As the episode begins, Karl (Eoin Macken) puts out the fire. Thale (Sam Strike) continues on his path of destruction. Melantha (Jodie Turner-Smith) joins Karl. She learns that Murphy (Phillip Rhys) is barely alive. Lommie (Maya Eshet) is told to get to her quarters. She imagines that she hears something. Thale appears behind her. He tells her that he has been waiting for her and he just wants to talk. We see a vision of Lommie attacking a man. Thale tells her that she is more interesting that he imagined. Lommie tells him how to get to the domes. They both promise to be quiet about what they saw. Murphy is stable, but he has horrible burns all over his body. He has been put into a coma to control the pain. Eris (David Ajala) arrives and asks Agatha (Gretchen Mol) if Thale is responsible.

She denies it. Karl defends Agatha and Thale. Roy Eris is told that someone set Thale free and they need to be hunting for that person. Eris tells Karl that the L1 is a complication he cannot afford. Karl tells Mel to get Lommie. They’re going to need her. Agatha goes on the hunt for Thale. She finds blood on the grown and hears something eerie nearby. She calls out for Thale. A man stumbles towards Agatha with bloody eyes. He tells her that Thale was in his head. After the intro, Lommie messes with her port. Mel visits and stops her. Lommie tells Mel that there is something in the computer. She explains that whatever it was wanted her death. Mel comforts her. Mel notices that her port is bleeding.

Lommie admits that the wound is self-inflicted. Lommie imagines her father coughing and tied to a chair in front of her. He laughs, but Mel sees nothing of the sort. Hartley (Youssef Kerkour) meets with Agatha and learns about the new attack. Agatha tells Karl that Thale is showing restraint. She also believes she can find him. As they prepare to encounter him, Agatha reminds Karl to be honest and direct. Karl apologizes for making the decision to put Thale under. Thale is asked about the fire. Hartley and the others arrive. They prepare to attack. Karl tries to stop them, but he is knocked unconscious. Eris speaks with Auggie (Brian F. O’Byrne). Auggie suggests turning back. Eris refuses. Hartley manages to shoot Thale.

It turns out that he shot his own man. Hartley is shocked. The attack team decides to fall back. Thale gets the rifle. Eris and Karl argue about Thale’s future. Karl claims he is going to prove that the L1 is innocent. Hartley decides to get a mobile robot. Thale runs into a woman surrounded by bees. The woman gets rid of the bees so they can chat. Thale takes the woman prisoner. Karl continues hearing things throughout the ship. He hears his daughter calling for him. He spots her and runs after her. Skye turns around and speaks to him. They speak about the friendship bracelet. He hugs her, but she isn’t there. Skye tells him that he doesn’t know anything. Karl visits Rowan (Angus Sampson).

 

Karl confesses he doesn’t think they’ll even make it to Volcryn the way things are going. He suggests sending White Rabbit, because he doesn’t trust Eris. He tells Rowan to get Mel and make the necessary adjustments. Agatha and Karl grab Murphy. Auggie catches Lommie trying to mess with the computer. She claims that they need to disconnect the memory from the main system. She wants to access Murphy’s memories. Auggie helps. He tells Karl that he better work fast. Mel and Rowan work together. Rowan hopes that White Rabbit will send them back pictures of the Volcryn. The woman speaks with Thale about his powers. She tells him that she is Tessia (Miranda Raison). Tessia explains that she is against the way they treat L1s.

Murphy is set up for playback. Karl and the others work to record his memory. Auggie records the feed. Murphy gets the gun from Hartley. We see that Thale did start the fire. White Rabbit is launched into space. Mel and Rowan agree to make real contact. Mel speaks with Eris. She tells Roy that Karl is his partner and they need to trust each other. Eris tells her that the mission faces a threat that she cannot understand. Something goes wrong with the mobile robot. Eris speaks with Karl about the domes and his mother. Eris asks Karl how they can prevent the crew from learning what Thale did. He agrees to make a ship wide announcement claiming that Thale is innocent. He agrees to adjust Murphy’s memories accordingly.

Thale hears the announcement. Eris speaks with Auggie. They speak about Roy’s mother. Roy tells Eris to destroy the footage. Something takes control of the robot and rewrites the code. The robot begins to move. Hartley’s partner is killed. He is shot himself. The robot gets the woman too. Agatha prepares to speak with Thale. She tells him that nobody is going to hurt him. Karl tells Thale that he promised he would help him. Thale doesn’t want any more drugs. He believes he can keep his powers under control. Lommie visits Mel. Mel tells her that Karl needs her to confirm the probe’s trajectory. Mel gives her encouragement to go back into the system. Lommie enters the machine.

Eris visits the lab and learns about the robot’s destruction. Hartley isn’t dead. The robot has escaped. Karl speaks with Joy (Zoe Tapper). She asks him about the bracelet. Joy speaks about her therapy. She admits she cannot feel sadness for something she doesn’t remember. Joy suggests that Skye would still be alive if it wasn’t for them. She cannot remember what they did wrong though. Roy tells Karl that the mission lab needs maintenance. Roy confesses that he hasn’t been totally honest about the chaos on the ship. A force is attempting to stop the mission. Roy refuses to say more. Roy deactivates the robot. He tells someone or something that it has gone too far this time.

 

Nightflyers Review

I am still not totally blown away by Nightflyers. I am not a big fan of the science fiction stuff anyway. Still, I find it tolerable. In fact, it isn’t horrible. At the very least, it keeps me interested. I am definitely eager to find out what is going on with the ship. The Thale character is the most alluring. Let me just say this. Nightflyers is good enough to keep me sticking around. For that, the episode scores a 7.5 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of Nightflyers now.
