FROM Season 1 Episode 10 Recap

Oh, The Places We’ll Go – The episode opens with Ethan Matthews (Simon Webster) playing finger puppets when Julie Matthews (Hannah Cheramy) offers to tell him a story. He assures her that he can make his own stories. A bit more prying reveals the premise of history when Jade (David Alpay) arrives with a hair dryer. He asks about Jim Matthews’ least favorite lamp before claiming to have solved their energy problems. Disassembling a lamp, he points out their biggest electrical problem, the receptacles don’t work. He adds the wires lack copper conductors but there is still electricity. He demonstrates with the partially dissembled lamp. He suggests there is enough wattage to illuminate the bulbs. He says someone brought the hair dryer into the town, meaning it has copper conductors. He attaches the stripped ends to the bulb connection before replacing the light bulb. The lamp illuminates and the hair dryer works. Jim believes it is possible to turn the Colony House into a large battery.

Boyd Steven (Harold Perrineau) focuses on the boat key while Sara (Avery Konrad) stares at an earthworm. She questions if the animals know they are trapped in this mystical nightmare. He says slicing a worm in half won’t kill it but force it to grow into two separate worms. She asks what pulled their tent away from its original location. Stepping outside, he sees the forest covered in a spider web-like material.

Town Diner – Jade stresses the importance of copper conductors. He says if they can get enough wire to run from the lamps to the Colony House roof where the tower is located, it should be possible to power the antenna. Jim informs them of the need to utilize the electrical wiring from appliances and other devices that were brought into the town. He says with luck, they should be able to get a signal out before nightfall. Julie approaches Jade as he prepares to leave on his bicycle to remind him that her father is not “Mr. Tea Cup” but Jim. He assures her that he knows his name. Their spat ends when Jim orders her to return to the diner. Jade sarcastically congratulates her for standing up to her father. She demands he stop the “Tea Cup” crap. He agrees, but only under the condition that Julie becomes “Spark Plug” instead.

He tells her how radio waves travel differently than humans. They speak briefly before parting ways.

After saying he doesn’t know where they are, he suggests going in the direction of the searchlight which is probably part of something important. She warns there could be something worse at the light. She asks who is “Mr. Fish and Loves.” He admits it is his nickname from the service before asking if his wife, Abby reached out to her. She claims the voice warns of danger ahead when they hear someone pleading for help. They follow the voice to a clearing with a large tree covered in what looks like cobwebs. Wrapped in a cocoon, Abby is situated at the base of the tree. He is startled when she threateningly grabs his arm. As he works to remove the webs, spiders break out of a hive. Jim agrees but is willing to accept the risks to push forward. As he tries to protect the components, the storm approaches more violently. Everyone rushes inside to avoid the storm. Donna urges the work to be delayed. A voice from the other side chimes in. Shocked, Jim questions what he is hearing. The voice asks if he is Jim Matthews. Jim asks who is speaking to. From Season Finale Review

A strong finale! If this series was successful at nothing else, it certainly did a great job of building suspense. That said, it felt as if it did much more than suspense-building to me. Another thing I liked about the series was the quick resolutions. It felt to me that the series did an excellent job of providing rapid conclusions to many of the compelling storylines. Although the answers don’t often answer all the questions, they provide just enough information to keep me intrigued. There are, of course, times when some of the storylines felt a bit drawn out. I give the finale a strong 5.5 to 6.
