Dublin Murders Episode 2 Recap

As the episode begins, young Adam Reilly (Michael D’Arcy) is harassed by the local kids who want to know where Jamie and Peter have gone. He cannot answer them so they begin pelting him with rocks. It is a nightmare. Adam begins writing letters to his friends asking them to return so he can go back home. He leaves these letters in the woods when he goes for a run with the others at the child’s home. After the intro, Rob Reilly (Killian Scott) hops into his car and begins reading through old case files. He finds something odd about Jonathan Devlin. During this time, Cassie Maddox (Sarah Greene) puts together a trap she can find out if someone has been sneaking into her apartment. The strange man, Frank Mackey (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor), follows Cassie on a train. He gets close to her but never speaks with her.

After this, Rob and Cassie meet with Jonathan Devlin (Peter McDonald) so he can identify the body of his daughter. After a few hiccups, Jonathan confirms that the body belongs to Katy (Amy Macken). We learn that Jonathan has lost his job and he doesn’t want to buy a cheap coffin. He tells Cassie that someone has been calling him with threats. The man threatened his daughter but Jon thought nothing of it. He felt good because he was getting one over on his rivals. He thought they were getting desperate. After that, Jon is taken back to his flat. Before he is allowed to leave, Rob tells him that they’ll get the person responsible for Katy’s death.

Rob takes Cassie to his childhood swing. It was put up by Peter’s dad Joe who eventually hung himself using it after his son went missing. The suicide took place on the 10th anniversary of Peter’s disappearance. Rob suggests that Jamie’s mother, Alicia Rowan, will need protection. Rob has a change of heart and wants to stick with the case. He explains that Jon didn’t recognize him but he wasn’t unable to recognize Jon either. He says that Jon and his mates might be involved. When he was young, Jon and his friends would refer to Jon and his buddies as Hairball, Headbanger, and the other one. Cassie is shown an old case file and told that any detective who takes over will likely seek out Adam Reilly.

They discuss the investigators on the prior case. Both have passed away. Rob is convinced that nobody will be able to determine that he is actually Adam Reilly. He tells Cassie that he has forgotten everything between chasing his friends and being found. He lost ten hours of memories despite many sessions with psychiatrists. We see a flashback of young Jonathan (Daniel Brickenden), Shane (Niall O’Brien), and his other friends running through the woods. After that, we see Sandra Sculley (Carolyn Bracken) arrive at the dance school. She looks through a locker before heading toward the shower. Simone Cameron (Alexandra Moen) finds her before too long.

Sandra says that she can leave as long as she gets paid. Simone says that she gave the police the names and addresses of everyone who works there so they’ll want to speak with her. Before Simone leaves, she tells Sandra that the dance school will stay shut for a week. Sandra won’t need to come in but she’ll be paid as usual. Once Simone leaves, Sandra begins drinking a beer. The investigators learn that there is CCTV footage from the Devlin house. It shows Katy leaving early in the morning. She doesn’t have anything with her so she likely wasn’t running away. Rob tells O’Kelly (Conleth Hill) that there might be a link to the old case because of Jonathan, Cathal Mills, and Shane Waters.

Rob explains that Devlin and his buddies were spotted at the cinema in the corridor. A 14-year-old girl is the only witness who can put them at the theater on the night of the disappearance. The woman’s name is Margaret Byrne and she eventually got married to Jonathan. O’Kelly decides to put Quigley (Eugene O’Hare) in charge of reading through the old case files. Cassie tells O’Kelly that Detective Sam O’Neill (Moe Dunford) is going to be put in charge of investigating Devlin’s allegations of land fraud. Quigley is excited to be back on the team. Sandra begins cleaning the dance studio.

During the cleaning, she remembers hanging out with Jonathan and Jamie (Ellie O’Halloran) back in the day. She dressed the girl up and such. Cathal Mills (Barry O’Connor) tries to get rid of the guy who has been following him around but he doesn’t want the police involved. Rob and Cassie meet with the man who gives tours at the dig site. He saw a man in his 40s wearing French blue and believes he could be involved. The man explains that Jonathan was very protective of his daughters. He says that he has to take care of his mother because she has MS. Damien (Ian Kenny) is allowed to leave moments later. Phelan (Ian Kenny) is told to subtly investigate Damien’s claims about his mother when he drops him off.

The man, who I believe might be Shane Waters, continues painting “He Rises” on the billboards throughout town. Moments later, Cassie speaks with Sam on the elevator. Cassie tells Sam that this is his chance to get into murder and she believes that will be a good thing for him. He tells Cassie that Katy used the code JE55 on her phone and that stands for her sister Jess. Rob goes to the evidence room to speak with Quigley who says that one of the investigators worked on the case until he died. Quigley makes a comment about turning Rob into an Irishman. Sandra has another flashback. This time, she sees Simone telling Katy that part of the beauty of ballet is the pain. O’Kelly speaks to Cassie and Rob about the media believing the graffiti might be Satanic.

