As the episode begins, Nicholas Farlow (Burn Gorman) returns to Jamestown with Simeon Peck (Andre Flynn). Simeon speaks with Mercy (Patsy Ferran), who is picking up a hat for Jocelyn (Naomi Battrick). He makes sure to compliment the hat. James Read (Matt Stokoe) tells Silas (Stuart Martin) that his betrayal will also impact his wife and family. Nicholas and Simeon visit Christopher (Ben Starr). They request ingredients for Simeon’s upcoming spell. Jocelyn arrives and speaks with Christopher about Farlow’s schemes. He asks her about marriage. She tells him about George (Jason Flemyng) telling her that she needs to get married. She makes it clear that she has no intention of marrying anytime soon. James Read receives a visit from Nicholas and Simeon. They request more ingredients from him.

Jocelyn arrives. James wants to know whether or not Jocelyn intends to marry Christopher. She doesn’t give a clear answer. Alice (Sophie Rundle) works alongside Winganuske (Rachel Colwell). Silas arrives and asks Alice whether she told James about his deal with Chacrow (Kalani Queypo). Alice denies it. Nicholas takes Simeon to George. He tells him that Simeon can somehow create gold. Redwick (Steven Waddington) doesn’t believe it. Nevertheless, George agrees to keep Simeon’s abilities a secret for the time being. Meanwhile, Meredith (Dean Lennox Kelly) tells Verity (Niamh Walsh) that some of the men have relationships with one another. Soon, Nicholas and Simeon arrive at the pub. Redwick arrives and reminds everyone that sodomy is not allowed. In the morning, Pedro (Abubakar Salim) plays around with Maria (Abiola Ogunbiyi).

Temperance (Claire Cox) arrives moments later. Maria heads to her cabin and finds valuables inside. She gives Temperance a pipe to keep her away. Alice visits James. He tells her why he decided to call Silas out on the betrayal. Jocelyn watches their conversation from a distance. Alice returns to Silas and promises that Read will remain silent. Silas insists that they’ll bet set when their payment for tobacco arrives from England. Simeon and Nicholas arrive moments later. Nicholas tells the Sharrow brothers what he wants for Simeon’s experiment. Once they leave, the Sharrows agree that Nicholas really wants cinnabar. Then, Henry (Max Beesley) tells Silas that he will agree to follow him. Moments later, Jocelyn and Mercy follow Simeon and Nicholas into the fields. They quickly discover that Simeon wants to have a relationship with Nicholas. However, Farlow refuses, due to the law.

Jocelyn shows some sympathy for Farlow and his troubles. Jocelyn and Mercy return to town. Jocelyn visits Christopher and tells him that she told George he was the spy. Christopher becomes enraged. He admits that he can’t stand to be around Jocelyn. Chacrow gives Henry and Silas the cinnabar. Chacrow admits that he doesn’t trust Henry anymore. That night, Verity asks Meredith if he had a male friend. He refuses to answer. Maria arrives with the valuables. Verity agrees to take care of it. That night, Simeon tries to convince Nicholas to sleep with him. He refuses, before Redwick enters. Then, Jocelyn finds Nicholas crying. She gives him comfort. Nicholas admits he would rather Jocelyn hate him.

In the morning, Verity and Meredith visit Edgar (Tony Pitts). Verity confronts Edgar about the stolen goods. He freaks out and nearly chokes her to death. Silas and Henry gives the cinnabar to Farlow in exchange for his horse. Moments later, Simeon agrees to perform the ritual. He makes liquid gold. George believes that he is hiding something. Simeon drinks the liquid and insists it has turned him into a woman. Alice and Christopher agree to give him an exam. Meanwhile, George tells Jocelyn that it is time to wed. Alice and Christopher concluded that Simeon is a hermaphrodite. James Read admits that he doesn’t believe Simeon can create gold. Simeon believes that Farlow will accept him now that he is a woman.

Farlow refuses. He admits that he loves the law more. He tells Simeon to return to England. Henry and Pepper receive a letter from England. Alice reads it for them. It seems that their cargo was lost, yet Yeardley’s remained safe. They take up arms with the intention of confronting the governor.

 

Jamestown Review

This episode of Jamestown was a double-edged sword. Burn Gorman showed just how great of an actor he is. However, the whole story line with Simeon was a little cheesy and silly. It wasn’t bad, but it was very unrealistic. The episode got good in the end though. It is nice to see that the Sharrow brothers are going to fight back against Yeardley. The sooner he is gone, the better. The episode was good, but not great. A 7 out of 10 is deserved. Catch up with previous recaps of Jamestown right now!
