Clean Sweep Series 1 Episode 6 Recap

Silent Mouth – The episode begins with Shelly Mohan/Maggie Callahan (Charlene McKenna) reminding Charlie Lynch/Phil Whelan (Adam Fergus) of her promise to deal with Freddie Vee (Tristan Heanue). When he stabs Freddie, she orders him to stop before he dies. A beaten and battered Freddie issues a stern warning. Jason Mohan (Barry Ward) wakes her up. He offers to help with breakfast before promising to support her getting a job. He tells her that Whelan was with a sex worker while his daughters were in England. He says autopsies are extensive but they can’t determine what is going on inside.

Niall Mohan (Aidan McCann), Caitlin Mohan (Katelyn Rose Downey), and Derek (Rhys Mannion) are surprised to see Jason preparing breakfast. Jason demands Derek have breakfast with the family.

Niall boards the school bus. When Billy Ryan (Benjamin Bergin) teases him, Emma Wilson (Nathara Dayananda) pops him on the head. Mr. Sweeny (Joe Rooney) orders Ryan to settle down as Emma escorts Niall to the back of the bus. Ryan does a throat-slitting gesture. She admits to liking how Niall fights with his brain.

Holding out the pieced-together photo, Caitlin asks if Charlie is her dad. Shelly assures her that Jason is her father. She describes her actions when dating Charlie as “careless and wild” which resulted in a pregnancy. Caitlin asks her Jason knows. Shelly claims they know everything about each other. Caitlin asks what happened to the baby. Shelly admits to have a miscarriage. In a flashback, Maggie holds her baby for the first time.

Jason asks Derek about his girlfriend. After asking if he and Shelly are getting a divorce, Derek reminds him of how he divorced his mum. Jason assures him it was a different situation. Derek asks if he cheats on Shelly too. Jason contributes his cheating on his first wife to being young.

Caitlin asks Shelly if she can ask Emma to the dance. Shelly asks if she fancies Emma. Caitlin asks if it is okay for her to invite a friend to the dance.

Detective Fiona Uba (Jeanne Nicole Ni Ainle) alerts Jason of Mariama being found. Jasontells Derek that he will need to ride his skateboard the rest of the way. Irate, Derek calls him a “prick” before hopping out of the car. Upon arriving at the crime scene, Fiona tells Jason that Mariama has a broken neck. He questions if the fall from a cliff was intentional or accidental. She suggests the perpetrator threw her over the cliff. A crime scene investigator points out a human-trafficking brand and Sankofa tattoo.

Commissioner Garrett (Steve Gunn) tells DCI Gwen Crichett (Cathy Belton) that Phil Whelan is the fugitive, Charlie Lynch. He adds that Charlie disappeared after the Irish gangster, Freddie Vance was murdered in the 90s. Rory Lynch (Niall Bishop), a New Labour Party candidate, is Charlie’s older brother. Irate, he calls her a “fu**ing slag” that doesn’t know her place in the organization. An angry Crichett reminds him of her CI dying at the hands of Freddie’s gang. She claims her CI was about to identify a corrupt London police officers. He warns there will be grave consequences. She recites the oath London officials say when being sworn into office. She identifies herself as the source of the Times article to Detective Ames (Robert Bergin).

In a flashback, Freddie Vee (Tristan Heanue) asks Maggie what she is going to give him in return for dinner. She promises to screw his brains out.  Removing his jacket, he explains how his criminal enterprise operates. As she unbuckles his belt, Charlie attacks him. Back to the present, Shelly tosses the photo into the fire.

Fiona informs Jason of Shelly’s DNA matching DNA found on Phil’s belongings. She suggests Shelly’s visit to his office nearly cost them the case. Eileen (Orla Casey) scolds Jason for Zelma’s children being taken. He tells her that they have nothing to do with deportation. She calls him a “liar.” Fiona promises they will look into it while Eilenn walks away. Superintendent Colin O’Connor (Luke Griffin) asks what is going on. Jason fills him in on Zelma’s case.

Shelly is chopping carrots when she sees an empty slot in the knife block. She calls Derek to asks if he took a kitchen knife. He denies taking the knife. She assures him that he will meet more girls. In a flashback, Charlie tells Maggie that it is vital they stick together. She removes money out of his wallet. Before leaving her at a truck stop, a man invites her to stay with him and his missus. She says her baby is due in a few months. Referring to her as “Deidre,” he says good luck. Back to the present, Jason calls to explain what happened to Zelma Permeti (Ailbhe Cowley) and her children. He admits to doing nothing to help her. She assures him that it was out of his hands. He says Mariama’s body was discovered this morning. He apologizes for taking her and their children for granted. Garda Pat O’Neill (Sean Duggan) says Aelish Flaherty (Roisin Rankin) claims to know the woman in the composite sketch.

