As the episode begins, we see heavy machinery move a vehicle at the junkyard. The man gets out and discovers Adele before John (Billy Campbell) speaks with a woman about her. She tells John how they felt with Katie’s death when she passed away. Lise (Karine Vanasse) arrives and tells Cardinal that they’ve found Adele. They head to the junkyard and find Adele dead. She is wearing the same clothes as Robert so they know the same killer is involved. They also suspect another video will be coming their way soon enough. They leave and visit Barry Leblanc (Duncan Ollerenshaw) to tell him about the discovery. Barry says he needs to see Father Beckett so Lise Delorme offers to drive him there. Then, Cardinal asks Barry for the password to his email.

He asks why and they explain that Sheila Gagne (Carmen Moore) received an email from the killer it is not something he would want to see. Barry is concerned that they’ll never be able to find them before giving his password to John. While Lise takes Barry to see Beckett (Arnold Pinnock), John stays behind and watches the video of Adele. Lise speaks with Beckett and learns that Adele was a fixture at the church. Lise has to leave so Beckett promises to make sure Barry gets home. Seconds later, Barry places a call to someone. Neil Cuthbert (Currie Graham) returns to his place and finds a man waiting for him. The man says he shouldn’t have come and Neil explains he is doing exactly what he told him to do. He tells Scott (Shawn Doyle) that he is set up for the next one.

Scott says Neil is just as good as Wade said he was. Neil is worried that Scott being there is going to put them both at risk before asking what Scott wants. Scott says it isn’t enough and he wants them to know why he is doing it to them. Neil doesn’t want to do that but Scott reminds him that he is working for him. Scott goes on about his father’s hunting lodge which has been replaced by a concrete plant but Neil doesn’t understand where he is going. Scott says he is telling him why he is there and that it has something to do with those people and what they did to this place and him and her. He wants to be closer and feels the need to be a part of it. Neil says Scott should go home if he wants him to finish this before Scott heads for the door.

Next, Sheila arrives at the church so she can speak with Barry. They discuss their losses before the conversation turns to the murders. Barry believes Sheila knows why this happening but she doesn’t think it has anything to do with that since so much time has passed. She wonders why they would be punished if the others did something and Barry suggests it is because they did nothing. He says they let it happen and he thinks about it every day. Sheila encourages him to stay away from the others and Barry says they deserve this. Back at the station, Lise and John speak with Dyson, Ash (Zach Smadu), and McLeod (James Downing) about the murders.

McLeod says he took the feathers to an ornithologist and learned that they belonged to a Peregrine Falcon which used to be endangered but it isn’t anymore. John says the bird is a hunter and that might the way the killer sees himself. He also believes Wade is their best chance for a lead since he doesn’t fit with the others. Ash reveals he found eight men who went to prison with Wade and were sent away by Robert. That night, Neil prepares to take care of his next victim while Lise irons her clothing at home. She gets a visit from John who asks if she wants to go over the evidence and she invites him inside. They wonder if the killer is from outside of the area since it is professional.

Their study session is interrupted when Josh (Alden Adair) arrives outside. He has brought books and other items back to Lise. He asks her when she is going to leave and whether she is excited. Cardinal listens as John admits he had a part in their relationship falling apart. When Jose leaves, a man watches him from a vehicle. Lise returns to John and he suggests they call it a night. Later, Barry returns home and Scott watches him from a distance. Taj Roy (Cas Anvar) pays Barry a visit a bit later. Taj says he came by to make sure his buddy was okay and he bought drinks but Barry hasn’t drunk for more than five years. He slips and agrees to get some glasses.

Taj asks him about all of the money and questions whether it is all gone. They drink before Barry says he didn’t tell the cops about anything including him, Ken, or anything that happened. Taj asks if Barry told the cops he is in love with Sheila before he says he is going to take care of this guy. He encourages Barry to keep his head down because he doesn’t want to lose everything he worked hard for. He also blames Ken for getting them mixed up in the mess. Taj leaves and Barry cries before John has a nightmare. He finds two people with bags over the heads at a table. He approaches another person without a bag before someone throws a bag over his head too.

