Charlie’s House – The episode opens with Charlie (Ryan Corr) ignoring a call from Beth (Jane Harber). Pointing out the potential volatility of bottling up his feelings, Beth’s message plays as he prepares for the day ahead. Nate (Bob Morley) addresses Charlie with “morning sunshine” before complaining about being trapped “In Limbo.” Charlie asks if he wants to join him in the shower. Nate suggests removing his clothes to make him more comfortable before admitting to being envious of his body. Forcing him out, Charlie points out that it’s about setting boundaries. Finding the refrigerator in need of food, Nate stresses the importance of a healthy diet. Changing the subject, he tells him about meeting a few wandering souls with profound wisdom to pass on but no knowledge of crossing over. He contributes his being “stuck” to his life decisions, not death. Charlie reminds him of a “Harrowing of Hell” Bible lesson.

Charlie asks what he did to tick off JC. Claiming to have met Druids, Muslims, and a Jedi, Nate says “In Limbo” isn’t strictly tied to Catholicism. Charlie assures him that he cares in the least. He bluntly says he will be glad when he crosses over and out of his life. The people he selfishly left behind need him.

Nate’s House –Freya (Emma Harvie) is hit hard by the stark realization of Nate’s absence when she wakes alone. She enters the kitchen to find Jay (Shabana Azeez) enjoying his meal. She voices concern about Annabel (Kamillia Rihani) who is staying in the new tree house. Jay claims Derrick threatened to fire her if she doesn’t show up for at least one shift. Freya informs him that Nate’s parents, Frank (Russell Dykstra) and Maria (Lena Cruz) will be there soon. They briefly discuss how to deal with Nate’s death via social media. She says a frozen checking account needs her attention when Conrad (Christopher Sommers) stops by with a covered dish. Jay tells her that he resides in the house with solar panels that earn him a lot of money. When she tries to escape without his business card, he is ready. Jay explains why a man would hit on her at her most vulnerable.

Charlie and Nate discuss the best Christmas movies. Charlie’s pick, “Die Hard 2”  has Zach puzzled. Charlie ignores Beth’s call. Nate assures him that she is only worried about him. Charlie admits to not being prepared for a heart-to-heart with his soon-to-be ex-wife. Nate asks if it would hurt him to open up to her. Charlie agrees to speak with Beth if he tells him something about his own family. Changing the subject, Nate adds “Gremlins” to their best Christmas movie list.

Nate’s House – Charlie speaks with Jay while Freya is on the phone with the bank. Jay blames the coroner for making Nate’s death worse. Freya tells them that the bank will unfreeze the accounts after she signs some documents. Charlie says he and Annabel (Kamilla Rihani) need to get a move on. Annabel arrives in full soccer gear for the game.

Bank Parking Lot – Struggling to find an empty parking spot, Jay tosses a coffee cup in the back seat. She asks what happened to the “neat freak” mentality from her childhood. She claims to support climate change, the economy, and shift work. Eyeing an empty parking spot, Jay quickly breaks, sending coffee all over Freya’s shirt. Freya is adamant about clearing up the issue with the frozen checks.

Inside The Bank – Jay’s spare shirt is not what Freya expects. She questions how Jay could wear such a revealing shirt when the bank attendant, Suzie (Alex McTavish) approaches. Nate needs to be removed from the account to resolve the issue.

Soccer Field – Charlie cheers on Annabel when Nate steps up in full coaching regalia. Annabel’s team gets scored on making it 1 to 0. Mere moments pass when the opposing team’s coach’s son, Bentley (Harry Beckwith) scores another goal. Bentley and his father (Mike Bemrose), the coach, celebrate. After explaining the tosser theory, Nate says the coach owns a Bentley dealership when his team scores another goal.

Inside The Bank – Suzie discovers an issue with the account balance. She informs Freya of a $30,000-transfer from the account to “Evergreen Enterprises” 10 days ago. Stunned, Freya tries to explain but Suzie is quick to point out that Nate made the transfer from a branch location. She says there is no information about the company.

Locker Room – Charlie gives Annabel and her teammates a pep talk. A flashing bathroom light and maniacal laughter catch his attention. Gradually approaching, he discovers Nate using the toilet. Nate tells him that he is practicing his “haunting” when it hits him why he landed him “In Limbo.” Cutting the conversation short, he schedules a later meeting at Lowlake Terrace at midnight.

Bank Parking Lot – Jay suggests the $30,000 transfer is an investment or a loan to a friend. Freya reminds her of Nate keeping it to himself.

Soccer Field – Annabel tells Charlie that the team has lost its structure and discipline. She explains her father’s structure 3 defenders, 2 midfielders, and 1 striker before giving him a few pointers. He orders Angus to share the ball with his teammates.

Nate’s House – As Jay pulls into the driveway, to find Nate’s parents have arrived. Concerned they will blame her, Freya reluctantly goes inside.

Soccer Field – Annabel finally finds her rhythm while Charlie becomes comfortable with his new role. In mere minutes, the team is only trailing by one goal. Another goal ties up the game. Charlie suggests everyone go in for the win. She reminds him of her father’s structure. He assures her that they have the win in the bag. Bentley scores the winning goal for the opposing team. Charlie apologizes to Annabel who points out that he got wrapped up in winning.

Nate’s Home – Freya and Nate’s parents discuss how Annabel is coping with Nate’s death. Marie suggests God called Nate home. Disagreeing, Freya says he chose to leave. Maria assures her it was an accident. Frank tells her to let it go before getting shocked. Maria reminds him of his not being an electrician. He assures her that he knows what he is doing. She says he made the same claim while working on the sat-nav. He claims it was intentional.

Maria asks Freya why there aren’t any Facebook posts about Nate’s funeral. Freya questions how everyone feels about her updated status to “widow.

Maria says there needs to be a place for people to pay their respects. Freya complains about delayed coroner’s report Maria suggests it is never too early to start planning. Their argument is interrupted by Annabel.

Freya informs Charlie of the $30,000 transfer to “Evergreen Enterprises.” He suggests Nate invested in coke and hookers. Laughing, she says at least that would explain why he is gone.

Lowlake Terrace – In a flashback, young Charlie (Valentino D’Adderio) and young Nate (Oliver De Los Santos) are approached by a bully, Flintoff (Rafferty Grierson) outside the school. Calling him “Orphan Annie,” Flintoff knocks his instrument out of his hand. He asks if his father left his mother because she was a dud. Nate punches him. Flintoff puts a beating on him.

Back to the present, Charlie struggles to get over the gate. He questions what happened to his body over the years. Nate escorts him over to the “Immaculate Conception” painting. Charlie takes down the painting to expose a penis sketch. Nate suggests it is necessary to remove the graffiti to make it right with Jesus. Charlie stops with only the head of the penis left. Nate asks why he stopped. When erases the penis, Nate disappears before returning a few seconds later.

Nate’s House – Learning the coroners’ report is complete, Freya suggests making a Facebook post when Charlie approaches. Suzie calls to say Nate owns “Evergreen Enterprises” but the $30,000 was immediately transferred to a third party.

 

Episode 2 Review

The show has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, it falls short at every turn. The concept of purgatory is interesting enough but the plot is a bit iffy. In fact, not everyone is willing to invest time in a show about death because they dislike or fear the stimulation. Nate’s secrets add to the mysticism of his passing.