Then, Cassie tells him that there are three lines of investigation. The first is Devlin’s Move the Motorway campaign and the second is the man in the French blue tracksuit. Katy didn’t have social media and they do not believe she was groomed by a pedophile. They suspect that Jonathan controls the communications. Then, they turn their attention to the 85 case and Jonathan, Cathal, Shane, and Margaret. Next, Sandra is visited by Phelan. She admits she saw Katy at practice and that she practiced harder before she disappeared. She did not see anyone hanging around during that time. Sandra says that she never spot to the girl’s mother or dad. Rob and Cassie discuss the possibilities. Rob isn’t convinced that Damien is telling the truth.

He believes he likes talking and being important. Then, their conversation turns to Jonathan and his friends. Rob tells Cassie about Jonathan’s girlfriend who used to dress Jamie up. The girlfriend wasn’t Margaret. We see another flashback of Jamie showing off her makeup to Peter and Rob. Then, Rob heads home. Jonathan freaks out at home. He tells his wife to turn down the television but ends up getting beat up in return. Cassie returns home and checks the trap. Rob goes home and has some fun with Heather even though she doesn’t like him and believes he is a pervert who could be responsible for Katy’s demise. Cassie finds Frank in her house and pulls a gun on him.

She recognizes him and puts down the gun. Rosalind Devlin (Leah McNamara) leaves home in the middle of the night. Frank tells Cassie that this is a friendly reminder that she should not reactivate her old identity, Lexie Mangan. He says that reactivating that identity would cause big trouble for her and he wouldn’t be able to protect her. Cassie says she hasn’t seen Lexie since everything happened. He says that Alexander Mangan applied for a birth certificate and he believes Cassie did it. He wonders how Cassie can afford the flat she is living in. Cassie explains that a family member died and left her a house. She sold it to buy the property. We learn that Cassie was pretending to be Lexie for Frank but he believes she wants to come back.

He tells her to not do what she is thinking about and warns her again. He says that no undercover wants to go to prison before leaving. Rob returns to the police station to speak with Rosalind who has something to ask him. Rosalind wants to know if Katy was raped. Rob promises that there were no signs of a sexual assault. Rosalind has to hurry back home so nobody will know she has been gone. She tells Rob that Katy was a person and she wants Rob to promise that he’ll always think of her as a person. Rob promises to do just that. The following day, the man with the paint cans continues walking down the road. Rob and Cassie visit the woman on the scooter Mrs. Fitzgerald (Barbara Brennan).

They go inside and she tells the investigators that Jonathan was wild. She mentions Sandra Sculley too. She says that Sandra went to London to get rid of Jonathan’s baby. Margaret wasn’t allowed to do the same so she ended up having Rosalind and getting married to Jonathan. Margaret’s nerves got the better of her so Rosalind ended up being the mother in the household. Rosalind doesn’t have a life of her own since she has to fetch after Jess so much. Fitzgerald says that one twin comes from God and the other from some place with a curse. A car approaches the paint can man on the road. It stops and he asks for help but the woman in the car continues on.

Phelan gives them some reports and tells Rob that Mrs. Donnelly is bedridden. Cassie goes through the interview with Sandra. Cassie says that Sandra lied. She claimed that she knew nothing about Jonathan and Margaret. They wonder why she would lie. In a flashback, we see Sandra, Jonathan, and the other boys kidding with Jamie, Peter, and Adam. Sandra tells Jamie that she’ll get all the boys in a few years.

Dublin Murders Review

I started recapping this episode, got stopped for work, and lost everything I originally wrote. So, there might be errors above and I don’t have time to go back and fix them now. Please forgive me. Anyway, I like Dublin Murders but the show doesn’t know how to remain mysterious. It tries a little too hard to be mysterious and it is making things confusing. The episode got better in the end but the beginning was all over the place.

I am still confused as to who is who and what the heck is going on half of the time. It might be biting off more than it can chew. We’re juggling the histories of Rob and Cassie while attempting to unravel the unsolved disappearances and the murder of Katy. It might be a little too much. Nevertheless, the story is interesting when we’re on the right path. I like the atmosphere of it and I am eager to find out what is going to happen.

At times, I believe that Katy might’ve switched places with her twin. Is Rob going to turn into the detectives assigned to the previous case? Will he go nuts or die trying to find the answers? The episode was okay but a little all over the place. It scores a 7 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of Dublin Murders before you leave!
