Granite Harbour Finale Season 1 Episode 3 Recap

As the finale of Granite Harbour begins, Davis Lindo (Romario Simpson) continues looking at the evidence through the night before traveling to Rory’s place in the morning. Rory Dashford (Andrew Still) encourages Isla to tell the police what she told him, but she thinks it is too dangerous because he has eyes everywhere. Rory questions why she gave him his keys. She admits she was an idiot. Rory argues that they can’t stay here because they’re sitting ducks before they hear someone banging on the door. When they hear Davis outside, Isla urges Rory to just get rid of him. Lindo tells him he wants to go over his statement again to see if there is anything he might’ve remembered. He thinks Rory is innocent, but he can’t prove it without his help. Davis hears something inside and suspects someone else is there.

Rory says no and quickly finds an excuse to close the door. Isla wants to use Rory’s phone to call someone. Davis walks in and tells Rory that he needs to start locking his door. At the station, Shay Coburn (Gary Lewis) denies that the phone belongs to him or that he knew it existed. Instead, he suggests DI Mallick (Bhav Joshi) worked with Ewan MacClure to plant the phone there. Mallick questions what went wrong between him and Ewan. DCI Cora MacMillan (Dawn Steele) confirms they’re already analyzing the data on the phone and have messages between Shay and Ewan about arranging Isla’s kidnapping. However, Shay claims to know nothing about any kidnapping. Cora warns him they have the burner and registered phones. They’ll have a roadmap of everywhere he went on the night Clellan died. Shay asks if this is all they have before saying their time is running out so they have to charge him or let him go.

Davis tells Isla there are search teams looking for her so he needs to let them know. Although she doesn’t want to go anywhere, Davis tells her she is injured and he has a duty of care. Then, he admits he believes Rory was at Isla’s all of Sunday night meaning someone else left his key at the crime scene. After Davis says he just wants to know what happened to Clellan, Isla says she thinks Shay left the key there. She goes on to say she gave them to Ewan since Shay never visited the pub the whole time they’ve been seeing each other. When Rory reminds her that Frank died on one of his rigs, Isla insists he wouldn’t understand. Davis tries to find out her reasoning. Mallick asks Shay why he had Isla kidnapped and whether she found out something about her husband’s accident in 2011. Frank thinks he sees the connection between Isla and Frank now that they’ve mentioned it.

Mallick again asks him about ordering Ewan to snatch Isla off the street. Cora gets a message. Isla tells Davis that Clellan was about to give her two million pounds. Davis tells her what Shay allegedly told Ewan. He asks Isla if she didn’t know about the money until Karolina told her. She admits she still doesn’t believe it and never got the chance to tell anyone because of Ewan. She wonders if Shay just thought she knew too much. Isla knew how badly he wanted to stop the merger. When Rory was arrested, Isla thought about how odd it was for Ewan to even ask for the keys. Ewan was the go-between for Shay and Isla because that made it easier to keep things under the radar. Although Isla knew Shay wanted to end their relationship, a simple phone call would’ve sufficed. She knows that the company was the only thing Shay loved more than himself so he might’ve killed Clellan.

Cora tells Mallick that there is an ambulance on the way to Rory’s house for an injured female. A couple of uniforms will hold the ambulance until she gets there. She intends to take DS Lara Bartlett (Hannah Donaldson) to see what is going on. Once they arrive, they learn from Rory that Lindo is already there, but he isn’t there now. Rory tells Bart that Davis actually believes him. Cora complains about the bloody idiot going rogue so she wants his access blocked. As Lindo walks around, he listens to his interview with Ewan until he loses access to it. Mallick tries to get more information from Shay while insisting the merger would’ve been a disaster for him. Shay confirms he was there when Rory threatened to kill his brother, but everyone else there did too. Mallick accuses him of using Rory as a patsy although Shay quickly denies that.

