The Diamond Feathers – Ivy (Cathy Belton) tends to William ‘The Duke’ Wellington (Stuart Martin) while he recovers. Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips) comes in and learns her things are on the table. She asks about William and urges him to rest. Eliza ends up touching William’s hand before saying she can’t laze around like him. Once Eliza makes it to the office, Clarence (Paul Bazely) surprises her by revealing Patrick Nash (Felix Scott) is back. In private, Nash complains that his business is barely surviving. Eliza argues it isn’t her fault his men didn’t want to work for a woman. She insists things are starting to move in the right direction. Nash is adamant he is staying in London until the ship is back on course.

After the intro, Clarence promises he didn’t ask Nash to return although he did provide him progress reports. Nash is going to the Fat Goose because it is patronized by the Metropolitan Police, many journalists, and lawyers of the Royal Courts of Justice. Eliza reveals she has a meeting with a client who has money and influence. Nash tags along when they speak to Jack Carter (Oliver Bennett) and his wife Maisie Carter (Emma Edmondson). They talk about the aristocracy and how they don’t like new money. Jack doesn’t care about them as long as the wives treat Maisie right. He believes they’re stuck-up snobs. Stafford offers tea. He explains they hosted a charity fundraiser for a committee Maisie belongs to called The Ladies of the Mayfair Benevolent Society.

They were robbed of Admiral Nelson’s diamond feather two hours in. Jack bought it at auction because Nelson has always been a hero of his. Nash says they’ll need a guest list and the names of the staff working that night. Jack is convinced it was one of the guests. He promises to pay double their fee when they find the thief. Back at the office, Eliza suggests Nash apologizes although he refuses to admit to it. She learns Nash’s old men have been writing to him. Clarence gets them back on track so they can focus on the case. Nash asks him to bring over the contract when it is finished. He tells Eliza he is only there to help. Eliza tries to learn more about the guests. William joins her and asks about her day. He heard about Nash from Oliver Fitzroy (Evan McCabe).

William is in no rush to go back to work because the whole place is falling apart. He’s even considered not going back at all. The incident has made him realize there are other things to consider including the future. William remembers they first met in the kitchen. Ivy interrupts complaining about her mother. In the morning, Eliza tells Nash she may have found something interesting about one of the guests. He asks about the background checks she did on Jack Carter. Nash explains he bought his textile factories with the profits from his original business. Jack is from a notorious crime family in the North of England. Nash complains that she didn’t do her due diligence. He sent a telegram to Jack saying they couldn’t take his case.

Jack Carter storms in to say he promised Maisie he would deal with this in a calm, civilized manner. He is adamant that they will take his case and find his jewel. If they can’t, Jack will hold them personally responsible. He says they’ll do it for free as compensation for the insult of his character. Once Jack leaves, Nash says they need to find the thief. Eliza says Admiral Nelson’s relatives put the feather up for auction reluctantly last year. When she was going through the guest list, she noticed the name Lord Fallon. He and his wife are patrons of a charity that helps retired sailors from the Royal Navy. Lord Fallon (Simon Thorp) has a link to Admiral Horatio Nelson so he is Nelson’s cousin. Eliza and Patrick visit him while pretending to be patrons of the arts. Patrick tells them that Mrs. and Mr. Carter are business acquaintances.

Lady Emily Fallon (Emily Bowker) says Jack made a fool of herself and her husband is no better. Eliza notices a red mark on Emily’s neck. Eliza and Nash ask them about the feather which is practically a family heirloom. Mr. Fallon thinks he knows who stole it. He blames Baroness Weichmann because she is riddled with debts. Outside, Eliza blames Mr. Fallon for the bruises on Emily’s neck. Ivy and Oliver Fitzroy watch William. Oliver admits it is an important day because he is going to the American Embassy and wants the secondment more than anything. He likes the idea of being in New York. Oliver wants William to listen to his speech. Eliza and Nash visit Weichmann who is selling her property. Eliza mentions Maisie Carter. Before they can get answers, a guest arrives for Baroness Weichmann.

In private, Eliza tells Nash the man is Mr. Gibson (Paul Murray) and he is a dealer in stolen art and jewelry. At the office, they tell Clarence to find out about the man. They receive a letter claiming the diamond feather can be found in Lord Fallon’s writing desk. Later, Oliver visits William to complain about not getting the position. He says it could’ve been a fresh start in New York because no one would’ve known him or his father. They’re looking for someone with more experience such as William. Before Oliver leaves, William tells him he is a good copper. Ivy tells William he’d be a good father. Ivy reminds him that life is short so he shouldn’t waste it. She suspects she knows why it ended with Arabella and thinks it’d be a good time to tell her. William asks who. Nash bribes one of the maids so they can access the Fallon house.

