Liar Season 2 Finale Recap

At the beginning of the episode, Oliver Graham (Sam Spruell) meets with Andrew Earlham (Ioan Gruffudd) at the shipping container. Oliver is given a thumb drive containing the medical records belonging to DS Rory Maxwell’s son Greg (Jack Colgrave Hirst). Andrew says that he took precautions when Laura (Joanne Froggatt) accused him. He says the record show that Greg frequently uses cocaine. Oliver doesn’t want to blackmail a police officer but Andrew says they need all of the help they can get. Oliver reminds him that there is no we. It is only Andrew trying to help himself. Oliver doesn’t want to cooperate so Andrew says he has put measures in place to ensure Oliver’s take will be released if something happens to him.

Oliver pins him against the wall and says they’re not friends. Next, Laura and Katy (Zoe Tapper) visit the motel and ask about Oliver but he checked out this morning. They find out that a young teenager named Luke had visited so they go to his house immediately. Luke Earlham (Jamie Flatters) goes to the garden so he can finish burning his father’s belongings. They ask Luke about Oliver and say they believe he is trying to frame Laura. Luke explains he got a call from the guy and he met with him so they could speak about Andrew. When Luke went to the motel, nobody was there and he found that odd. He claims he doesn’t have a name for the man. Laura tries to cheer Luke up and encourage him to move past his father’s troubles.

When they leave, Luke calls Oliver to tell him about the visit. Oliver tells Luke to stay focused on what they’re trying to achieve before he steps into the Mandrake Primary School. Next, Laura tells Katy that she doesn’t believe Luke so they sit around and watch his place. Katy also suggests that Luke might’ve killed his father. Luke leavers with a man so they decide to sneak inside. Laura quickly finds a key hidden under a gnome before going inside and checking the files Luke was burning. They find a book with a picture of Oliver and his name. Oliver returns to Andrew and receives orders to pick up Andrew’s vehicle from the hospital. Andrew says this is all that is left.

Oliver goes to the hospital and gets the key. On his way out, he learns that Luke has been discharged. Laura calls Vanessa (Shelley Conn) and asks for her assistance. Laura says she needs to speak with him face to face while Vanessa sits down with Karen Renton (Katherine Kelly). Oliver returns to the shipping container and tells Answer about his son being alive. Karen visits Luke at home to ask him about the phone call before his father died. The call was traced to a phone that has been stolen. Luke pretends he doesn’t know anything about it but Karen wonders if he met with his father. We jump back and Luke meets with Andrew but it isn’t a happy reunion. Luke ridicules his father for lying and raping women.

Andrew hands him the knife and Luke grabs it. Back in the present, Luke tells Karen that his father is gone and the world is better off. Laura and Katy visit Oliver at work and confront him. Oliver isn’t willing to back down. He says he isn’t going to fold to Laura’s threats. When they leave, Oliver calls Greg and threatens to release the medical records. However, Greg says that he has come clean about everything. Rory (Danny Webb) takes the phone and says the same. The call has been recorded and Rory says it is time to find out what Oliver is made of.

She wants to know about Luke and the meeting between them. Oliver meets with him and tells him about his relationship with his father. He tells Luke that Andrew said there was another recording and his mother was on it. This convinces Luke to return home and search for the recording. Luke returned home, found the recording, and turned it into authorities. Oliver asks for a solicitor before being arrested for the murder of Andrew. After that, Katy tells Laura that everything will get better with time.

Vanessa visits Rory and says the charges against Laura have been dropped. Rory knows he did the right thing but he was too late so he doesn’t know how much time he’ll serve. He admits he can’t say he wouldn’t do it again since his son begged him to help. Karen meets with Laura and they go for a stroll together. Karen believes she knows what happened to Andrew. She thinks Oliver killed him because of the blackmail recording. After that, we see Laura kayaking and Oliver and Andrew arriving nearby. Oliver looks for Laura’s car while Andrew tampers with her bag. He puts drugs in her water bottle and gets the key to her car. Oliver cannot find her vehicle though. Andrew is adamant that they need both vehicles to be parked at the shipping container or their plan won’t work.

Andrew finishes and returns to his vehicle. Laura makes it back and goes to her back for a drink. Andrew checks on her and finds her on the ground. He tried to take advantage of her but she fights back. She eventually gets away and makes a run for it. He chases her to a foggy area before she hides under a footbridge. He grabs the knife and speaks to her. When he walks away, she climbs from the bridge and runs for it again. Andrew finds her and they begin fighting once again. She gets the knife and slashes his throat several times. Oliver returns and finds the car key while Karen tells Laura about the evidence. We see that Oliver planted the car key in Laura’s nightstand.

Karen says Laura should’ve called the police when whatever happened between her and Andrew on the marshes. Laura admits she can’t trust the police after everything she went through. She says bad things happen and you have to deal with them immediately sometimes. Karen says it is no small thing to kill someone. If she had killed her ex, a woman would still be alive today. She wonders how Laura lives with those issues. She replies that she has to. Luke leaves in a taxi while Oliver sits in jail. Laura tells Karen about the lives Andrew ruined and how they’ll have to continue on. Karen says she is stepping off of the case since she thinks it is done.

She says goodbye before leaving. Later one night, Laura meets with Ian Davis (Kieran Bew) for dinner. They chat about Laura and everything she has been through. Ian says it is okay. He explains he didn’t tell Laura what he did because it is sometimes okay not to know everything. He says it is easier to start again sometimes and act like it never happened. They agree to start over and pretend they’ve just met.

Liar Review

We should’ve expected this. This season of Liar has been one of the most disappointing shows I’ve watched in a few months. There wasn’t much to like about it. The acting from some of the main actors and actresses was shaky at best and that includes Katherine Kelly. The writing wasn’t much better. The entire season was a complete waste considering Laura was the killer anyway.

What was the point? They should’ve ended the show after last season instead of unnecessarily dragging it on for another season. I won’t be the only one disappointed with it. I’ll say that Sam Spruell was the standout here though. Oliver was likely the most interesting character and Sam Spruell acted it exceptionally well. As for everything else, it was mostly disappointing and rubbish.

The finale was particularly bad. The way Laura found Luke’s key and Katy discovered Oliver’s picture was too easy. It just wasn’t good. The finale scores a 5 out of 10. The writers took the easy way out and refused to gamble. Previous recaps of Liar are available on Reel Mockery.