Shay argues that they have nothing because there is nothing against him. Mallick tells him that Clellan changed his will and left everything to Karolina. He insists he was disinherited and the King is dead. Lara talks to Monty (Michelle Jeram) and admits she hasn’t spoken to Lindo since last night. She hopes the boss changes her mind and lets him come back because he might be right about MacClure. Monty reminds her that there is nothing stopping her from digging deeper. Cora enters and learns that they have the texts between Shay and Ewan’s burner phones. There are some incriminating texts although it is believed the dates have been tampered with. Cora wants to push to get the hard drive analyzed faster. Bart ignores a call from Lindo who visits Ewan at the safe house. Linda tells Ewan (Ross Anderson) that they found Isla and she is tougher than she looks.

When asked why he didn’t say he knew her, Ewan explains that he isn’t proud of what he did. Isla thinks she has brainwashed him since he came here after his mother died. Ewan shows Davis his military kit. He claims he knew Isla was at Karolina’s hotel because of Shay. Ewan doesn’t understand Shay’s relationship with Isla since her husband died on one of his rigs. They talk about the money before Davis admits there is something bothering him about the kidnapping. He wonders why Shay would get Ewan to kidnap her in such a dramatic fashion. Davis says Ewan is with Shay every day so there was no need to text him the plan in such detail. He asks why Ewan got Isla to obtain Rory’s key. Ewan won’t talk about Clellan unless they’re doing it down at the station officially. They begin looking at Ewan’s combat medals. At the station, Bart and the others theorize about what actually happened.

Bart gets a stern warning before they return to work. Moments later, Bart manages to figure out the password to the thumb drive so they can check the contents. Davis goes to Hannah (Caroline Deyga) to tell her about Isla being found. He tries to get information about Ewan from her, but she doesn’t want to say anything. Davis questions if there is anyone who would talk about him and if it’d be surprising if Ewan was involved in everything. The detectives learn that Isla is missing again. Mallick is told that Karolina has been economical with the truth. CCTV from the hospital shows Isla leaving with Ewan. Hannah tells Davis that she always thought Ewan seemed a bit fixated with Isla. Bart suggests Lindo was right and MacClure is in deeper than any of them thought. Monty suggests Ewan could’ve planted the texts to incriminate shay. Bart asks Cora to bring Lindo back, but the idea is quickly shot down.

Mallick wonders if Isla was at the motel to collect payment for something she and Ewan had done for Karolina. Bart finally gets in touch with Lindo who reminds her that he said he’d never left her. She knows she shouldn’t be talking to him, but she had to tell him that Isla is missing again. Karolina (Katia Winter) is questioned by Mallick about a possible murder-for-hire scheme. Mallick accuses her of using Isla as a weapon and getting Ewan involved. He suggests framing Shay was just the cherry on top. Mallick says that is why she didn’t want them to get into the flash drive. Karolina shows him the agreement that proves Isla won’t seek any future recompense for the accident regardless of any evidence that may appear. She insists she is telling the truth and just trying to prove the business.

Cora confronts Shay with the evidence and claims Clellan was going to expose him for illegal hirings, fraudulent certifications, and other things. All of this was happening around the time of Frank’s death when Shay was CGO’s head of production. Cora thinks Frank would still be alive if it wasn’t for his negligence. She tries to get Shay to confess to what he knows. Shay explains that he never left the motel and the burner phone suggesting otherwise wasn’t his. Cora shows him that his registered phone took the same journey at the same time. When she says she is going to go prepare his charge sheet, Shay confesses that he wasn’t supposed to die. Davis tells Bart he is convinced that Isla is a hostage. He believes they need to find the missing piece to the jigsaw puzzle and he thinks he knows where to start. Isla wakes up in the back of Ewan’s vehicle and notices that she is restrained and drugged.

She sees that he has a picture of Isabelle. He tells her it is time to go before driving away. Cora believes Shay will confess soon since he is having his brief right now. Mallick doesn’t think Karolina is involved in this. When Shay is interviewed again, he reveals people Ewan knew were only supposed to scare Clellan. Ewan claimed they would hold him for a couple of hours to frighten him. Ewan was calling the shots and they weren’t supposed to hurt Clellan. Ewan phoned him to say something had gone wrong, but he wouldn’t go into detail about what happened. He had to go there and find Clellan’s body on the ground. Ewan was asking him what to do. Shay decided to go back to the fundraiser and hope no one saw him leave. Shay is adamant that he knows nothing about the key, the van, or the kidnapping. He denies killing his brother.

