Mammals Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

The episode begins with Amandine Buckingham (Melia Kreiling) assuring Jamie Buckingham (James Corden) that they’ll miss the sunset. When he suggests speeding up, she asks if he’s seen the roads. He assures her that lying at the bottom of the cliff would be the best way to go. She warns him to hold on before laying down on the accelerator.

Amandine asks if he had a choice would he want to be with her or another woman. After teasingly choosing people they’d rather be with than each other, she feels their baby kick. Jamie questions if their son will like them. She suggests he’ll initially like them and them hate then before hopefully, liking them again.

While looking for a cellular signal to schedule a deep tissue massage, Jamie spots a whale. He gets a glance of Sir Tom Jones (as self) a short distance away before rushing back inside. Amandine informs him that she’s bleeding.

As the medical staff pushes Amandine into the emergency room, Jamie assures her, it’ll be all right. She tells him that it doesn’t feel like it. After the doctor (Tracy Anne Green) says only patients in the emergency room, he watches as his wife disappears around a corner.

At the hospital, Jamie asks Amandine how she’s feeling. She suggests thinking of it as a good thing because he’ll never hate them. He admits to investing six hours last night researching whales and Tom Jones. While handing her phone to him, she says they need to inform everyone. When he tells her that he prayed in the car park, she reminds him of his not believing in God. He claims to have told God that he couldn’t love her more than him.

Jeff Wilson (Colin Morgan) tells Lue (Sally Hawkins) during a school project about octopuses, he said “testicles” instead of “tentacles.” When she doesn’t respond, he asks if she’d like some tea.

Jamie informs Lue of their miscarriage. While walking back to the cabin, a text that reads, “Whattup sexy” from Paul pops on Amandine’s cellphone. He scrolls up to see a series of intimate messages passed between Paul and Amandine when Tom approaches. As Tom raves about the resort, Jamie vomits. Jamie says Tom’s name before rushing back to the cabin.

Mammals Synopsis

While at a resort to celebrate their anniversary, Amandine and James lose their baby. Amandine gave James her phone to notify their friends and family. A text from Paul unveiled an affair that Jamie wanted to know more about.

In the meantime, Amandine continued as if nothing was out of the ordinary with their relationship. At their baby’s memorial service, she told Jamie that she loved him and wanted many more babies together.

Jamie kept his knowledge of Amandine’s affair to himself while he gathered evidence for when he confronted Paul.

Lue’s inattentive behavior has become a concern for Jeff. He turned to Jamie for advice but unfortunately, received the same response.

Jamie paid Paul a surprise visit to demand he confesses his affair with Amandine. When Jamie threatened to tell Wendy about the affair, Paul pretended to not be Paul.

Mammals Review

I start out by saying the soundtrack’s great but compatibility can be questioned.

A rustic cabin on a hilltop, beautiful sandy beaches, breathtaking sunsets, and picturesque views as far as the eye can see are the ideal backdrop for the show.

The cinematography, including color, composition, and lighting, is spot-on. Even the night scenes are clearly visible, which is becoming more of a rarity these days.

The dialogue is cringeworthy at times. The F-words are unnecessary and off-putting. It’s difficult to take the characters seriously when they constantly drop the f-bomb.

The episode deserves a 6. Get more Mammals recaps here. Support Reel Mockery by clicking the link.
