As the fifth episode of No Escape begins, Lana (Abigail Lawrie) and Kitty (Rhianne Barreto) have Christmas dinner with their mother who asks Kitty to confess first. Kitty wakes up from the nightmare next to Michelle (Colette Dalal Tchantcho). When Michelle checks on her, Kitty insists she is fine. They kiss before hearing a knock at the door. Aaron (Jay Ryan) apologizes to Michelle and claims all this bad stuff is his fault. Heinrich (Elmo Anton Stratz) is with him and both are incredibly stoned. Michelle gets Denny to help while Kitty tries to get Aaron up. Denny (Sean Keenan) gets up and takes his brother to bed.

Michelle takes the wheel and tries to figure out where they are. Denny and Lana come out to join them. Michelle says there is no wind so they cannot sail. Heinrich tells Kitty that she is cursed. He claims the Ketamine is for his knee. Michelle asks if Aaron has a bad knee as well. She complains that Aaron wasted most of the fuel going in the wrong direction. Denny thinks they can use the last of the fuel to find some wind, but Michelle calls that too risky because they could be stranded with nothing. They argue about whether they should wait for wind or use the fuel. Michelle is adamant they’re going to wait for wind unless Aaron wakes up and decides differently.

Denny relents and says fine. Michelle takes the Ketamine from Heinrich. Someone seems to be spying on Lana. After the intro, Michelle asks Kitty to check the water and food supplies while she looks at the weather. When Kitty is alone, she remembers her mother telling her to confess over and over. Kitty takes some of the Ketamine and puts the bottle in her pocket. Denny says the patch isn’t pretty although it should hold. Lana asks him about the plan. Denny is worried about Aaron because he is an addict. When he falls off the wagon, things get very bad. Denny doesn’t want to talk about the plan to sell the diamonds. He asks if Kitty is okay. Lana suggests asking her himself. When Denny checks on Kitty, she gives him a drink.

Denny believes they’re both on Lana’s crap list. He insists there are no hard feelings for Kitty voting him off. Kitty shares the Ketamine with Denny. Lana believes she hears someone on the yacht. Joseph (Narayan David Hecter) grabs her from behind and tells her not to scream. In the present, Denny says they decided to go straight home after Palau, but the terrorists must’ve tracked them. By the time they spotted them, they couldn’t outrun them. Aaron told everyone to hide while he got the tender ready, but they slit his throat before he could get there. Then, they searched the boat and found the others. Denny confesses that he was a coward. He stayed hidden even when he heard the shots.

When he came back up, the boat was empty and all the bodies were in the water. He gunned it out of there. Denny says there were too many of them. He is sorry he couldn’t save her. Lana begins freaking out as she says she needs to go. Denny tries to follow her out because she is upset. When Lana steps outside, she is harassed by the press so she goes back inside. Denny attempts to calm her. Lana says Joseph was right. In the past, Joseph tells Lana how he managed to get back on the boat. He pleads with her not to tell the others because they’ll kill him. Lana tells him to hide in her cabin. Kitty continues drinking with Denny and Heinrich. Michelle walks out and finds out what is going on. They try to convince Michelle to join them since they have nothing else to do.

She does and they party through the night. Lana doesn’t think Joseph can make it to Palau without Aaron seeing him. He admits he came back for her because he was worried about her. Joseph says the others only care about themselves, but he thinks Lana is different. The tragedy is that she can’t see she is a good person. Joseph knows he shouldn’t have come and he has no right to ask her for help. Michelle has to check on Kitty who might’ve had too much. Heinrich joins them and begins making out with Michelle while Kitty laughs. Michelle says they shouldn’t leave anyone out so Heinrich kisses Denny. Then, Denny says he thinks it is his bedtime. He asks them to turn the music off because Aaron will be cranky when he gets up.