Ewan takes Isla to Frank’s grave. Davis looks through Ewan’s belongings and takes pictures using his phone. He calls Bart to tell her he just sent her three pictures. The girl in the picture is named Isabelle MacClure. Monty finds that Isabelle McKyver married George MacClure in 1988 the year Ewan was born, but George wasn’t his father. Ewan’s father is the guy whose DNA they just lifted from the toothbrush. Frank was Ewan’s father. As they continue looking through the pictures, Davis tells them he thinks he is near the location in the third one. It shows Isla at Frank’s grave although Ewan has scratched her face out of the picture. Lindo suggests Ewan came here to get revenge on all three of them including Isla, Clellan, and Shay for taking his father away. Isla figures out who she is dealing with. Ewan believes she got rid of Isabelle because she wanted Frank.

He thinks Isla told her parents who sent her away, but Isla says she just disappeared one day with her whole family. Bart argues with Cora who doesn’t want to divert the whole search team based on Lindo’s search. Bart says she isn’t going to leave her partner to fend for herself even though Cora warns her it could cost her the job. Ewan tells Isla that he thinks about everything she took when he looks at her. Isla denies taking anything and says his mom was the best friend she ever had. She reveals that his mom betrayed her since she and Frank had been together since she was 14. She is sorry for what happened to him and that Izzy wasn’t the mother she should’ve been. Bart tries to catch up with Lindo who moves closer to Ewan and Isla. Ewan complains about Isla’s relationship with Shay and suggests they deserve one another. He thinks Frank turned his back on him, but Isla insists Frank didn’t know about him.

When Ewan pulls out a gun and prepares to shoot her, Lindo yells his name from cover. Lindo eventually agrees to come out from behind the tree and says he is unarmed. He tells Ewan they have to acknowledge their past so they can make peace with their future. Lindo believes he has got what he wanted since Clellan is dead and Shay is destroyed. As he talks, he notices Bart behind Ewan who says he is Isabelle’s son. Children are supposed to be a blessing, but Ewan believes he was a curse. Lindo doesn’t think he’ll kill him since he didn’t leave him in the burning van. When Ewan notices Bart trying to help Isla escape, Lindo tackles him and a scuffle begins. Ewan holds him at gunpoint and tells him he shouldn’t have done that. Ewan drops to his knees and lets the gun go. Later, Cora confirms they had the place surrounded while Mallick says Bart didn’t give them a choice.

Cora tells him to go get debriefed and they’ll see him in the pub later. After walking around for a while, he joins them there. Lindo tells Bart he hasn’t thought about staying. Bart believes there is more to the things he said in the cemetery, but he refuses to expand on that. When Lindo sees Sandy, he seems more interested in sticking around. He gets a call from his father.

Granite Harbour Review

The finale of Granite Harbour was a bit messy with some of the revelations feeling like they were added at the last minute. Other aspects of the finale were clichés that have been done a lot before and it would’ve been nice to find out what actually happened to the characters. Still, the show got the basics right including the camera work, scenery, and lighting.

It is difficult not to feel like Granite Harbour was a missed opportunity since there was plenty of room for the show to develop into a uniquely gripping drama. The first few minutes of the opening episode were different with Romario Simpson’s Davis Lindo being allowed to showcase his charisma and optimism. Unfortunately, that was quickly dropped and replaced with a lot of tropes such as the veteran belittling Davis at every turn and the boss sacking him.

The show didn’t need a murder mystery even though that is the route they decided to take in the long run. The show just needed to give Davis room to shine and that didn’t happen. As a result, the finale and episodes before it were just okay. The finale scores a 5.5 out of 10. Recaps of Granite Harbour can be found on Reel Mockery here.
