Dublin Murders Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

In a flashback at the beginning of the episode, Adam Reilly (Michael D’Arcy) watches as Cathal (David Thomas) flirts with Margaret. Moments later, Adam’s father, John (Mark Byrne), steps outside and gives him a piece of chocolate. Adam is told to keep his mouth shut so he doesn’t have to lie to women. We jump forward a bit and see Rob (Killian Scott) in the hospital with his father. His mother encourages him to hold his father’s hand. After the intro, Rob and Cassie (Sarah Greene) meet up. They agree to put a decent face on before speaking with their team. They learn that Cassie is going to be leaving so she can work the murder case of Lexie. Quigley (Eugene O’Hare) lets Rob know that Simone (Alexandra Moen) and the others have arrived for interviews.

Simone is shown a picture of Cathal but she cannot remember seeing him. She is asked if she ever thought Rosalind and Katy were victims of sexual abuse. She never thought that. She believes that Margaret has taken the girls to a caravan park that they visit during vacations. After that, Jonathan (Peter McDonald) and Cathal (Barry O’Connor) are interviewed simultaneously. Phelan (Ian Kenny) helps with the interviews but they get very little. Cathal and Jonathan continue saying that they went to the movies to watch Porky’s Revenge on the night of the 1985 disappearance. When both men leave, they’re surprised to see one another. Phelan is happy to help Rob since he wants to get into murder in the future.

Meanwhile, Cassie studies video of Lexie so he can find out how to imitate her. She watches as Frank (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) tells Lexie’s friends that she is awake. She has been spewing nonsense because she has been heavily medicated. O’Kelly (Conleth Hill) offers to get Cassie off of the case but she isn’t interested in taking him up on that offer. The house Lexie shared with her friends is searched thoroughly. After that, Rob pays a visit to the caravan park so he can speak with Margaret (Kathy Monahan). He encourages her to tell the truth about the night of the disappearance but she sticks with her original story about the cinema. Rob leaves and speaks with Rosalind (Leah McNamara). He gives her a cellphone so she can get in touch with him if she remembers anything.

Next, Roch Boyle (Aidan O’Hare) speaks with Alicia Rowan (Eunice McMenamin). She encourages him to track down Adam. That night, Rob goes to the woods and approaches on foot. He cannot bring himself to go inside. He leaves in a hurry after getting spooked. Sam O’Neill (Moe Dunford) tells Cassie and Frank what they’ve found. They discovered soap suds near the bottom of a tree outside of the house Lexie shared with her friends. Sam believes someone washed blood off there. When Sam leaves, Cassie follows in hopes of smoothing things over with him. It doesn’t happen since Sam isn’t willing to forgive her yet.

Cassie gets a tattoo and makeover so she will look like Lexie. Rob places a picture of Cathal on a nearby tree to see if Damien can identify him. When he cannot, Rob becomes upset. Dr. Mark Hanley (Jonathan Forbes) gets involved. Damien is allowed to go home a few moments later. Mark tells Rob that he knows what he is doing is wrong. Rob receives a call from Rosalind so he meets with her later. She is dressed up and believes that Rob is interested in her romantically. Rosalind tells Rob that she went to say in a Dublin hostel when Jessica (Amy Macken) got her first period. During the day, she roamed the town. When Rob returns to the station, he encounters Quigley and Sam. Rob is told that O’Kelly is waiting for him. In the elevator, Quigley bothers Sam by talking about a possible relationship between Cassie and Rob. O’Kelly asks Rob about the reporter and Adam. Rob makes a story about Adam being killed in a vehicle accident in New Zealand. The following day, Frank grills Cassie to ensure she knows everything about Lexie, her friends, and her house. Lexie’s phone receives a call from a man. He wants to know if everything is still on. Cassie tells him that it is. When the call ends, she recognizes the phone number as the one that has been harassing Jonathan Devlin.

Cassie goes to Rob to tell him about the phone call. Rob doesn’t believe the two are connected and Cassie wants the key to her flat back. Rob insults Cassie several times before their conversation ends. He tells her that she is no different than other women and that disappointed him. Later, Rob finally gets fed up with the blinking light. After flashbacks and delusions, he smashes the light. After that, he goes for a ride and sees a younger version of himself riding around on a bicycle. He gets out and follows the boy. He approaches the woods once again. Cassie insulting him as a coward encourages him to step into the woods alone. While Rob strolls through the woods, we see flashbacks of a young Adam holding onto a tree and screaming.

Rob wraps himself around the tree and relives the trauma. In a flashback, Adam and his friends watch as Cathal and his buddies play around with Sandra (Aoife Fitzpatrick). Jonathan gives her a kiss before Cathal gets a turn. Cathal gets too feisty with her. He ends up taking her to the ground and raping her. Shane tells them not to do it. Sandra looks over and sees Adam and the others watching it all. Cathal chases them through the woods a short time later. Rob wonders why he cannot remember what happened. He sees Sandra walking through the woods crying. Rob gets scared, drops his flashlight, and runs out of the woods. He gets into his vehicle and drives away. The following day, Cassie prepares to assume the role of Lexie.

Rob visits her apartment and tries to get in touch with her. He opens her door and steps inside. He calls her and leaves a voicemail asking her to please come back. He says that he has something he wants to tell her. Rob sobs on Cassie’s bed while Frank takes Lexie back home. Lexie’s friends are happy to see her.

Dublin Murders Review

I really like Dublin Murders but the show isn’t perfect. It tries to be too intricate and I find it very difficult to follow the story at times. I can’t be the only one. This is a show you have to sit down, watch, watch again, and study intently. If you don’t pay close attention, there is a good chance that you’re going to miss something. Will that something be integral to the story in the long run or is it a red herring? I am not sure yet.

I am hoping the payoff will be worth it. The show’s atmosphere is fantastic. It feels creepy and depressing simultaneously. Honestly, this episode didn’t do much. We finally found out that Rob has a disdain for women and Cassie prepared to go undercover as Lexie. As long as both storylines are juggled carefully, things should get interesting from here on out. If they’re not, we might be looking at a jumbled mess. This episode was okay but slightly long-winded. I’d give the episode a 7 out of 10.

Greetings from the American colonies. I just watched episode 5. Thank you for your thorough recaps. As you state, the plot is far too intricate, as if the screenwriter wanted to fool everyone but somehow became lost in the tangled web with the result that no one is really sure of what is happening.
I would like to ask how the reason for Rob’s dislike of women became apparent in this episode. I recall his saying that they are all the same, but that did not tell me much.
    Thank you for your insight.

Thanks for the comment. It has been a bit since I watched this show and I’ve been busy watching others. So, my mind is a bit boggled and I can’t remember exactly what was going on here. However, I think the show delves deeper into this a bit later.

From what I recall, there was really no sign that Rob felt that way until late into the show but it has something to do with his past and parents.

I had the same question ! To bad the author isn’t really certain why they made the comment . Oh well. There’s certainly plenty to be confused by.

      • ReelMockery says:

Ah, this is actually embarrassing. I can’t remember why I wrote that. Can’t even remember writing it either. But, I think it might be a typo and was supported to be, “we found out that Rob has a disdain for women”. The show never explained it especially in this episode.

The only explanation I can see for his disdain for women would be the relationship with his mother? But yes, I am going to call this a typo and will be fixing it right now. Sorry for any confusion here.
