david innocent episode 1

As the opener beings, David Collins (Lee Ingleby) is led into a courtroom. The jury is unable to reach a verdict. David is released after seven years and three trials. The victim’s sister, Alice Moffatt (Hermione Norris), screams at David and insists he killed her sister. Alice and Rob (Adrian Rawlins) refuse to speak with the media outside. DI William Beech (Nigel Lindsay) tells the media that they’re not looking at any other suspects. David’s brother, Phil (Daniel Ryan), and his lawyer try to take him out the back way. David refuses. He heads out front. He tells the media that he will find his wife’s murderer and that people have been lying about things. Alice and Rob discuss how they’re going to tell the kids about David’s release. At the office, Beech is scolded. He is removed from the case. DI Cathy Hudson (Angel Coulby) is put in charge.

Alice picks up Rosie (Eloise Webb) and Jack (Fionn O’Shea) from school. They’re stunned by the news. Tom Wilson (Elliot Cowan) watches the news and hears about David. Alice and Rob try to explain things to Rosie and Jack. The kids are worried that David will want custody of them. David takes flowers to Tara’s gravesite. He apologizes to her. Then, Phil takes David back to his home. Phil’s walls are covered in newspapers and evidence about the case. He also learns that Phil drives by to see the kids from time to time from a distance. He shows David some photos he has taken of them. Hudson speaks with Beech about the case and their attempt to buy a home together. Back at the office, Hudson assembles a team with Steve, Mari Luz and Graham. They are given copies of the case files and told that they’ll begin going over them again tomorrow morning. Tom visits his wife. They agree that the news brought up old memories. Louise (Christina Cole) wants more money.

Rob and Alice speak with a lawyer. She encourages them to start a dialogue with David. David and Phil head to the store together. David is given a cellphone. Hudson returns home and puts her kid to sleep. After leaving the store, David visits his old friend Tim (Matthew Flynn). Tim makes it clear that he doesn’t believe David is innocent. He is told he should start a conversation with them. Hudson goes over the evidence with her team. Tom Wilson claimed he was with David until 11:30 and then changed his story later. They also wonder whether Alice could have done something to get the kids.

Hudson calls David and requests to meet with him. Graham tries to meet with Tom, but he isn’t home. Tom’s wife isn’t cooperative either. Jack begins researching his father. Rob begins having doubts too. Alice isn’t. Rosie overhears Alice belittling David. Jack reads a letter from his father. David meets with Hudson. She tells him to think about several things, including how the blood for on his coat and anything weird that happen the months before her death. Mari Luz (Zahra Ahmadi) gets in touch with a local restaurant. She learns about a woman who was working on the night when Tara visited. Graham speaks with Tom. He admits he tried to give David an alibi, but he didn’t think he was capable of killing his wife either. Rosie flees to Tara’s parents. They both admit that Tara never told them about David hitting her. Hudson speaks with the woman from the restaurant. The woman admits that the group was in a good mood until the last twenty minutes.

She claims she saw the big sister attacking the little sister. She promises that she told the cops this story previously. Eric confronts Phil. He tells Phil that he shouldn’t let David stay at his place. The others don’t like it. At home, Hudson asks Beech about the woman’s claims. He claims that they did try to get a hold of her, but couldn’t track her down. He also suggests that her statement wasn’t key to the case. He doesn’t believe that she said anything about Alice assaulting Tara though. Rob and Alice learn that Jack has gone mission. They decide to call the police. When Tom arrives home, he finds David in his house. David asks him if he was just sleeping with his wife or if he killed her too. David leaves without resistance.

Innocent Review

The opener of Innocent was pretty good. It sure ain’t as good as Rectify, but it is unique in its own right. The story seems pretty interesting so far and the acting has been pretty good. At this point, there are several possible suspects. Alice and Tom are the two most notable. There is also a chance that David is lying and actually did it. That is doubtful though. I enjoyed the opener. It scores a 7.5 out of 10.

  1. Hi Jay (two years later!)
As its lockdown I thought it would be a good idea to catch this – knowing I’d be able to watch it all. Unexpected interruption meant that I missed the last third.
So your hard work was a godsend. I’d hate to take advantage of your unselfish efforts without thanking you.
Keep it up! And thanks again,