A man orders Garrett to stop the Times’ source from talking. Garrett promises to do what he can. The man issues a stern warning for the call ends.

Jason visits Aelish to discuss the composite sketch. Maya (Tara Mae) drops off a used air-pulse generator and vest for Niall. Shelly asks if Aelish is working. Maya claims she requested a day off for personal reasons. Shelly pays in cash.

Jason is waiting when she returns home. He asks if she was with a man at the Glencara Hotel last Wednesday. He asks if she was with Matt Wilson (Trevor Kaneswaran) or his brother, Kevin Mohan. She asks for the names of his affairs. He asks if she cheated because of Fiona. She demands to know why he has affairs. He admits to be “fu**ed up” and “stupid.” She claims to have wanted to experience what it was like without all the responsibilities. She promises to never meet with the guy again. He warns there could be a problem if O’Connor discovers she was at the Glencara Hotel when Whelan was murdered.

During a press conference, Rory claims to have last spoken with Freddie 20 years ago when he chose a criminal life to his middle-class upbringing. A reporter reminds him of Adam Vance’s threat to kill those responsible for Freddie’s murder. She asks if Charlie was responsible. He says the motto of their campaign is “breaking cycles of violence.” He admits to regretting not knowing Charlie was alive to help the police bring him to justice.

Shelly approaches as Katie Ryan (Aoibheann McCann) who is speaking with the police about Billy. Emma tells her that Billy had a knife in his possession at school. She adds Billy threatened to kill her and Niall. She says he is bullying Niall.

Jason suggests Mariama and Whelan were acquainted prior to their meeting at the hotel. He says it possible she was part of his drug operation. He boasts busting a human trafficking operation, raising a room of applauds. Whelan invited her to his hotel room because there is no evidence of a robbery. Fiona questions why she murdered him before asking about the woman in the composite sketch. He claims Aelish isn’t for sure if it is the same woman. He explains their theory to the other detectives. O’Connor how they came to the conclusion that Whelan and Mariama knew each other. Jason points out the two “magpie” tattoos. He says she shot him to stop him from exposing her. O’Connor asks about the woman in the sketch. Jason suggests she was a guest taking the stairs. The murder weapon has never been recovered. Mariama died after “accidentally” falling or jumping from a cliff. The coroner tells him the cause of death is “blunt force trauma.” He says since there was no water in her lungs, the victim died before the tide moved in. O’Connor congratulates Jason before promising to make a promotion recommendation soon.

Jason tells Fiona that Charlie got himself murdered. She asks if they are going to  ignore the facts and point the finger at the Nigerian woman. He reminds her of the woman being a prostitute. She suggests the woman was abducted and raped. He tells her that is all they have. She tells him that she is going on to wash him off.

Shelly is cooking when a news report announces the police closed the Glencara Hotel murder after the suspect was discovered dead. She has dinner with the kids.

Pat tells Jason about Critchett’s message. Jason listens to the message while looking at Maggie’s progressed photo. She says Maggie has a magpie, also her nickname, tattoo which he recalls on her back.

In a flashback, Freddie warns Maggie and Charlie that he will find and kill them. Picking up a knife, she stabs him. Back to the present, Jason tells Shelly that she wasn’t with a man at the hotel. She denies ever having an affair. He embraces her before saying, “Magpie.” The episode ends.

 

Clean Sweep Finale Review

Crichett tells a Times journalist about Whelan and Charlie being the same person, a missing fugitive. When the story breaks, Rory holds a press conference. He denies knowing Charlie was alive but in an earlier episode, he sends him a text asking if he found Maggie. Commissioner Garrett receives a call from a man who orders him to shut Crichett up or he will do it.

Caitlin confronts Shelly about the image she found in the trash. Shelly claims a pregnancy ended in a miscarriage. However, a flashback shows her holding a healthy newborn.

A flashback shows Charlie beating Freddie Vance. He and Shelly planned to leave him alive until he threatened to find and kill them. Shelly finishes him off before fleeing London.

Jason closes the Glencara murder case after the prostitute who visited Charlie twice at the hotel was found dead. He speaks with Aelish who tells him about Shelly having an affair with a man at the hotel. Fiona doesn’t agree with his theory because he ignored the facts. After the case is closed, Pat tells him about Crichett’s message. When he sees Maggie’s progression image, he knows it is Shelly.

The script was written with a series two in mind. Ending on a cliffhanger, the finale was far from a success. The confusion throughout the show is contributed to subpar editing and too many flashbacks, many of which are repeats. Too much going on, leaving minimal airtime for the main premise.
