Gangs Of London Season 1 Episode 3 Recap

As the episode begins, we’re transported to Turkish Kurdistan in 2014. We’re in the middle of a war zone and can see casualties all around. Lale (Narges Rashidi) jumps out of the back of a pick-up truck and begins shooting at the wounded soldiers nearby. She changes websites, enters a building, and gets into a short firefight with several others. She finally finds Aral who is being tortured. Lale breaks down before Hekar (Aksel Ustun) arrives and tries to disengage the torture machine but it is too late. Hekar screams and complains that the Pakis sold them out to the Turks. Lale wants Asif’s head as revenge for her husband’s death.

After that, we jump over to Sean Wallace (Joe Cole) who can’t stop thinking about the chaotic night before. We hear the others talking about the business and what Finn would’ve wanted until Alexander (Paapa Essiedu) enters and interrupts Sean. Alexander says he failed him last night and now the campsite incident is all over the news. He wants to figure out who used those Gypsies but he says something like that cannot happen again. Then, Sean is told that Luan owes them a conversation. Sean explains he wants to keep the tap off despite the others wanting to give Asif special treatment. Ed Dumani (Lucian Msamati) enters seconds later.

They begin discussing Lale and what they should do with her. Then, we see two little girls playing in a retail store. The girls head downstairs and find a group of people hiding money in cereal boxes. That ends when Lale and the others enter. Lale tells the woman to take the car so she can get the kids to school safely. Then, Lale is warned that what she is doing is reckless. She is asked if stealing Asif’s product is about getting revenge for her husband’s death. She shows the man a video of an attack on their homeland from four hours again. She complains that it has been six years but nothing has changed and she believes their operation will buy the weapons their people need.

After that, Elliot Finch (Sope Dirisu) chats with Vicky Chung (Jing Lusi) about the ongoing investigation. Vicky warns Elliot that Finn’s enemies used to disappear without a trace and the witnesses did too. She believes they can give the jury evidence that is beyond all reasonable doubt. She says Elliot should stop it if there is a risk anyone else is going to be in danger even if that means blowing his cover. Next, Eddie sits down with Luan (Orli Shuka) who suggests Eddie is the keeper of Finn’s secrets. She doesn’t know how Eddie didn’t know about this secret though. Eddie looks through photographs of dead people and finds one of a young boy.

Marian is told that Finn spent 36 million on a yacht and 180 million on a private island. The island was renamed about six months ago to the Floriana. The conversation turns to Jack but nothing was found on him. Marian tells her to research everyone. Vicky meets with Leonora (Arita Sadiku) at her apartment but Leonora is worried that people will find out and she’ll get killed. Vicky says they won’t find out before they step inside. Leonora says that her neighbor disappeared on the night the old man was shot outside of her apartment. Vicky wants to know more about that woman so they can find her and keep her safe.

The woman was from Albania and they came together about a year ago. The woman’s name is Floriana. She was supposed to escape. Floriana was going to have Finn’s baby. Meanwhile, Elliot gets to work and begins taking pictures of evidence. Eddie enters and Elliot confronts him. Elliot says he is there for Billy before he is told to wait outside. As Elliot steps outside, Marian enters and speaks to Eddie about Floriana. Eddie claims he never met her. Marian believes Jack would’ve known everything about her. Billy Wallace (Brian Vernel) steps outside and talks to Elliot. They chat about the chaos at the kebab shop and Billy wants to know more about Elliot.

Billy is worried that Sean has lost his mind and he warns Elliot not to let Sean get into his mind. Before Billy leaves, he tells Billy it was nice knowing him. Cole (Gordon Alexander) gets into the vehicle seconds later. Elliot drives as Cole gives him directions. Cole is dropped off at a construction site for the Wallace Company. Luan goes to Nigeria and tours a construction project. He meets with Mosi and tells him his money will be washed through the Wallace organization in the next few days.

