Orphan Black: Echoes Season 1 Episode 2 Recap

Jules – The episode opens with Lucy (Krysten Ritter) holding Jules Anderson (Amanda Fix) at gunpoint and questioning what she knows. Jules continues to claim she doesn’t know anything and asks to be released. Lucy says there are too many coincidences with the lady outside Jules’ building for her to not know something. Jules tries to make a covert call to Neva Lee (Alexander Castillo) but that ends with Lucy taking the phone and demanding the passcode. While giving her the passcode, Jules manages to flee from the vehicle and a chase ensues.

Elsewhere, Kira Manning (Keeley Hawes) studies brain scans as she makes a call to Josh Tartakovich (Izad Etemadi) to question the accuracy of their machine. As soon as she ends the message, Uncle Felix (Jordan Gavaris) burst into the office, announcing a surprise visit.

At an AA meeting, PJ (Dayle McLeod) alludes that she might have relapsed when her hours at work got cut. She claims that she at least got a poem out of the event, which the meeting leader, Craig (Jonathan Whittaker) encourages her to share. After a few verses, Lucy interrupts and demands to speak with Craig. PJ happens to recognize her and asks why she hasn’t heard from her in a year. Lucy claims she had to leave town urgently before asking Craig to join her outside again. Reluctantly joining her, he tells Lucy that PJ never got over their relationship. Craig becomes frantic when he’s led into his office, where Jules is strapped to a chair.

Kira asks Felix if he’s in town because of Cosima (Tatiana Maslany). He denies it but later admits that Cosima is concerned about her. When he mentions her acting out of character, she claims to be extremely busy. He says that sometimes a breakthrough requires taking a break and asks her to join him at a club he recently heard about. It’s his mention of available street narcotics that persuades her. She claims she needs some to test a theory she’s been working on. When he asks how Lucas Manning (Jaeden Noel) is doing, she makes it clear that she isn’t thrilled with his philanthropic or religious beliefs.

Craig begins his interrogation of Jules by assuring her that no one is going to hurt her. Shortly after that, he learns her name and that she currently lives in Cambridge. She claims to have lost her memory in the car crash that killed her real parents but suspects she grew up in Florida until the accident. Her grandparents weren’t able to care for her, so she ended up with a foster family. Lucy’s attempts to convince Jules that they are clones fail.

Tom (Reed Diamond) escorts Emily (Tattiawna Jones) to a meeting with Paul Darros (James Hiroyuki Liao), who he describes as eccentric but brilliant. He also mentions how the entire property on which Darro’s home sits has been converted into a nature preserve. When they arrive and enter the home, they find two Tyvek suits waiting for them.

Lucy continues to convince Jules they are clones by pointing out their physical similarities. After showing her a forearm scar, Lucy uses a blue light pen to reveal stranger invisible lettering on her bicep. She becomes confused when Jules doesn’t have the markings.

Jack (Avan Jogia) visits Charlie (Zariella Langford) and learns that she’s still struggling with killing Lucy’s attacker. Jack attempts to comfort her by assuring her that she’ll never be forced to make that decision again.

Tom and Emily find Darros outside tending to several Hawkstail Tortoises. After Darros and Emily share their excitement to be working together, Darros asks Tom about his search for Lucy. Darros appears troubled when he learns that Lucy has kidnapped Jules. He insists on Dr. Manning not finding out. After asking for Emily’s opinion Darros agrees to Tom’s requests to use more “forceful” measures to apprehend Lucy.

Lucy and Craig debate what Jules really knows. When Jules interrupts them by referring to them as psychos and says she needs to piss, Craig says the two certainly share a certain charm. Lucy escorts her to the restroom. While standing guard outside, Lucy apologizes and Jules uses the time to undo the flushing device on the toilet. Upon exiting, she uses it to stab Lucy and flee. Lucy denies Craig’s offers to escort her to the ER and claims to have someone she can go to.

Jack meets with Tina (Eva Everett Irving) and shares what Charlie had to do to defend Lucy. She assures him they can stay at her place as long as needed before the doorbell interrupts them. The visitor is revealed to be Lucy. Jack patches her up in the bathroom where the sight of blood triggers part of a childhood memory.

