitty that they’ll be able to return to Honduras soon enough. Kitty is not hungry so it appears that she is getting sick. Prudie (Beatie Edney) catches Tess (Sofia Oxenham) eating some of the food and puts a stop to it. Valentine eats alone and listens to his father’s cries. The following day, the local kids arrive for their lessons with Morwenna (Ellise Chappell). Drake (Harry Richardson) admits it is good for the kids to have lessons together. This brings up John Conan. Morwenna explains that Lady Whitworth will not let him mix with the other children. Dwight (Luke Norris) pays a visit to Kitty as Ross heads into town.

Ross speaks with Tess in private and tells her not to betray Demelza’s true or she’ll have to deal with him. Dwight becomes suspicious that Kitty might be sick. He tells Caroline (Gabriella Wilde). He receives a letter from Cary asking for his help and leaves. When he does, Caroline becomes worried that he might not be able to keep Dwight’s attention. Sam (Tom York) says a prayer with the miners before Demelza and Zacky (Tristan Sturrock) hand out money. Dwight meets with Cary and offers to treat George but he demands free rein. Cary seems okay with it. Dwight agrees to remain discreet about the treatment.

Meanwhile, Ross meets with the locals and begins listening to their problems. Demelza goes to Drake’s house. Along the way, she spots Sam spending time with Rosina (Amelia Clarkson). She heads inside and speaks with Drake about Morwenna’s problems. Morwenna goes into town and spots her son. Cary gets a visit from Ralph and Cecily. They go inside and Cecily asks how long it was since George lost his wife. Morwenna spies on her son from a distance. At the pub, Ralph listens was Ned argues with Tess. When Ned leaves, Ralph calls Tess over. He gives her a drink and some money before telling her that he might have a task for her. Geoffrey meets with Cecily and learns that her father wants her to marry George.

Geoffrey tells her not to do that because he loves her. She accuses him of ruining their friendship and rushes off. During a ride through the woods, Ross runs into Valentine. The boy is guarding the woods all by himself. Ross tells Demelza that he is thinking about asking George to sell him Wheal Plenty. He realizes that George will likely refuse but he is going to dry anyway. They speak about Ned’s suspicions that someone might be spying on them before Tess enters with food. Later, Caroline learns that Dwight has been summoned by the mystery sufferer again. He tells her that she knows he cannot discuss his patients. He rides to George’s place and finds Ross there. Ross confesses he is there to make George and offer.

Dwight tells him that now would not be the time. Dwight doesn’t tell Ross what is going on as George stares down at them. Cary comes outside and says Ross couldn’t afford the mine. Ross tells him to name his price. Geoffrey Charles goes to his mother’s grave and Ross comes along a short time later. They speak about the history between Ross and Elizabeth. Ross insists that he made the right choice in the end. Geoffrey tells Ross about his trouble with Cecily. Ross realizes this is the reason Ralph has been hanging out in Truro. Drake watches as Morwenna leaves home and follows her. Dwight takes George to the cemetery.

He shows him Elizabeth’s tombstone and grave. Dwight explains that he is seeing Elizabeth in his memory and not in person. George says he would have loved Elizabeth with or without the child but she wanted it dearly. Dwight tries to convince George not to lay blame on the child. Drake finds out that Morwenna has been spying on her son. The boy spots her and Morwenna is forced to hide. He approaches her anyway and smiles. The boy does not remember her. Drake listens as Morwenna tells John she can be a friend of his. Drake says nothing about it even after they return home. Caroline tries to convince Dwight that they should not keep secrets from one another.

He believes otherwise since he is a physician. Later that night, Tess tells Ned about the rumors that there are no differences between masters and servants in the West Indies. Kitty insists she wishes that was true. Tess tries to put ideas in Ned’s head so Ross sends her away. Kitty’s stomach begins bothering her and Demelza checks on her a few moments later. Kitty insists that her husband is to blame. She eventually forces Kitty to get assistance from Dwight. We learn that Kitty is likely pregnant. She explains that she is worried because she has had so many miscarriages in the past. She cannot let Ned get his hopes up.