Eliza doesn’t think it will be that easy. She asks what Nash’s men said in the letters but he refuses to tell her. Nash agrees it wasn’t her fault. He blames himself for leaving her in charge. Once the Fallons leave, they sneak inside to look in Mr. Fallon’s desk. Eliza admits to dismissing one of his men although Nash says they would’ve left anyway. They hear someone coming so they have to hide. They see someone looking through the desk before leaving. Eliza and Nash leave believing someone else may have the diamond feather now. In the morning, William tells Eliza he wanted to speak to her. She mentions her client causing him to worry she is in danger. Eliza leaves in a hurry to avoid talking about it. At the office, Clarence comes up with a list of dealers who deal in stolen luxury goods.

He has found nothing on Gibson, but Eliza believes she knows where to find him. She tracks him down.

Gibson denies knowing Baroness Weichmann until Scarlet says she saw them together. She says Weichmann wants him to sell a stolen artifact. He assures her that all his items for sale are genuine. She claims The Duke said he delves into stolen goods. He admits to paying Weichmann to bring him wealthy clients, with items to sell unknowingly to their husbands. He tells her that he is scheduled to meet Emily later today.

Nash and Scarlet return to the office to find Maisie and Jack waiting for an update on their case. Nash vows to contact them if anything changes. After Stafford escorts Maisie to the carriage, Jack says his family is teasing him about the theft. He gives them 24 hours to give him names and addresses.

The Duke struggles to express his feelings for Scarlet in a letter. Eventually, he confesses to love her. Elsewhere, Gibson informs Nash and Scarlet that Emily is looking to sell Admiral Nelson’s diamond feather to pay for a divorce. Later, Scarlet questions if Lord Fallon stole it from Jack and now, Emily stole it from him. Clarence tells them that Emily booked the Marlborough Suite at the Brabham Hotel paid for by Jack. She suggests Emily and Jack are having an affair.

The Duke prepares to give Scarlet his letter when Clarence barges in with a message from Gibson regarding a meeting at 4pm. Scarlet promises The Duke that she will be ready for dinner by 8pm before rushing out the door. He places his letter on her desk. A flashback of Arabella Acaster (Sophie Robertson) warning him that Scarlet’s ambition will outweigh her feelings for him. He retrieves the letter.

Brabham Hotel – Emily enters her suite to find Scarlet and Nash waiting to confront her about the diamond feather. She denies the allegation until Nash shows her the piece when Maisie bursts into the room. Later, Emily says they met through the Mayfair Ladies’ Society and discovered they were unhappy in their marriages. Maisie claims Lord Fallon beats Emily when he gets drunk. She admits to stealing the diamond feather to get back at Jack for forcing her to move to London. Emily tells them that Maisie accidentally put the jewel in Lord Fallon’s desk. Maisie says she was hoping Jack would take care of Fallon so Emily would not need to divorce. Not wanting the guilt of Lord Fallon’s death, Emily stole it back. Maisie voices concern about what Jack will do to them. Later, Nash and Scarlet discuss the best way to deal with Jack.

Nash and Scarlet return the diamond feather to Jack but refuse to share the details of the case with him. Jack demands answers. Scarlet threatens to release information connecting him to the disappearance of several people if they are harmed. He assures her if the police knew, he would already be in prison. She claims the intel came from the guests at his party. She says his intention to move to London to mingle with the elite like Admiral Nelson will be impossible if they learn the truth about him. She agrees to keep his secret for double their normal fee. He shakes his head in agreement.

Nash, Scarlet, and Clarence drink to their success. Nash says it is a pity his men didn’t her as a remarkable woman and exceptional detective. He suggests they start over from scratch. They clink glasses when she realizes the time. A short time later, she rushes home to find The Duke’s letter. He enters the room and informs her of his decision to take a temporary position in New York. He confesses to love her and refuses to be around her without being with her. They kiss before he walks out the door. She watches as his carriage pulls away. The episode ends.

 

Miss Scarlet & The Duke Review

The episode reveals a different side of The Duke. He is gentle, vulnerable, and finally willing to pour his heart out to Scarlet. While this may draw some criticism, I never wanted to see them as a couple. I felt he treated her coldly and harshly when she sought his help in a case. I don’t believe this segment is enough to convince me to change my mind.

It would be a shame if everyone didn’t take the opportunity to watch this extraordinarily tremendous series. It is by far the best I have seen in a long time.