When Felix and Kira arrive at the club, she receives a call from Tom about not having located Lucy. She accuses him of not looking hard enough before ordering him to phone her in the morning.

Jules has managed to make it back to the apartment where she is immediately interrogated by James (Adam Kenneth Wilson) about missing school. Instead of revealing the truth, she claims to have been at a local tea shop and gives him a thermos full of Kombucha. She gets him to agree to not share the information with Neva before rushing off to join Wes (Liam Diaz) in their shared bedroom. Wes is just finishing up a comedy post when she enters and shares news of the kidnapping. She also convinces him to keep the news hidden from Neva by claiming that she’d only get the cops involved. When Wes suggests that calling the cops might be a good thing, she reminds him that she’s trying to run an illegal narcotics business.

At the club, Kira and Felix discuss his latest art show before debating how she might score street-grade cocaine for her experiment. She soon notices another patron at the bar who’s continually rubbing his nose. After making a very awkward approach, Felix offers to get the coke for her.

Charlie attempts a conversation with Lucy as she prepares to leave, but Jack and Tina intervene with the allure of Tina’s vintage Dungeons & Dragons card collection. Once alone with Jack, Lucy isn’t forthcoming until he threatens to take Charlie and leave. She asks him to take a ride and takes him to a facility where she suspects she was created. After attempting to explain what she knows, she suspects that he doesn’t believe her. He claims he needs time to process. She agrees it’s a lot to process and assures him everything she did and will do is to ensure that they can be together.

After scoring the coke, Kira and Felix encounter Lucas. Felix admits to calling him before jokingly chiding him about joining a cult. He denies the accusation and claims to have met some good people. He adds that he’s even planning on bringing one to the blood drive tomorrow. A call from the lab draws Kira away. Once alone, Lucas claims his mother isn’t sleeping and admits that he’s worried something is going on. Felix promises he will get it out of her.

While scrolling through old family photos in her room, Jules eavesdrops on an argument between James and Neva. James claims that Jules doesn’t see him as a father figure and he doesn’t know if he’ll ever think of her as his own. Neva reminds him that relationships take work.

Felix escorts Kira back to her office, where he convinces her to share her fears about a new project. She claims it’s making her doubt if she really is the good person that she’s tried to be her entire life. He encourages her to cut herself some slack.

Neva tries to relate to Jules by sharing how hard things were for her when she came to the US and didn’t know a word of English. This only further upsets Jules who claims their problems are nothing alike. She says there will always be things about her childhood she doesn’t know. Neva says she doesn’t need to know everything about Jules to see how great she is.

While attempting to get into Neva’s offices, Lucy is stopped by the automated facial security. The software recognizes her as Jules Lee and lets her pass but sends Neva a mobile alert. Neva phones security to alert them of the error. This nearly gets Lucy busted later while she’s snooping around in Neva’s office. Lucy takes a photo of the family posing outside Beacon Bayview Medical Hospital.

Tom informs Mr. Darros that Jules is safely back home and they just got a solid lead on Lucy. Kira is testing her cocaine theory when Josh finally returns her call. She asks where he’s been, but noticing the dead rat, he demands they meet immediately. Lucy meets with Jack, who assures her that he believes her. He says her claims are too crazy to not be true and he knows what it’s like to have someone walk out on you. Later that evening, Jules video chats with her grandpa about the scar on her arm. He assures her she got it when he was teaching her to ride a bike. Once they say their goodbyes, it’s revealed that the entire grandpa scene was staged.

Orphan Black Echoes Review

I had high hopes for this series but was sadly disappointed. I’d give it a 5 out of 10 but it was such a huge disappointment. Of all that character to bring back, Felix? It was refreshing to see him as an older man and his interest in the cloning industry is intriguing, but he was the worst possible option for a return character. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a boisterous actor, but hopefully, he’ll only get a 1 episode run. Krysten Ritter is also horrendous and there is no hope for Amanda Fix. It could be the script more than the actors, so I’m not completely blaming the actors.