Mosi tells Luan to bring him a building so they can make money. Next, Elliot runs into Shannon Dumani (Pippa Bennett-Warner). He tells her that he is there to pick something up. She tells him it is a rug and her. While she gets ready, Elliot takes pictures of more evidence. He is surprised to find Danny (Taye Matthew) playing video games nearby. Elliot sits down with the boy and they play games together while Shannon watches from behind. Eddie enters and learns that Elliot is the driver. Once they leave, Elliot learns that Shannon would often get dumped when boys found out she was Ed’s daughter.

They talk about business and other things before the conversation turns romantic. They almost have sex but Elliot stops that when he reveals he is married. Cole begins watching the store where Lale hides money. Eddie sits down with Asif (Asif Raza Mir) and tries to convince him to stay around. Asif isn’t sure why Lale would steal from him because it would be a death sentence. Eddie promises to take care of her and he says it will not unravel. Asif believes Eddie knows more than he is telling and he wonders if Sean knows about this meeting.

Later that night, they visit the store where Lale should be but immediately find out that something is wrong. They go inside and begin looking around. They find bags belonging to the kids but nothing else. Then, they watch camera footage of the girls and the clerk being led away by Cole. Elliot is ordered to destroy the drive. The couriers want to do everything on their own but Lale says her drive will take them to the airport. The man says they don’t get to choose because they lost the Wallace protection. He threatens her with a knife so Lale pretends to cooperate. Instead, they end up killing the couriers. Then, the driver is told that they’ll follow him to the airport. Moments later, Alexander speaks to a small group. Marian and Jevan listen in the audience. Alexander tells everyone about Finn and his ability to climb up the ladder. Then, he gives the audience advice for achieving their goals. Elliot arrives as Alexander speaks to Jevan who wants to work with Alex. Elliot pulls Alex away and tells him that Cole has taken Lale’s sister and two daughters. Marian joins them and learns what Sean has done.

Alex tries to get in contact with Sean but he doesn’t answer his phone. Lale’s package is taken to the airport before she receives a call from her sister telling her about the kidnapping. Cole won’t stop unless Lale brings Wallace the money. When the call ends, Hekar wants to know what has happened but Lale pretends it isn’t a problem. Elliot sneaks into the Wallace building and chokes the old security guard unconscious. Cole threatens to kill Lale’s sister. Elliot arrives and tries to give the kids food. He tells Cole that Sean sent him before he attacks Cole and Cole opens fire on him. Elliot does his best to rescue Lale’s sister and her kids. Elliot shoots Cole and that sends him crashing to the ground.

Lale calls before turning around and finding Sean behind her. She asks what Wallace wants but the money is already gone. Elliot checks on Lale’s family while Cole tries to collect himself. The guard checks on him but Cole shoots the guard. Lale tries to tell Sean why she sent the money to her people for food and clothes. She tells him about Asif torturing her husband. Lale gets close and tries to grab Sean’s gun. She pleas with him to call and make sure her kids are okay. Sean tells her that he wouldn’t kill kids. He points a gun at her but Lale says he can’t do it. The cereal boxes are pulled from the plane and burned in front of Lale.

Cole tries to fight back as Lale’s family makes a run for it. Cole and Elliot get into a fight. Cole leaves Elliot on the ground to go after the family but Eddie shoots him and kills him. Sean tells Lale that it isn’t about the money. He says she is the only one he can rule out from killing his father. He knows she needs them too much. He warns Lale to never go against them again and not to go after Asif.

Gangs Of London Review

I am not a big fan of Gangs of London. I liked the previous episode a bit more than this one but it was decent. I think the show is better when it is intense and full of action. I’ll say that I wish the episodes weren’t so long though. There might be too much going on simultaneously and that makes it difficult to follow at times. Or, it might just put too much focus on things that really won’t matter in the long run.

Still, I have little to watch so I’ll stick around until I finish the season. This episode scores a 6.5 out of 10. Previous recaps of Gangs of London are available on Reel Mockery.
