As the episode begins, Henry Sharrow (Max Beesley) and Silas (Stuart Martin) trade with the Indians. Once they’ve finished, Chacrow (Kalani Queypo) tells Silas that he wants to meet with him the next day. Alice Sharrow (Sophie Rundle) goes into labor. With help from Verity (Niamh Walsh) and Maria (Abiola Ogunbiyi), Alice gives birth to a baby boy. Maria insists she will make it home to her own children. Pedro (Abubakar Salim) strolls through town. Mercy (Patsy Ferran) wakes up Jocelyn (Naomi Battrick). She tells her that her husband has gone fishing with the doctor. On the way back home, the Sharrow brothers find the body of Castell.

After the intro, Redwick (Steven Waddington) and Nicholas Farlow (Burn Gorman) receive news about the company from Yeardley (Jason Flemyng). Jocelyn speaks with Dr. Priestley (Ben Starr) in town and learns that he didn’t go fishing with Castell. Seconds later, Henry and Silas return with the body of Castell. The townsfolk quickly try to uncover the reason behind Castell’s death. Farlow wonders whether the Indians might be involved. Redwick warns Henry about getting too close to the Indians. Afterwards, Verity tells Silas about his child. He rushes home right away. Yeardley speaks with Pedro. He learns that Castell was teaching Pedro to read. Pedro recites a poem about becoming free and getting his own share of the land.

Temperance Yeardley (Claire Cox) speaks with Jocelyn. She explains that Jocelyn will be forced to return home, since her husband has died. Back at the farm, Pedro is whipped by Edgar Massinger (Tony Pitts). Yeardley offers to buy Pedro from Massinger, but that offer is refused. Jocelyn speaks with Farlow. She learns that she will need to discharge herself and her possessions from the house at sunrise. The house is needed for a new recorder. That night, Silas takes the baby for a walk. In the morning, Jocelyn’s house is cleared of her belongings. Verity thanks Maria for helping Alice.

Maria expresses her desire to return to her family. Verity tries to convince her that she can have more babies in Virginia. Henry takes the baby from Alice. He tells her that it will be the whole colony’s child, since it was the first born there. He has also made it a crib. Jocelyn tries to convince the governor to allow her to live in the recorder’s house. He refuses. She is encouraged to marry again. Mercy finds Catholic beads while looking through Castell’s belongings. Meredith Rutter (Dean Lennox Kelly) speaks with James Read (Matt Stokoe). He tells him about seeing Castell before he died. Castell said he was doing the governor’s business. Read tells Rutter to keep quiet about what he heard. Verity agrees to let Jocelyn and Mercy move into the pub for the time being.

Temperance speaks with Alice. She encourages her to name the baby James after the king. Massinger ties Pedro to a tree. Mercy shows the beads to Jocelyn. Pedro escapes. Verity finds Maria performing a ritual to speak with her husband. Verity tells her not to. Maria slaps her and runs off. Redwick watches from a distance. Pedro tries to convince Yeardley to buy him one again. Maria is not happy with Pedro’s actions. Pedro is forced to appear before the council. They determine that he must be chained to the tree at night. Read is force to help. Then, Redwick mentions what he saw. Verity makes up a lie to protect Maria. Meanwhile, Yeardley tells the group of men that they have a traitor.

Pedro helps James chain him to the tree. Jocelyn tells Christopher about the religious beads. Jocelyn is afraid that they’ll consider her a Catholic spy. She is told to tell Yeardley. That night, James Read finds Jocelyn with her husband’s coffin. He spots the religious totem. He tells her not to put the beads in the coffin, because they will be found. When she returns to the pub, she overhears Rutter and Verity talking about Castell. She discovers that Castell was on a mission for the governor, before he died. In the morning, Castell’s body is laid to rest. Yeardley has the coffin opened for inspection, before it is buried. Back in town, Alice shows off the baby. She explains that she plans to call it Silas. Henry tells Silas that it is time for him to find a wife.

Mercy tells Pepper (Luke Roskell) about her sorrows. He provides her with advice. Christopher promises to be in constant service to Jocelyn. Maria criticizes Pedro once again. That night, Silas takes the baby for a walk. He runs into Chacrow. He is reminded that they had a deal. Silas seems hesitant to betray his countrymen. Alice steps outside and Chacrow disappears. Jocelyn tells Yeardley about the beads. He insists that Samuel was a spy. Jocelyn doesn’t believe so. She promises to tell who the Judas is if she gets what she wants. Jocelyn thanks Read for his help. Read makes a comment about Jocelyn’s black clothes. She slaps him. She tells her that he should only be slapped for just reason and by a just soul.

 

Jamestown Review

The second season of Jamestown has gotten off to a good start. The addition of the slaves was very good. There is a good chance that Massinger and the others will regret their decision. I am not sure how Alice’s child will impact the colony, but it may be used against Silas. Jocelyn hasn’t slowed down a bit. Despite her husband’s passing, it seems that her aspirations are just as wild as ever. Will she eventually get help from James Read? Only time will tell.