Denny knocks on Lana’s door to say he might need backup up there. He apologizes for earlier and admits he was a little freaked out by Aaron. Joseph hides as Denny tells Lana that he wants to be with her. Lana claims she is still with him and still has his back. She manages to get rid of him. Once they’re alone again, Joseph tells Lana she isn’t the first girl Denny has done this with. He accuses her of being like the rest of them. Kitty tries to make out with Michelle until she sees her mom’s face and runs for Lana. She is shocked when she sees Joseph in Lana’s room. Soon, the others become aware of his presence and begin calling for Aaron. Moments later, Aaron enters with his gun and asks Joseph where he has been hiding.

Aaron interrogations him while Joseph doesn’t say anything. Once Aaron puts the gun to his head, Joseph says he is there because he is guilty too. He is there because they can’t run away forever. Joseph thinks they should hand themselves in to the authorities in Palau. He believes Aaron has the greatest need for absolution because the boy is not the first ghost to haunt him. When he asks if her name was Helen, Aaron gets mad and throws him to the floor. He locks Joseph in a room and says he stays there until they reach Palau. Aaron threatens to shoot anyone who tries to let him out. He tells Lana to just walk away, but she opens the door. Joseph runs out, hits Aaron, and grabs the gun.

He tells everyone they’re going to jail before running to contact others. As Joseph tries to use the radio, Aaron unplugs the cord cutting off the power. He tells the others that they need to find Joseph. Kitty begins freaking out again and thinking she sees her mother, but it is Lana trying to check on her. Kitty wants to confess because she is a bad person. Lana says they can get out, but she needs to find Joseph. Seconds later, Joseph sneaks over to Kitty to tell her they’re all guilty. She ends up pushing him. Kitty wakes up when she hears the others yelling for Joseph. They’re worried that Joseph is in the water, but they can’t see him anywhere now. Michelle tells Denny to get the tender ready before she checks on Aaron. Heinrich tries to get the flare.

In the morning, Denny and Aaron ride on the tender and haven’t found Joseph. Once they get back to The Blue, Michelle says they need to talk about what happens now. Denny says he wasn’t wearing a lifejacket so he probably wasn’t going to survive this long. Lana doesn’t want to leave him. Michelle says he shouldn’t have been there. Aaron says he wasn’t officially since he wasn’t on the manifest. According to the logbook, they left Joseph in the Philippines. Lana argues that they can’t pretend he didn’t exist and should do something. She wants to vote on it, but the others don’t think that is wise. Denny asks Aaron if there is something. Aaron says they should listen to Michelle and use the wind. He asks Michelle to put the gun where he can’t find it.

Denny continues hanging out with Lana or Emma in the present. She questions why he is being so nice when he should hate her after what she did. Denny tells her it is in the past and he could never hate her. Lana suggests telling the police everything so it might help them catch those responsible. Denny says he knows because Kitty told him. The police asked about the fifth person on The Blue, but he gave them a different name. They won’t find out what she did back in the UK. She said she wanted Emma to be free and happy. On The Blue, Denny checks on Kitty who begins asking about Joseph. Denny asks what she remembers about what happened up there before Kitty questions if she did something.

Denny suggests it is not the first time it’s happened. Kitty asks if she killed Joseph. Denny seems to nod before saying he won’t tell anyone. In the present, Denny walks outside to speak to the press. Reyes tells Emma that he tells quite the story. Reyes says all of the bullets were shot from a small-bore revolver Smith and Wesson. Reyes admits criminals from his country prefer automatic weapons. He wonders if Denny is lying. Denny returns before Emma can say anything. Denny and Emma leave together. In the car, Denny tells her that his parents are cool with her staying for as long as she likes. Emma says he must’ve been so scared. Denny admits he couldn’t stop seeing them. He wouldn’t know what to do if she wasn’t there.

 

No Escape Review

While the core story of No Escape remains interesting, this episode seemed to be really sluggish and slow. Even if the show was binge-watched, it’d probably be easy to lose interest at points because it feels like it is going nowhere sometimes. It didn’t help that more than half of the episode was spent on partying without really pushing the story forward.

The performances are okay for the most part, but the characters can be shallow and somewhat illogical. Again, the series and story would’ve been far more effective if it had been sped up considerably. It is also difficult to genuinely care about any of the characters since most of them are so unlikeable.

Depending on how the series ends and how effective the conclusion is, the series may still be a decent binge.
