As the episode begins, DI Karen Renton (Katherine Kelly) and DS Rory Maxwell (Danny Webb) search the shipping container. They’re surprised by what they find. It looks like blood and a sleeping bag on the ground as well as blood splatter o the side. After that, we jump back in time and see Laura (Joanne Froggatt) and Andrew (Ioan Gruffudd) enjoying dinner together. Andrew makes her laugh and seems to be winning her over. He goes on about his late wife and says it has been 8 years ago now. We jump back to Edinburgh eight years ago and Andrew visits his wife Mary (Shauna MacDonald). She spots him through the window but he disappears and doesn’t go inside. Instead, he meets up with a woman and tells her to lie down and not to move.

He crawls on top of her and pretends she is dead. Andrew slaps her on the face a few times before we experience another time jump. Mary checks on Andrew who says he had to work out late. He chats about the store that opened up near the hospital and how much he likes walking past. Andrew leaves for work moments later. When he arrives at the hospital, he notices a colleague who is upset. He finds out that Dylan (Josh Zare) is upset because he left his jacket at a man’s house last night. His keys and wallet were left in that jacket. Dylan knows where the guy lives but he doesn’t want to go back there. He says he can’t because he thinks the guy took advantage of him while he was drunk and he didn’t want to do it.

Andrew offers to get his jacket for him. He goes to the man’s house and it happens to be Oliver (Sam Spruell). Andrew asks about the jacket before Oliver reminds him that they went to university together. Andrew wonders if Oliver put something in the man’s drink but he doesn’t know why Andrew is so interested anyway. He gets the jacket and leaves a few minutes later. He goes to a pub and the bartender asks him about the jacket before he orders a drink. Andrew gets a call from home but he doesn’t answer it. He gets another and ignored it while drinking more and more. The bartender, Catherine, checks on him when he is the last person left in the pub. He explains he doesn’t understand the phrase that marriage is hard work. He laughs about her rejecting him in the past and says he still would.

He goes on and on about surprises before Catherine (Dawn Steele) encourages him to go home to his wife. Katy (Zoe Tapper) calls Liam (Richie Campbell) to tell him about the new evidence they got at the station. She says that they’re claiming Laura is lying and she did it. Liam says they have to consider it since Laura would do anything to get things done. Then, we jump back eight years and see Laura with her father. He cooks for her until she goes outside. She notices a burning smell and rushes back inside to find her father on the ground. They end up at the hospital a few seconds later. A doctor enters with the test results. We find out that he has a tumor in his head. Surgery is impossible but they can try to treat it.

It does not good for Laura’s father. After that, he tells her that his treatment is going to be very expensive but he agrees to do it. Next, Laura and Katy try to get in touch with their father but he isn’t answering his phone. He told Katy that he needed time to think. We see that he is sitting on a bench down by the water and Laura joins him. She encourages him to get the treatment and says they’ll be there for him. He isn’t scared and explains that he is done. He doesn’t want to go through the treatment since he has lived pretty bloody well for the most part. Laura wants him to fight for her and Katy but he says it is time. He shows the jewelry his mother gave to him before she passed and he thinks it might be a good luck charm. He gives it to Laura.

Then, he wants Laura to promise that she’ll make him go quietly. Next, Andrew begins following Oliver who finds another man to take home with him. Oliver convinces another man to come home with him for a few drinks before Andrew returns home and looks Oliver Graham up on the Internet. He finds his social media accounts and a bunch of pictures of him with different men. Andrew decides to sneak into Oliver’s place and install a bunch of cameras. He does so without getting caught before returning home to watch them. Sure enough, he catches Oliver drugging the man he brings into his house. We see Andrew with the woman in the motel room and she wakes up. He tells her to put her clothes on because he doesn’t believe her.

He visits Oliver and confronts him with the camera evidence. Oliver believes Andrew put the cameras up there because he wants to know how it feels. Andrew admits he has thought about it and that intrigues Oliver. He wonders what is stopping Andrew. He also believes Andrew wants to know how to do it and get away with it so he gives him advice. He offers to give him drugs to get rid of the recording. Andrew says no because he isn’t like Oliver but his buddy believes he is lying to himself. Andrew ends up taking the vial and returning home with it. He gets distracted at work and contemplates what to do. He ends up deleting the video like Oliver requested. Then, he goes to the pub and speaks with Catherine once again.

He apologizes for the other night before offering to buy her a drink. She agrees to one drink and that gives Andrew enough time to drug her. Next, Laura and Katy walk together. Katy gets a call before they go to the hospital and find out that their father is very ill. They learn that patients in his position usually do not wake up. He might be able to understand them but he cannot communicate with them. They discuss the situation outside. Katy tries to give her father the lethal dose at home but she cannot do it. Laura checks on her father and speaks to him a bit. She gives him the medication before putting the lucky charm jewelry in his hand. Then, we jump forward and Karen arrests Laura for the murder of Andrew.

Rory tells her that they found it but she doesn’t know what they’re talking about. We see that the detectives have found Laura’s necklace in the shipping container. We jump back and see Andrew having dinner with Laura again. The episode ends with Laura being transported away in a police car.

 

Liar Review

I had to rush this recap because I have so much work today but I think it will get the point across well enough. And, I am not sure the show deserves anything more than a glance over. It is getting overly ridiculous at this point. The jumping around is too much making it very difficult to follow along. We spent the entire episode finding out about the necklace only to discover that it was found in the shipping container and that is enough for Laura to be arrested.

I am not sure why the writers felt the need to explore Andrew’s transformation from good guy to a rapist. It was a bit silly for him to sneak into Oliver’s apartment and install tons of cameras without being noticed. At the very least, Oliver would’ve spotted the cameras. I don’t know. The show is really stretching reality and making it difficult to believe. I think they should’ve ended it last season at this point. The episode was pretty bad. It scores a 6 out of 10.
