The Cape Town Prostitute Killer – The episode opens with a male driver watching Eva (Charlene Le Roux) walking down the sidewalk. He recalls his mother, Nadine (Natalie Robbie) waking and sending him to his room when a man approaches. Irate, he claims to assure her that he knows what she is doing. The boy covers his ears with his hands to muffle the argument. Back to the present, the man continues to watch Eva walking along the sidewalk.

Cape Town – A group of sex workers line up to be fingerprinted. Nearby, a poster alerts the locals of an active killer in the area. The male driver watches Eva as she approaches two sex workers, Flora (Simone Nethling) and Megan (Anathi Godlo). When Eva asks the girls if they have been fingerprinted, her niece assures her that it will not protect them. Eva expresses her desire for them to be safe and gives them some food from her bag. She urges them to stick together. In a vehicle nearby, Micki Pistorius (Charlotte Hope) says 16 dead sex workers, some of whom have not been identified. Rijus Visser (Adam Neil) tells her that the fingerprinting will give them a trail to follow. She argues that fingerprinting is not protection. Eva approaches them when they emerge from the vehicle. She and Micki share the same opinion of fingerprinting.

AJ Oliver (Vaughn Lucas) shows Micki where the Cape Town Prostitute Killer’s latest victim was located in what appears to be a pasture. Visser tells her that the victim was facedown and her legs spread far apart. No signs of a struggle make AJ believe the murder took place elsewhere. Micki points out how the killer buried Crystal’s head in hopes the ants would start with her neck to conceal the strangulation marks. She says the killer targets sex workers and utilizes the same type of ligature to strangle them.

Peninsula Murder & Robbery – Micki suggests the killer is white because the targeted area is predominately white. She believes he is single and unemployed. Erika Bothes (Donna Cormack-Thomson) questions if he has a roommate. Micki points out that he works on rainy nights and there is no sign of sexual assault, so he could be impotent. Erika says the victims are positioned to give the impression of them being raped. Micki believes the killer had a complicated relationship with his mother who he hates.

Eva does a trick for some cash. She later feeds Gabe (Leighmen Marshall) and urges him to focus on his math. He asks where is his father, Gus. She says at work. At a local pub, AJ tries to reassure Micki that she will identify the killer. She tells him about Mark (Steven John Ward). He convinces her to have more contact with Mark. She promises to give him a call.

A police entourage arrives in an alley where a deceased woman was found. A man informs her that the same ligature was possibly utilized to strangle the victim who was also stabbed in the neck. Spotting a rain puddle, she believes the woman was killed during bad weather. After a brief assessment, she says the killer dumped her there. The coroner tells her that a bottle was inside the victim’s vagina. Truck tracks are found nearby.

Micki asks Eva and Flora if any of their clients have problems getting an erection. She says a client who resides in Parrow utilizes an elastic band to get an erection but he isn’t the killer type. Flora adds that the man drives a blue truck. Eva claims he was treated for “madness” at Tygerberg and he asked to stick a bottle into her vagina.

Tygerberg – Dr. Kallis (Marc Pleass) tells AJ and Micki that 50-year-old white amnesia patient, William Truter (Carel Nel) resides in Parrow. Back at the police station, Erika informs them of a blue truck being sighted near the area where Ane Pelser was found. Visser hesitates to take action because the evidence is circumstantial. Micki warns that the killer will strike again. He reluctantly agrees on the premise of her extracting a confession from Truter.

After spending the night studying the case file, Micki questions Truter. He claims to have been a mechanic until work became scarce and now his ex-wife, Grace (Jessica Stanley) buys him food. When she declines to talk about her personal life, he suggests her husband could not deal with her talking to other men. He tells her that he loves women and denies paying for sex. Outside the interrogation room, Visser informs Micki that Truter’s tires do not match the tracks found at the crime scene. She assures him that Truter is the killer.

Grace tells Erika and Visser that Truter struggled to get an erection. She claims he lied about where he would go. Visser asks if she would agree to an official statement. She reluctantly agrees. He receives a call from AJ saying the victim’s earring was found in Truter’s truck. Grace says Truter utilized amnesia when he didn’t want to answer her questions. The Commissioner refuses to arrest him until there is evidence to connect him to the murder.

Truter admits to loving his mother and slept in her bed until he was 16. He tells her that he started buying sex when he was 20 but stopped after contracting an STD. He went back to prostitutes after his marriage failed. Jerking her chair forward until they are face-to-face, he asks if she wants him to tell her about the girls. She asks if he killed them. He denies any knowledge of what she is referring to. Outside the interrogation room, Micki tells Visser that Truter is possibly in love with his mother and kills sex workers who remind him of “bad mothers.” He informs her that they have to release Truter. She asks if he is giving up as he walks away.

After a few drinks, Mark and Micki go to her place. During sex, she briefly imagines Mark is Truter. The next morning, she receives a call about another victim being located near Macassar. A short time later, she arrives at the crime scene to find a partially nude white female face down on the ground. Visser tells her that someone called the station to confess and warned of more killings. He says the audio is being analyzed.

A man watches a sex worker from his vehicle. Two police catch Truter putting up police corruption flyers. He denies any knowledge of the flyers. Micki asks about his bouts of amnesia. He tells her that he was born in Porterville and hated his father who never beat him. He says after his father died, she spent time with her boyfriend and ignored him. She shows him a victim’s earring found in his truck and claims sex workers say he struggles to get an erection. He says it is possible he killed the girls but they need proof. When she starts to leave, he tells her to sit down because he wants to confess but changes his mind.

Micki receives a call from Visser telling her that Truter has been released. Later, she breaks down and apologizes to Eva for not getting Truter’s confession. Eva tells her that she is now part of their family. The episode ends.

 

William Truter is a suspect in the murders of the prostitutes in Cape Town. Truter spent a year in jail but was released due to insufficient evidence. Officials believe he continued to kill after his release. The Cape Town Prostitute Killer has never been identified. The killer was active between 1992 and 1996.

Catch Me A Killer Review

The show didn’t do a very good job with the Cape Town Prostitute Killer case. More of the episode should have been dedicated to explaining Truter’s fate and why the case is still unsolved. Pistorius’ interrogations feel a bit embellished. It’s questionable if her criminal profiling was even helpful in this case, otherwise, there would have been a conviction.