Neil heads out into the snow and drills a hole into the ground. He places a spike in the hole and ties a metal wire around it. Kely Cardinal (Alanna Bale) calls her father and tells him that he looks rough. They discuss John, his sleeping patterns, and his new place. He says he needs to get past the case he is working on before Kelly can come and visit him. Seconds later, Constable Derek Fox (Eric Hicks) is tasked with checking on Barry. He heads out back and finds Barry dead. John and Lise arrive. John says it doesn’t seem like the other exposure victims. Lise wonders if he did it accidentally or on purpose. She says there are two sets of large boot prints and one is almost dry so it has been there a little while. Abby Harris (Kathryn Alexandre) confirms he got them.

John realizes someone came in through the back since they didn’t want to be spotted. He wonders if the visitor had something to do with Barry’s death. Scott watches outside as Barry’s body is removed from the scene before he steps away. John meets with Father Beckett and tells him about the death of Barry. John wonders if Barry was capable of taking his life before Beckett says he has given up trying to guess what people are capable of. He admits Barry had struggles, addictions, and depression. He had a guilt and spoke about committing suicide in the past. He isn’t sure what the guilt was about. Then, Beckett tells John about the people who spoke with Barry at the church.

He mentions the choir director Glennis Hiltz, Max Westfelt, and Sheila. Back at the station, the detectives try to find out how Sheila and Barry are connected. They learn that they both worked for a company named Watershed Forestry from 1998 to 1999. Neither mentioned it and Lise finds that weird. Meanwhile, Sheila gives a speech before the detectives arrive. After her speech ends, she is questioned about her work relationship with Barry. She claims she forgot about it because Barry was always quiet and didn’t make much of an impression. Then, she is asked about the church visit. She says it was part of her job. At Watershed, she worked in payroll and Barry worked in the field.

She is surprised to learn that Barry was found frozen to death in his backyard. She denies visiting Barry’s house after they met at the church. Sheila is warned that she and Barry might’ve been the real targets. She is asked about the feathers from a Peregrine Falcon and if that means anything to her. Sheila explains it was a sacred bird but she claims she doesn’t know anything about it. She says she isn’t holding anything back before returning to the donors. John tells Lise that they need a warrant. After that, Sheila calls Taj and asks him if he heard about Barry. He acts like he knows nothing about it and blames it on Barry being a drunk. Sheila asks about Ken and Taj says Ken can take care of himself. Sheila is told that she should pretend to be ignorant.

He encourages her not to make any more calls from her personal phone before he hangs up. The list of inmates comes up empty before Lise and John sit down with Dyson and Jerry (Glen Gould). Jerry says he has been trying to back them up but he isn’t happy that they went after Sheila in public. He thinks they went too far and that Sheila didn’t lie about Barry. Dyson tells Jerry they could use his help on his and he admits Sheila has been acting strange. However, he thinks it is caused by grief. When Jerry leaves, they tell Dyson they’re working to get a warrant on Sheila.

Moments later, Ken (Tom Rooney) gets off of a helicopter and calls Josh. He tells Josh to pick up the phone before telling him to get Julie and Alex ready to move. Meanwhile, Neil keeps an eye on his next victim. He sneaks into Josh’s house while Josh cooks and his wife takes a shower. Neil sneaks up behind John before hitting him with the stun gun and knocking him out. He takes him outside and places him in the back of a vehicle before Ken arrives and the garage door opens. Ken walks inside before being attacked by Neil. Neil is left on the ground, the garage door is closed, and the episode ends.

 

Cardinal Review

I believe this season of Cardinal has been a bit better than the previous one. It was good in its own right but I think the villains are a bit better here. Neil is an interesting character and Currie Graham does great with the role. The villains last season had some bad acting that was tough to ignore at times. So, we learned a lot during this episode. Neil was hired by Scott to take care of Sheila and the others. I am thinking it has something to do with the land Scott’s dad owned being taken away and used for a concrete plant.

Ken is Josh’s dad and he is somehow involved in everything as well. This was one of the best episodes yet. It scores an 8 out of 10. Previous recaps of Cardinal are available on Reel Mockery!
