As the finale of Inside Man begins, Jefferson Grieff (Stanley Tucci) talks to Beth Davenport (Lydia West) about how the brain works. Jefferson believes he knows where Janice is in principle. He finally got around to noticing what didn’t happen, but he wants her to work it out by herself. Once the call ends, Beth complains to Morag (Kate Dickie) about Jefferson. Morag tells her they’re going to base camp. Gordon (Alan Williams) visits Jefferson and talks to him about the execution process. They begin discussing a possible deal so Jefferson can reveal the location of his wife’s head. Jefferson wants him to save his life first. He warns him that the guards will interrupt if he tries to do anything. Jefferson knows he is a powerful criminal so he thinks he can save his life. Jefferson antagonizes him so Gordon begins attacking him. The warden refuses to stop it. Harry Watling (David Tennant) listens to music and ignores messages from Mary.

Harry tries to find out how long it’ll take for carbon monoxide poisoning to kill someone. Ben (Louis Oliver) bangs on the door in hopes of getting his father’s attention. Janice Fife (Dolly Wells) remembers when she was first offered the job of tutoring Ben. When he is introduced to her, Ben insists he doesn’t need a math tutor. Janice doesn’t want to change him even though he is lazy because they’d be working the fields without laziness. She knows he wants to study hard and pass the test at the last minute to surprise everyone. Janice encourages him to work hard and get good at math. During one of their study sessions, Harry asks Mary (Lyndsey Marshal) if he can work in the kitchen. She says it is okay and he should get his office back from Janice. Later, Janice asks if it is okay that she keeps using his study. Harry insists it is fine. One day, Janice learns that Ben is dealing with personal stuff that he doesn’t want to talk to her about.

He ends up telling her how Linda is trying to turn everyone against him. Ben admits it is nice that she is pretending to take an interest. Janice admits she isn’t married. In the present, Ben gets upset because his dad won’t let him out. Janice pleads with him to put the hammer down because she is scared. Harry sets a timer for two hours since that should be enough time to kill Janice. When he sees messages from Mary about the emails, he cancels the timer. The warden visits Jefferson who admits it is interesting that he was frightened even though he was doomed anyway. He confirms he told him the truth without any tricks or games. Jefferson thought he’d intervene. Casey doesn’t think Gordon would help him no matter what he told him, but he will not because he got Jefferson his leverage. Morag takes Beth to the base camp. She asks Beth not to phone Jefferson. Morag reminds her that it isn’t her flat before leaving to do some shopping.

Ben tries to figure out what is going on while he remains convinced that his dad didn’t harm anyone. He notices that his battery is low so he contemplates contacting his father. Ben questions if this is about the porn even though he can’t imagine why it would be. Janice encourages him to call the police on his father, but Ben says he can’t do that. Casey goes to Gordon to tell him about the assault being caught on tape. He thinks the FBI will care since they’ve been trying to get Gordon into a courtroom for a long time. Gordon is urged to follow up on the information Gordon provided him. If he is lying, Casey promises to kill Jefferson. Harry calls Mary who knows he took the heater into the house and worries what he might be doing. He wants to know about the email. She explains that they’re all part of it thanks to that email. Janice is supposed to be at home going to bed and her phone is broken so she couldn’t send the email.

As they continue talking, Ben worries that calling the police will mean something bad will happen to his mother. Janice attempts to convince him that they’re friends and nothing bad will happen to him if he calls the police. When he gets a call from his father, Janice tells him not to answer it. Harry leaves him a message asking him to call him back. Mary returns to the house to talk to Harry through the window. He asks her to stay not knowing anything. Mary takes Janice’s things so she can dump them somewhere. She holds his hand and pleads with him to stop right now. Harry says Ben’s life is destroyed if they let Janice walk out of this house. If Mary can show him a way out of that, he will take it. Although Mary says he can’t do this alone, Harry wants her to leave anyway. He shuts the window in hopes that she’ll leave. As Mary walks away from the house, she notices a set of keys among Janice’s belongings.

Ben checks the message from his father. Janice wants him to get help instead of telling his father where he is. She asks him to turn the heater up since it isn’t doing much. Harry calls again seconds later. Ben calls him back to ask if something happened between him and Janice. When Ben questions if Janice just left, Harry insists he isn’t lying to him. Harry eventually admits that there was an argument and Janice left. He tells him that he loves him and everything will be sorted out. After the call, Janice begins yelling for Ben to phone the police. A delivery man arrives outside only for Harry to tell him that he is at the wrong address. Ben gets a headache due to the carbon monoxide from the heater. Jefferson gets a call from Beth so he reminds her that Morag was supposed to stop that from happening. Casey interrupts to tell Jefferson that Gordon’s men are checking out the location in question. He invites him to join them in the visitation.