In the morning, Ross and Demelza speak about Cecily and Geoffrey Charles. Demelza wonders if George will have the mind to reopen Wheal Plenty. Ross realizes that there might be another option. He goes to Harris Pascoe (Richard Hope) and they share a good laugh. The price has been inflated twice the value. Harris explains that Ross would be risking everything and very little to gain. Ross asks if the bank would be willing to underwrite the purchase. Ross is told that he doesn’t have much to bring to the table. Dwight continues working with George. George remembers what Elizabeth said about her being afraid of the afraid. His was the last face she saw before she passed away.

George explains that he does not believe he will ever feel desire again. He confesses that the marriage is a business transaction and the lady will need to make the best of it. Cecily visits Demelza and learns that Geoffrey isn’t there. Cecily wants to know what type of person George is. She tells Cecily that George is powerful and wealthy. Demelza tells her that she did indeed marry for love. Demelza explains that she had made many mistakes but this one was the best one she ever did. Ralph meets with Tess to learn what she has found out about Ned. She has two others who are willing to set him off as long as they’re paid enough. Ralph believes he can send George running back to London too.

Ross continues speaking with Harris about the mine and Demelza’s thoughts. Ross intends to mortgage his entire estate to fund the purchase. Ross is convinced that it is worth the risk. A short time later, Ross finds Valentine hanging out by himself. The boy reminds him that he was told he could visit whenever he wanted. Demelza learns that Tess has gone into town and we see her getting the locals wound up about Wheal Plenty paying the worst wages. She says that at least those who worked were able to eat. She begins hyping up Ned and the others agree with her. Ned gets fired up and speaks with them. They encourage him to let George know about their plight. Demelza learns that Ross took Valentine to Morwenna’s place.

Ross prepares to take him home. George notices and becomes convinced that Ross is trying to steal his son. Dwight listens as George goes on and on about Ross trying to steal Elizabeth and his sons. Ross tells Demelza why he decided to take Valentine to the school. He also tells her about telling Elizabeth to have a child with George to secure the marriage. In the morning, Ross signs the paperwork for Harris who is worried that George might lose his wife for it. Demelza learns that Ned has decided to carry out a peaceful protest. Cary tells George that their lives will improve with a woman in their household. The protestors arrive outside a short time later.

Demelza lets Ross know just as Ned begins banging on the door. The others tell him to break the door down and he does. They storm in and Tess leads the way. Cary tries to prevent them from getting close to George. He emerges and tells them to leave before he has them shot. Ned goes after George on his own. Ned tries to speak some sense into him but George doesn’t want to hear it. George pulls out the gun and prepares to fire. He misses and George goes tumbling down the stairs. Ross arrives and helps George up. Ross makes a suggestion. He returns to the others and George arrives soon. He says he has been away in the north. He tells everyone that the closure of the mine was temporary.

Tess doesn’t want the others to believe it. The others try to go after George but Ned won’t let them. The leave a few moments later. George speaks with Ross and takes credit for calming the situation. He makes Ross leave a few moments later. Ross tells Demelza that it saved them their own estate. She disagrees with Ross and believes he thinks irrationally sometimes. She thinks he takes things for granted. They race back home. Cecily finds Geoffrey at the wishing well. She tells him that she came to complain. She confesses that she has feelings for him too and they share a kiss. The locals celebrate the opening of George’s mine.

Demelza tells Tess that is letting her go. She cannot let her stay after what happened today. She tells Tess to pack her things and go. Tess tells them that this isn’t going to be the last they see of her. William gets a note from an informant. It is about the mob led by Ned and Ross. It is questioned if the men can be trusted.

 

Poldark Review

This season of Poldark has been hit and miss. I cannot get into the Ned storyline. Vincent Regan is a good actor and all but the character is uninteresting to me. He is somewhat of an idiot too. Why can’t he just leave well enough alone? Ross has been very dumb this season too. I know he is a good doer and all but he is willing to throw everything away to please everyone else. I am nearly over both of them. George has been far more interesting this season.

I like the Carne brothers and the Enys couple too. The side stories are carrying the series at this point. The main storyline just doesn’t interest me. It is the last season and you have to watch it. I hope it gets better soon. This episode scores a 6.5 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of Poldark before you go. Sorry for any mistakes or errors above.