Jefferson surprised Beth by telling her she is in Janice’s apartment before the call ends. When the call ends, Mary opens the bathroom door and finds Beth sitting on the toilet. Mary explains that she was just dropping some stuff off for Janice. Beth doesn’t believe her since she didn’t know that she had a flat mate. When Beth suggests she dropped off the laptop, Mary grabs a breadknife and asks Beth to let her go. She eventually slashes Beth’s arm before quickly apologizing countless times. Mary yells that she needs to use the bathroom before Ben calls to ask for the truth. He learns that the flash drive contained child porn. Ben doesn’t know why Harry locked Janice in the cellar. Mary begins panicking since she knows her son is locked in the cellar too. Ben’s phone dies and she can’t get in touch with Harry. Mary flees the apartment. Janice asks Ben to turn the fire off. He can’t believe she thought Harry was into kids. Beth falls down the stairs when she tries to stop Mary.

Mary makes it outside and leaves a message for Harry before being hit by a truck. Morag returns with the shopping and sees the aftermath of the accident. Beth picks up Mary’s phone. Ben tries to convince Janice that the porn belonged to Edgar and not his father. He believes his dad was right to lock her down here after all. She gets the hammer and throws it at the heater only to hit him in the leg. She yells that they’re being poisoned. Ben gets upset and hits her with the hammer. The delivery man brings the package back because the recipients aren’t home. Harry agrees to create a birthday message for his mom until they’re interrupted by his alarm going off in the background. Harry tries to finish the video message, but stops and yells for the man to go away. He runs back inside and removes the tape from the cellar door before finding Ben down there with a bloody hammer. Ben is taken upstairs and given air as Harry insists he did it. Ben can’t seem to remember what he did.

Harry says nobody has to know anything different than what they tell them. Ben gets upset and tells his father to get away from him. He runs away from the house as Morag and Beth pull up outside. Beth goes into the house while Morag finds Ben vomiting on the side of the street. Harry prepares to take the blame for Janice’s death only to find that she isn’t actually dead yet. Ben tells Morag he thinks he did something bad. Harry tells the police he is at the vicarage and just murdered a woman. He grabs the hammer with the intention of killing her while insisting he is only protecting his son. Beth tackles him from behind before he can hit her. Harry yells that he has acted out of love and duty. He insists none of this is his fault. He snaps at Beth and screams that he is a vicar. When Harry turns around, he notices several people standing on the stairs. Jefferson admits they were looking for a piece of his wife. It was controversial at the time, but it didn’t matter since he is going to be executed soon.

He tells Harry that Gordon has some men in the right area. He explains to Harry why he thought Janice was still at his house. Jefferson says there were two places of interest, including the vicarage and Janice’s apartment. Ben is with Harry’s brother recovering. Jefferson confesses he finds murderers interesting. He wonders if Mary would still be alive if he had acted the way he did. Harry thinks they’re different since Jefferson strangled his wife and hacked her head off. Jefferson suggests that is a story for another day and Harry could be the one he tells it to. He thinks he might understand because they’re the same now. He says there are moments that make murderers of us all. Jefferson welcomes him to the inside.

 

Inside Man TV Series 2022 Review

The finale of Inside Man wrapped everything up conveniently while potentially leaving the door open for another season even if it isn’t justified. In the end, Ben nearly killed Janice so Harry decided to take the blame for it only to find out that she wasn’t dead. Nevertheless, he was sent to prison for the other crimes he committed while Ben recovered at his brother’s house.

As for Mary, she was hit and killed by a truck in front of Beth when they stepped out of Janice’s apartment. The series was clever thanks to Stanley Tucci playing an interesting death row inmate named Jefferson Grieff. That aspect of the show was successful at times even though some of the cases were detours and had little to do with the main story.

At the very least, Inside Man is a unique drama with good acting, a solid soundtrack, and decent camera work. Unfortunately, it wasn’t really able to break free of its constraints and was often held back by needless sarcasm when dealing with a serious topic. The banter wasn’t necessary especially when Janice is supposed to fear for her life. Since Inside Man is only four episodes, it is probably still worth a quick binge.

The murderous drama had more than 3 million viewers in the United Kingdom. The finale ended with 3.18 million viewers. There is no confirmation that the series will be renewed for another season. Although the story was wrapped up in the finale, there is still room for another season though.
